Hey, Pretty Lady!
What a sweetie you are to think of me.
My tummy is much better, thanks. However, I have some terrible news. It appears my bod doesn't like our infamous ADBs. I made a batch day before yesterday and have had indigestion ever since. Just one more thing I have to give up! ARGH!
Guess I'll have to stick with my Jack....
THANKS for asking, Sweetie!

Hey Sis,
Glad to hear you are feeling better.
Too bad about the brownies. I made a Duncan Hines Dark Chocolate Cake the other day because I read somewhere on the boards that is was safe. Didn't even need icing it was so moist. Is your mouth watering yet??? It hasn't bothered me except for some slight cramping this afternoon but don't know if it is related to the cake or not. Anyway, it was worth it.....boy, was it good! I had to hold myself back to only eat one piece.
I have been craving a snickers bar. Wonder what that would do to me?? Don't think I want to find out. Guess I'll stick to the cake.
Are you taking Jack to bed tonight?

Yowza. Chocolate cake? OMG! I wouldn't dare go near it, not after my ADB fiasco! Lucky you.
Snickers, eh? Girlfriend, you are SOOOO like me! But those Snickers have to be frozen, ya know. (No, I wouldn't touch them either, not on a bet!)
However, have you ever tried a Luna Bar? I believe they're IBS-safe -- they've been discussed at length in the Diet Board -- and they're fabulous. My favorite flavor is "Nutz Over Chocolate." I got them at Safeway! Totally satisfies my Snickers craving.
No Jack tonite. Tummy's still recovering from the ADBs. Think I'll just curl up with a good book. I'm reading, "From The Ashes of Sobibor" and "A Crack in the Wall; Growing Up Under Hitler." Fascinating stuff.
Hey! No wonder I have bad dreams! ....
Sleep tight, Sis.

Well, truth be told, I haven't had ADBs for months now. (I was on a sugaaaa-free kick, which unfortunately didn't last long enough.) The only chocolate I get is from the rare RKTs and Luna Bars.
Actually, hubby also got indigestion from the ADBs. Hey, I wonder if maybe my oil had gotten rancid.......?
The book I'm reading is about what it was like being raised a "Good German" in Berlin during Hitler's reign, quite a change from all the books on the Holocaust I usually read. It's so hard for me to understand how these people could have lived such closed lives, completely unaware that their fellow countrymen were being mass murdered.
Oh yeah, I'll have more nightmares tonight....
Thanks for your post. Sleep tight!

Hey, Barb!
I have a feeling the problem might have been the oil in the brownies -- a very old bottle of olive oil that had been sitting in the pantry for months. Seems to me I read somewhere once that once a bottle of oil is opened it has a shelf life of only 2 weeks.
The brownies did have a slightly odd taste that I never noticed in previous batches. Do you think rancid oil could have that kind of affect on the gut? Even the small amount that was in 2 brownies?
BTW, Doc, thanks for the suggestion on Nystatin cream. I think it's working already! (Makes a mess on my bras & shirts, but it works!) Thanks, Barb. You're THE BEST.

I've never heard that about oil. I actually have a bottle in my pantry that I've had for at least 2 years. It doesn't smell rancid, so I keep using it. Hmm. I think I'd better make plans to replace that on the next shopping trip...

Bev, I don't know how you'll survive. I truly hope it was your olive oil. I know how much you adore your ADBs.
I hope you keep on feeling better! It's so unfair when things that never bothered us before give us problems. I'm with you on the Luna Bars, though... those are a godsend for me! When I know I won't be home for a while I bring them along for a quick snack or lunch and they never bother me. Well, except the Nutz over Chocolate one you like... but that's because my body hates peanuts. I looooove the chocolate mint one though!!

Hi Kree!
Gee, I haven't tried that flavor yet. I'll get some when we go to the grocery store today.
Kree, what do you know about the shelf life of oil (once opened)? I had heard it was only 2 weeks, but I've never tested it before. Frankly, I kinda forgot about the issue entirely -- until I made these brownies and got the indigestion from them. Then I recalled the odd taste, but figured it was just me. Just odd me.
Maybe it's not just me after all? Have you ever had oil go rancid on you? When you open your oil, where do you keep it? I buy the smallest bottle I can find, but I just don't use it often enough.
Yes, oil is going on my grocery list today too.
Fun stuff. I really HATE grocery shopping....
I hate to give up my ADBs, but I'll just have to get my chocolate fix from the Luna Bars and RKTs. It's okay. Who needs the calories, anyway?!
Thanks for your post.

