I had to do the mail route Friday and today.Yesterday i was okay until just before i got home from work, then it was "D" for the rest of the night and just not feeling good at all.Didn't sleep well, sweating one minute, cold the next, sore muscles.I guess it doesnt help that i eat nothing all day at work until i get home.Today i felt horrible but still went to work, after taking alot of Pepto Bismal,i was sweating just standing there sorting mail today and my body is sore. Not sure if im coming down with something or not? Every Saturday one of the regular mail carriers always brings in a treat, today it was oatmeal cookies,,,oh they looked so good, but my stomach is so unpredictable i didnt even attempt one.Thats another source of anxiety for me, i dont wanna be rude, but so far i have not eaten anything that anyone brings in to work, sooner or later they are gonna start to ask why i dont eat anything. It was so hot in that darn car today,i was sweating like crazy. To make matters worse my car starts to overheat! The temp light came on at my last stop on the route! Luckily i made it home for 2 reasons,,,,the first being the car overheating and the second was me running for the bathroom!!! Im still achey and tired, just couldnt believe how much i was sweating today and it was only around 82 with a nice breeze. I guess i gotta read up on Heathers IBS diet, this going all day with no food is not good for me!

It sounds to me like you might actually be sick! In either case, I'm sorry. That sounds like no fun!

I get very nauseated if I don't eat. I'm finding that I have best results if I eat something small every two hours. Get a box of FF saltines and stash 'em at work, or make a sandwich and cut it into halves or even quarters to spread over a length of time. You need to keep food in that tummy!

Aw, countrygirl, that sure is a yucky day!! Maybe you are coming down with something. That happened to me last December and I couldn't figure out what could have possibly triggered it until my never-sick husband came down with it too!!

Now, you've just GOT to eat during the day. You will NEVER get stable if you don't. Like Christine said, even a few crackers or a half a sandwich is better than nothing at all.

Have you started a fiber supplement yet? Give it a try and before you know it you'll be able to eat one of those cookies and be part of the group!! (Notice I said ONE, not the whole plate!!)

Don't worry about not eating the stuff your co-workers bring in. Just tell them you have lots of food allergies. That's what I say and people generally leave me alone. Sorry you're feeling so poorly!!

Good excuse about food allergies. I'll have to remember that.

Hi,

Sorry you had such a yucky day...and I can imagine the heat doesn't help. You sound like you really work hard and are on your feet a lot. It must be tough... and then to have stomach problems, too. It's not fair. Anyway, I think you would do better if you ate something. Even if it was crackers with peanut butter or whatever kind of safe food you can eat on the run. If I don't eat for several hours I get nauseated and shaky and just feel awful. I always carry some tootsie rolls in my purse for those times. And, yes I carry Immodium & Phazyme, too.

Feel better soon,
Barbie

CG, an empty stomach is a trigger. You should always keep a soluble fiber in your tummy at all times. Every couple of hours just a little rice cake or a few saltines, it doesn't have to be a lot of food -- in fact, it SHOULDN'T be a lot of food.

If I don't eat within at least a 10-hour period I'll get an attack too. I eat at night no later than 8:00 p.m., because I don't want to go to bed on a full tummy. But then if I sleep thru all night and don't get up until 8:00 a.m., YOWZA! I'm just asking for troubles. I have to force down a piece of toast, even if I'm not hungry (and I'm NEVER hungry in the mornings!).

Why not make up a big batch of Shanna's "Darn Good Blueberry Muffins" that she just posted about an hour ago in the Recipe Board (I am SOOOO gonna make these tomorrow!) and freeze them? Then, in the morning, grab one and pop it in the microwave as you're getting dressed; you could chomp it down while you're putting on your makeup and having your morning tea.

Stock up on Luna Bars and keep them in your purse or in your desk drawer at work. There's ALWAYS time for a Luna Bar!

"Going all day without food" is no good for ANYONE!

Hope you feel better soon.

Bev

I guess im going to have to do some reading, because im not sure what Soluable(sp?)fiber is? What is a good thing to eat thats safe when you are on the road? My mail route is approx. 37 miles from leaving the post office to returning. So running to the bathroom is kind of hard in the middle of the country.I sure wonder how the instructer for Rural Mail Carrier school does it? She has a 79 mile mail route 6 days a week and she also suffers from Colitis.I noticed during training she drank these yogurt smoothies(nouriche?) during the day. Im gonna make sure i do some reading on the other boards to get some ideas of what is good to eat and what isnt.IBS sure does suck, but besides that i have diverticulosis. Well technically i still carry the disease but had my colon resectioned about 5 yrs ago. The doc gave me the okay to eat whatever i liked again, but i notice if i eat popcorn or nuts,it still affects me!So i avoid all that yet.

You SOOOOOO need to do some reading. I know you said you have Heather's book, "The First Year," right? It's our bible, and we all follow it to the letter.

(Well, okay, a few of us cheat a little. Okay, wait. A few of us cheat a lot. Okay, damnit, we ALL cheat!)

But we know what we're supposed to do. And soluble fiber is our savior.

Actually, as I recall, I also had a hard time at first distinguishing between soluble and insoluble fibers. AND -- get this -- I mentioned it to my doctor, and he looked at me with a big question mark over his head, and I could tell his mind was saying to me, "What's the difference?"

I used to keep a chart on the fridge -- you'll find lists in "The First Year" of solubles and insolubles. After awhile, you'll know them all by heart.

If in doubt, go for a slice of French bread. You're always safe with that, and it's always available, in every restaurant, and in any supermarket. French -- sourdough -- is my fave, and it's my stable. (Although I can tolerate whole wheat, unlike most, so I use it more than anything else because it's so healthy. However, be careful, because whole wheat is a trigger!)

I also have diverticulosis. I've had two diverticulitis attacks so far, and my GI is ready to remove a section of my colon. Because I refused (I mean, come on, I've had only TWO attacks!), he showed me the door and, in essence, told me to let him know when I was ready for him to cut me up. I guess you can tell I don't think much of GIs.

Yeah, I don't eat seeds. Even tomatoes -- I only eat the outside portion and toss the insides. I went through my spice pantry and gave away all seeds (cumin, dill, poppy, etc.). Poor hubby, having to eat my lemon poppy seed muffins without the poppy seeds. He's a keeper!

About that "Nouriche" stuff -- watch out. Doesn't it contain dairy? Dairy is X-rated, Girlfriend. You need to read all the labels on everything in the supermarket, and if anything contains dairy, pass on it. It's our number one trigger!

You don't need to read other boards. You just need "The First Year" -- and us. We'll help ya, Girlfriend!

Actually i dont have the book.Looks like i need to think about getting it soon.As for the surgery,i didnt have a choice,it was an emergency surgery.Long story but i was feeling horrible that whole summer and dr's just blew me off, until i went in with abdominal pain and was very sick. They found an abcess from a ruptured diverticuli pouch that had formed a fistula(path or trail)to my right fallopian tube and ovary.I lost 2 feet of large intestine,my right tube and ovary.I thank god i didnt end up with a colostomy bag or dead! Wasnt until after surgery they told me how serious the situation was and how lucky i was.I have had surgeries before,c-sections and gall bladder, but the colon surgery was the WORST! It was horrible,i wouldnt wish it on anyone. How do you know when you are having a diverticulosis attack and not an IBS attack? To me the pains seem so simular,of course since the surgery im not nearly in as much pain as i used to be.I can sympathize with you Bev,diverticulitus is some BAD pain!!!!
