Hey,
I just got an invitation to a baby shower for a friend that I work with. I'm hoping to get some advice because I haven't been to a baby shower since I was about 10 years old and I would go with my mom.
Basically, I'm clueless when it comes to what kinds of gifts you should get, and what is considered an acceptable amount of money to spend on a gift. I know the sex of the baby which helps, but other than that, I've got no idea. I'm a fair bit younger than these girls, and none of my friends have had babies, and I'm totally clueless
Any advice? Kelly

Kelly, when is the shower? Do you have time to work on this, or do you need to get it immediately?
My favorite gift is a picture frame. If you can afford a SMALL sterling silver frame, you can have it engraved with the baby's name (if known). If that's too much money, how about a porcelain frame with "Baby" on it? I've seen them in mail order catalogues, and they're really cute. Proud parents always need frames to show off their gorgeous baby, so they can never get enough!
Now, having said that, how handy are you with a pair of knitting needles? Crochet hook? Sewing machine? A baby blanket is always appreciated, especially if it's HAND MADE. A patchwork quilt is a treasure, and easy to make too! I mean, come on, who can't cut up some squares of fabric, sew a straight seam, and tie all the corners with a little yarn?
When my nephew was born, I got some patterns for Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, and sewed them up for his shower. Wow, what a reaction they got! Cost me virtually nothing, because I used all leftover fabric, but you'd have thought I'd whipped up pure gold.
Anything hand made is treasured the most.

Hey Kelly!
When my mom was having a baby shower for my sister, she got a lot of clothes and small baby toys. A majority of the people would give things like a sleeper set (one of those unitard things, you know? I don't know exactly what they're called...) with toys like a teething ring, baby rattle, etc. in the box with it. I think what my mom most liked were the nightlights that her coworker bought her. They're the kind that you hang on your wall and you push the face of it in to turn it on, and the light is very soft. They're still up above my sister's bed because she can't sleep without them, and she's 4 years old now! We also got a lot of stuffed animals!
Bev had some great ideas as well! I hope we helped you a bit! Have fun!!

A couple of thoughts, can you go in on a gift with a co-worker or two? You can get a decent gift without spending a lot. Money you spend actually depends, I think, on how much you know this mom and how much you want to spend. You don't want to go broke.
You can never go wrong with onsies, variety of sizes and I wouldn't get the newborn ones because they grow out of them so fast, hooded towels and wash clothes are my favorite. Bibs spoons, bowls, and bottles are great (playtex nursers were my favorite but I have also heard some people like what are the Dr. Brown's)or even sippy cups. Toys are nice but don't get any stuffed toys because everyone seems to get those, unless you can't resist. Is she registered? I would go with a theme if you can, such as bathing, diapering or feeding and that helps if your friend is registered.
BTW, Toys r Us is having a baby sale right now until Aug 1st. You should be able to get the ad when you walk in the doors. I went and bought a swing for a friend today. We have a total of five girls piching in $15 and I was able to get that some bibs and a toy for the car seat. The swing also needed batteries so I picked that up. The sale was so great at Toy R Us I think everyone only owes me $13. I bought her the Fisher Price Link a Doos take along swing and it was a little less than $50 with 10% off! I might buy something else or give her the outfit I picked up for her earlier this week and get her something later when she has her baby. We spent $15 each on the other two friends that had babies in May.

From my own experience as a (wedding shower) recipient, I can tell you most people spent in the $20-25 range, unless they were family or very close friends. From what I've seen a baby showers, that same standard is usually true (at least around here).
I saw this at a baby shower recently and thought it was so cute: Get a piece of rope or twine and some clothespins. Buy an outfit or two and then attach the different pieces (each sock, the hat, the shirt, etc.) to the rope with a clothespin. Without spending a lot of money, you can put something together that will make everyone ooh and ah.

Well, my daughter is pregnant with her 2nd child, and she's told me that she wants me to have a diaper shower for her. She has a lot of things from her 1st baby, but you NEVER have too many diapers. And, like Bevrs, said; a blanket is ALWAYS needed and wanted. Terri