I'm not sure about the shelf life of oils.. however, maybe you had a problem because you used olive oil instead of canola oil like the recipe calls for?!??
Anyways.. have you tried the peppermint fudge cake?!? I am OBSESSED.. it is phenomenal! so moist.. so chocolatey.. yuuuuuuuuuuum.. I'm thinking about trying it with almond extract next, but I dunno how that will taste.

Bev, check out this nifty table:
Table of Condiments that Periodically Go Bad
Cute, huh? I have one hanging in my kitchen. According to that olive oil has a shelf life of 6 months. Phew, I think mine's been there a lot longer than that! Scary. It sounds like that could be the culprit. I suppose I should replace mine soon too!
As for the ADBs, oh yeah, the chocolate mint kicks butt. It's actually called Peppermint Stick or something like that. You should give it a try!!

You know, Ashley, you're the second person who's raved about that cake. It's in Heather's book? I'll have to check it out.
You know, you might have something there. Olive oil instead of canola? That could explain the odd taste. I used up all my canola oil, so all I had was some olive oil -- so that's what I used. But yeah, that would explain the taste thing.
Since the shelf life is 6 months, then my oil wasn't rancid. So that means I just can't tolerate something else in the ADBs. It can't really be the chocolate since RKTs don't bother me (I add cocoa to mine).
I don't know; I'm totally baffled. I'll just have to limit my diet to Jack.
So how YUUUU doin', Girlfriend? How long has it been now? Are you feelin' any better? Is it getting any easier? Have you played any tennis? Met anyone new? What's happenin' w/you? Talk to us!

I guess you can tell I'm not computer smart....still learning how to navigate around here. Anyway now I have it. I'm not really good at making things from scratch...but I'll try. Oh........
Sis, I'm not well at all. I had a BIG attack this morning: EXTREME nausea, cramps, and D (of course), then nothing would come out any more; I was empty (yet my stomach looks like I'm about to deliver any minute).
Do you think it's the Benefiber? REALLY? I've tried to analyze this, looking over my food diary, and these morning attacks seem to come BEFORE I eat anything, although this morning it hit after breakfast. The only thing I have first thing in the morning is my SoyFee with Benefiber in it.
I'm embarrassed, because I've been singing praises of the Benefiber, and now I'm sick from it? Oy. It wasn't until BeagleLover offered me her supply of it, stating that she couldn't tolerate the stuff, it gave her C and bloating. While I was typing my response, I was starting to cramp up really bad -- and then the nausea hit me.
I've spent all morning sleeping it off. Wasn't able to go to the grocery store as planned (I hate grocery shopping anyway). Hubby's fed up with my being so sick lately because he thinks I take too much stuff (flax seed oil for my high cholesterol, Benefiber or Acacia, Equalactin, calcium, Jarrow probiotic, medication for blood pressure, medication for fungus, medicated eye drops for allergies, medicated nose spray for allergies -- YOWZA!). He thinks my body is rejecting it all....
I'm glad you found the recipe. I've never made it, but several here have raved about it. Sorry I can't bake it for you; I would if I could, Sis.
Goin' back to bed....

Hey Sis,
I'm so sorry you have been sick. If I was there I would give you my best sisterly care....and you would feel much better. I have a sneaky suspicion that is the Benefiber. Your not taking the tablets are you? They have sorbitol. You had similar problems with the Acacia. If I were you I would stop the Benefiber for now. Also, have you started taking any of the other medications just recently? What about the flax oil....I'm not too sure about that?? We'll figure this thing out together. BTW have you started any new vitamins or are you using any sugar-free stuff (could have that evil sorbitol)?
Just go on to bed and take it easy and feel better soon.
Give me an update later.

