Going apartment hunting today, looking for tips

Hey Guys,

Well, I'm going out apartment hunting today to look at some new properties as my boyfriend and I have finally decided to move out of the crap hole that we're currently in I'm looking for anyone's tips or suggestions for things to look for when looking at properties.

The apartment I'm in now is the first place I've ever had on my own, and we really rushed into renting it and didn't properly check it out and got kinda screwed in a lot of ways. There are huge water problems, mold in the bathroom, sliding glass doors that don't shut properly, etc etc because when we looked at it, all we really did was peak at how big the rooms were and the layout and say "ok!" (I know, not too smart).

So, any tips for a newbie at this kind of thing? I want this place to be somewhere where we can live happily for awhile, and so I want to minimize any "surprises" down the road.

Thanks!
Kelly

Well, you know to check those things out this time around, so I won't say obvious things like checking the water, leaks, doors that close properly, etc. Heh.

My big thing now is, unless you already know the neighborhood really well, REALLY check out the area - if you have the time, come back at night and see what it's really like when everyone's not out at work. If you drove by our apartment, you'd think it was a perfect little neighborhood... till you came back at 3am and heard the drunk upstairs neighbors throwing furniture at each other, or their friends burning rubber up and down the street in their souped-up cars. (This is our mistake that we'll never make again, heh.)

Also, if you do look at a place and it needs some minor work before you move in, get it in writing. We've lived here for 10 months, and still don't have a bedroom door. (And we waited 3 months for drawers for the kitchen... one of many things that were supposed to be done before we moved in.)

Good luck apartment-hunting!
