I was just being nosy and reading your profile , and I see that you do word processing from home. Can I be even more nosy and ask how you got into that?
I'm trying desperately to think of things I can do for work from home, since I'm just not stable enough to even leave the house for errands, a lot of the time, much less to work. I do sell "full-time" on ebay (vintage clothes! so much fun!) but the summer is a slow time for that, and I've had literally no income since April. Just trying to brainstorm.

... I know some people who do typing and stuff from home, and they got work through an agency. I haven't a clue what it's called, but you should be able to look up Employment Agencies and find soem Work From Home jobs. They have all sorts, like ironing and everything too if you are feeling domestic! Hee hee. But yeah, try to find some local job agencies.. you'll probably have to go out to wherever their office is one day to register, and take a typing test, ect. but then they should just line up jobs for you. --Steph

Casey, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I'm afraid I can't be very encouraging.
I've been a word processor for law firms for a LONG time. When I was working for the last law firm, they really seemed to appreciate me and seemed disappointed when I quit to move up here to Washington State, so when I got re-located, I contacted them and told them I was available to work out of my home if they wished. Turns out they did. They sent me tapes (via UPS) to transcribe -- medical record summaries -- which I would do as fast as I could, giving them a real fast turn-around time; I'd drive it down to the local airport office of UPS, and ship it back overnight. This system worked real well for years, but lately they haven't sent me anything. (It's just as well, because I've been too busy with the new house.) I understand they've hired new people, so no doubt someone else is doing the work "in-house" for them now.
About a year ago I answered a classified ad for a legal word processor, even sent my resume in, but they insisted on me coming into the office and working there; they most definitely were not interested in having me work out of my home. It's just something companies aren't into, for some strange reason.... (However, I do understand that law firms are extremely hesitant to let any confidentially-sensitive work leave the premises, and lawyers are infamous for not wanting to let go of their briefs! Even when I was working "in-house," they wanted to stand over me as I was typing.)
By the way, Casey, the money I make from doing this is SOOOO little, not nearly enough to support me. Not even close. It never was, not even when they were sending me a lot of work.
Sorry I can't be more encouraging to you.
Bev

That's actually the kind of reply I was expecting, so it's no big deal at all. I had a high-school friend who did some word processing from home, and basically, she was working for the company she was working for anyway, just from home - telecommuting, somewhat. She DID manage to make a living doing it, but only because they were still paying her the same way they'd paid her when she was actually in the office. In other words, she was really lucky. LOL!
I'm sorry to hear they've stopped sending you work! That stinks.
Really, I'm pretty fortunate in that the cost of living is low enough here that we're "getting by" on just Adam's income, so I don't worry too much about "making a living". I don't like feeling like a burden, though, so I try to scramble up enough to pay my own credit card bill and car insurance, about $150/month. That's normally a piece of cake for me on ebay... except in the summer.
Ah well. Thanks for the information, anyway!

I've registered with agencies in the past, and they typically don't have work-at-home jobs (I've looked into such a thing, on and off, for several years), so I definitely won't get my hopes up. But thanks for the idea! I haven't checked any agencies since I moved up here, and I probably should anyway.

Hello!
I was reading your post and wanted to make a suggestion. I have a friend who works for a company in the United States that has all their employees work from home. They have data-entry positions, call center work and other stuff. I tried working for them briefly but it didn't work out for me, my computer wasn't quite up to par for the equipment that I needed to do what they required.
Anyways, my friend really likes it and makes a reasonable amount of money (she does still have a second job though). Might be worth looking at. The website is: http://www.workingsol.com/
Good luck! Kelly

Casey, my aunt does medical stenography or something like that from home and she makes a living that way. I don't think she has a degree for it or anything. I can ask her about it if it sounds interesting to you!