Bev, I am sorry you are feeling so sick. Rest and get better soon honey !
Now that you mention it, I think it is the Benefiber that made me so sick 2wks ago. Only, I had C, I felt terrible, bloated, indegestion, I felt as if I were overstuffed! I quit taking it, took me several days to just feel better. I Started it again yesterday, just thinking I wasn't taking a large enough dose, (1/2)t., started over taking 1 t. At this moment I will be taking NO BENEFIBER. I am feeling that indegestion and overstuffed feeling already! Enough of that.
I don't know what to take now, I am confused again (believe me, it doesn't take much).
I guess I will go back to the Konsyl since I have a huge container of it. Maybe not, I don't know.
If the weather wasn't so bad here I would just go shopping!!
get better honey, gayla

You can't tolerate olive oil? Wow! You get D? Any cramps? Nausea? Indigestion?
Well, I just got back from the grocery store, where I bought a tiny miniature-size bottle of olive oil and a small bottle of canola.
I don't think the problem with me is the oil, except for the olive oil flavoring the chocolate ADBs, ew....
I just think my system is real sensitive right now; I seem to get sick from anything and everything. ARGH!
Okay, enough pity party. I'm feeling better, truly I am, and I'm off the Benefiber for a few days to see if that was the culprit.
Thanks!

Don't do it, Girlfriend! It'll cost ya!
Okay, so you and I are off Benefiber. What about Acacia? It didn't bother me until I maxed out the dosage (and then it bothered me BIG time!) -- but hubby really read me the riot act this morning when I got sick. He's tired of me taking all this stuff and always getting sick; he said, "Isn't this stuff supposed to make you healthy?!" (Sounds like a male, doesn't it? A male who doesn't have IBS!) SOOOOO..... if I take any of my Acacia, I'll have to "sneak it."
I think I'll just my bod a little rest for awhile. No SFS at all! Don't tell LauraSue; she'll whip me.
You get better too. We'll get better together, 'kay?

Much better now. I took a long nap and slept it off.
This was a bad bout. Maybe because I didn't take any anti-spasmodic to help me through it, I don't know, but I'm just sick of being sick and tired of popping pills, ya know?
Hubby's fed up with me. He says all this stuff I take is supposed to make me healthy, and all I've been is sick. I can understand his anger; I feel it too. But it's all trial-and-error with us IBS-ers, and he just doesn't understand that.
Okay, so it appears the Benefiber isn't working for me after all. If I go anywhere NEAR that bag of Acacia, hubby will beat me. (oooooh.....)
Okay, sorry about that.
Dr. Laura, honey, I'm sorry, but I'm goin' off all SFS for awhile. When I gave up the Acacia a few weeks back, I felt like my old self again. Then I got onto this damn Benefiber stuff and I haven't felt the same. I swear, my bod just doesn't want it!
I have a very sensitive system. Don agreed; he said I'm so damn sensitive to ANYTHING; my whole body is overly sensitive. I can't tolerate heat, everytime I touch anything I get a bruise, if I perspire under my boobs I get a fungus that won't go away, oh I could go on forever.
Anyway, thanks guys. I'm gonna be just fine now, I'm sure. No SFS = a happy tummy.
You guys are THE BEST.

Yeah, the Donnatal would have probably helped this morning, but I was just fed up with ALL meds and ALL supplements. I was half hoping to just go ahead and throw up and get rid of everything in my system and then never eating again!
See how I am?
So what flavor SoyFee did you get? I'm still waiting for my order for French Vanilla, Chai and House Blend. So far my fave is Original Roast, but I have a feeling I'm gonna really like the House Blend. If you got the Dark Roast, it's pretty strong; I had to put some soy milk in it.
You're right; IBS-D DOES "sux" -- but nothing could be worse than having C and not being able to get that out of you. At least that's what I tell myself when I'm sitting on the pot and it's running out of me. (oh, sorry....)

I am sorry the past few days haven't been the best and brightest for you. I'll bet that your house stress has a little to do with it, plus foods, SFS's and your body just being plain uncooperative! But I'm hoping and crossing my fingers that next week you'll be right back on track. Food can really be the enemy I know but just snack on the what to eat when....stuff because once you're feeling better, but not used to food, that could throw you into another attack. Also wanted to let you know I think you are so sweet for saying that you feel for us C'ers even when you are having awful attacks and in a lot of pain. You're the bestest Bevrs! Get well ya hear! *Caryn*

