I took a big step today---one that I have been thinking about for more than a year. I called the University of North Carolina Center for Functional Gastrointestinal and Motility Disorders and inquired about an appointment. When I explained that I have bipolar disorder and IBS-C, the woman said I had come to the right place since the center's director specializes in gastroentology and psychiatry. I had to bite my lip to not cry (tears of joy!) when I heard this.
Finally, someone who might could look at the whole picture!

I have been discouraged this past year because I have been bounced back and forth between my gastroenterologist and my psychiatrist here. Neither one of them know how to treat me. For experts to consider both areas is exciting!

The center is a 2-hour drive from us, so this will be a big time and expense commitment. But my husband encouraged me to pursue this, and said he would go with me.

This is one of the few research centers that studies IBS. I am so interested to see what they suggest for me. We've all heard about the brain-gut connection. If anyone can explain (and treat this), they should be able to!

My medical records are on the way to them. Hopefully, I will have an appointment soon. I can't wait!

SUPER news! Just GREAT.

Gee, I'm excited for ya, Girlfriend. Specializes in gastro AND psychiatry?! Wow! Can I get an appointment?

Amazing how sometimes things take a turn for the best -- with just one little bit of initiative on our part. We think to ourselves, "Selves, what do we have to lose?" and we pick up that phone -- and change our lives completely.

BTW, your hubby ROCKS.

Hi,

I think that's wonderful. A psychiatrist & gastro all rolled up into one. How lucky can you be??? I think they need more of those to spread around.

Good luck with your appointment. Keep us posted.