Kree, Acacia bothered you from the start? Really? Wow. And you found that Fiber Choice is okay? Interesting.
Yeah, you're right -- whatever works. My Acacia story is a simple one: I had reached the maximum dosage without realizing it. DUH. I didn't discover it until I was increasing it even MORE! I was having EXTREME gas, bloating, and urgent D at the most inopportune times -- I was a mess. Stupid, STUPID. All I had to do was look at the back of the bag! Can you believe it? I was so shocked, I cut it out completely -- and got totally better overnight. Now I'm gun-shy about going back to it at all. Hubby ain't helpin' neither! At this point, he just wants me off EVERYTHING.
I think I will take a break from it all, give my body a chance to just clean itself out. Maybe just a Jack every morning with my SoyFee, eh?
Thanks again, Bev

I KNEW that would get your attention!! Don't worry, I don't eat much and I can tolerate it fine. If it was giving me D, I PROMISE I would give it up!!
Poor Bevvy. Feel better. And give that poor hubby of yours a hug from me, he sounds so discouraged too. You used to say how he'd eat anything you did and wouldn't eat anything you couldn't. I have always thought that's SO SWEET. He just wants you better, hon, you know that. And he's not fed up with YOU, just this darn disease. So go tell him Dr. Laura said you had to give him a hug. Right now! Come on!!

What a nice post. Thanks!
I think I sometimes just need to be more aware of the fact that I can't eat and drink what others can. That includes SFS, other supplements and herbs. I'm just too damn sensitive.
I know of several gals who used to be on the Boards and suffered from IBS, who are now in remission and no longer on the Boards; I still communicate with them by e-mail, and, while I'm happy for them (and I do meant that), I just think I should be there too. And I'm not, obviously.
Thanks for your support, Caryn. It means a lot.

Thanks for your kind wishes. I feel like an idiot when this happens to me. I should know better by now -- shouldn't I?
Well, this too shall pass....

Hey Sis & LS,
I don't take fiber supplements and I do eat some dairy (with lactaid tablet first). So there. I have confessed. What a relief! My conscience is clear....

Hey..
well sorry about your ADB experience.. I personally thought they were gross anyways. But try the pepp fudge cake.. its so amazing.. I usually only add 1/2 a tsp of peppermint cause Its REALLY strong but its great. I just made another one tonight.. BAD IDEA.. since my breakup I swear I've gained ten pounds.. I really need to get my act together and loose weight! This is the time when I'm supposed to get my hair done.. loose weight and get looking fabulous.
Anyways, not too much new around here.. just working tons and making alot of money so far. I'm def still sad, but it gets easier every day. I never forget it, but I've got no choice other than to live with it. One good thing though.. we did get the apartment.. I wrote it in another post but i'm not sure if you saw it. I also just bought my first real piece of furniture ever that is not a handmedown from my mom and dad or from salvation army. So I now have my very own COUCH! and its so cute and pretty cheap (my mom works for crate and barrel so my appliances etc are kickass and at a discounted price). My apartment even has its own balcony so I'm excited.
Also, I live like a minute from lake anne.. I live in north reston.. and there are still shops there, but not very good ones.. reston town center has far better shopping.
So whats up with you?!? I've been having D tonight too.. BUT I think its because of the AMAZING PHENOMENAL YUMMY piece of filet mignon I had for dinner. ahhhh i'm bad bad bad.. but honestly meat really doesnt' usually bother me if I use caution and eat it sparingly. ohwell it was worth it.

I get D and indigestion - no nausea from olive oil. But I do always get D when I eat it! I don't know what did it tonight, but I am having an awful night. Maybe it's that time of the month - it's about that time.

I hear ya Bev. Sometimes I just want to stop everything and give up! And Nutz over Chocolate = YUMMY. But I also like the peppermint ones. Have you had the Orange Bliss?? If not - don't waste your money in my opinion! I had to choke it down.
I'm sorry you're having a rough time lately. I am too. Hopefully it'll pass soon. It's just so hard to figure out what's giving me D -is it the fiber? Too much? Too little? Something I ate? Stress? Did I eat too much? Too fast? I just wish I knew what did it everytime, it's so hard to pin point it.
Good luck!

Actually, I love nuts, but along with my IBS I developed an intolerance to peanuts. All other nuts are fine! I actually had one of those Nutz over Chocolate bars not thinking about the fact that it might contain peanuts. It was VERY tasty... but also made me sick. Sigh. Too bad you didn't like the mint... but I'll stick to that one!

Cara,
I'm sorry you're not well. Is there something in the air?
Did you read Cathie's post from yesterday in the Diet Board? The subject was, "Article found... looks interesting and hopeful." It's very interesting, all about serotonin playing a significant role in cells lining the GI tract. Check it out.
I'm beginning to come to the conclusion that perhaps it's NOT so much about our choice of food but how our gut handles that food, dependent on our serotonin levels. And, I don't know about you, but my serotonin levels are all thrown off in hot (and especially humid!) weather.
I just think no matter what I do, it's got to run its course. Hopefully this time it'll be a short course.
I hope it'll be a short course for you too, Cara. Try to sleep it off.
Bev

Sis and WIW,
Don't even THINK such a thing! OMG! There's NO WAY I'm gonna give up my beloved SoyFee! Hey, I had to give up real coffee, that was really tough. I'll be DAMNED if I'm giving up SoyFee. That's asking too much -- WAAAAY too much. That's just above and beyond the call. I don't deserve that much torture.
No way, NOHOW! Nuh-Uh.
Actually, I started having problems long after I started the SoyFee. I checked my food journal just to be sure. (I had the same thoughts you guys did.) Turns out I was just starting to increase my Benefiber a few days ago, in conjunction with my morning cramps. It all clicks.
BUT -- tomorrow morning is the test. I'll have my beloved cuppa but NO Benefiber. If I still have cramps, then ....
well, I'll just have to go out in the garden and eat worms.

Red meat? Boo hiss! I gave that stuff up in 1985 and never missed it. Now when I see it, even on TV or in the grocery store it just totally grosses me out.
CONGRATULATIONS on your new home! WOW! That's PHENOMENAL! Your parents totally ROCK! Let me say this about that, Ashley: when I went to college, it was in Richmond, just a small professional art institute (I don't think it's there anymore). I lasted all of 3 months when my parents called me and said they could not afford to continue sending me there and I would have to come back home. I accepted it and went home. I got a job and my parents made me pay rent.
I never really resented it, but I found it odd that my parents were able to send both of my brothers to college (okay, my older brother got a scholarship to Brown and Stanford, but they still had to pay something I'm sure) and even sent my younger brother to college for TEN LONG YEARS. While I stayed home and paid rent.
Then, to really slap me in the face, when I got engaged and set the date, they couldn't even afford to give me a wedding! I was their only daughter, the only one they had to "give away." I had to gave myself a wedding (with the help of my fiance and his parents) with no help from my parents whatsoever. Now isn't that a little odd?
Okay, sorry. I'm venting. But the point is this: your parents are doing a marvelous thing for you; this is just fabulous, and I couldn't be happier for you.
Think maybe your parents will adopt me?
Bev
P.S.: I LOVE Crate & Barrel!

Hi,
I know.. I need to give up beef, but I LOVE IT. I'm trying though, I eat it way less than once a month.. which is GOOD FOR ME.
Anyways, I am definitly lucky to have my parents. I do still have to pay them rent (haha I am almost 23, I can't live off them forever), but not nearly as much as I would be paying someone trying to make money off me to pay THEIR mortage. I'm really so lucky to have them they are amazing. They have helped me and my brother and sister out so much. My mom had a similar upbringing to you, so she has tried to give us whatever we need to make it easier for us to be successful. The one stipulation for them paying for our undergraduate education was that if we ever got below a B we had to pay for the class, and we had to hold down a part time job to learn work ethic and actually be able to pay for our own clothing, shoes, food etc.
Anyways, they are helping me out alot..
I am watching the miss virginia pagent right now and it is TRAGIC. oh lord.. anyways, hope your stomach feels better. mine still isnt' the greatest.. hopefully it clears up before the DOUBLE I have to work tomorrow. ugh.

You hit the nail on the head, WIW.
I'm on my third cuppa (sans fiber, of course), and I've never felt better.
Yaay SoyFee! Yaay me.

You are welcome Bev about Nystatin and glad it is starting to work. Interesting you are using cream - we use the powder on our residents. I wonder which one works better. The only thing I don't like about the powder is - it clumps together.
I learned new info. about oil like everybody else. I had not idea there was a shelf life on oil.

I did read that article - I actually saved it, it was interesting. It's no wonder IBS and depression go hand in hand.
I felt a little better today. Not great, but a little better. I slept with a heating pad.
Thanks for your replies. Feel better SOON! ~Cara
