i went and got 2 tattoos today.

i have been planning on getting the one and toying with the other for months. i was driving down the road with nothing much to do and i thought "hey- i'm going to go get that tattoo. so i drove to the one place (where my brother got his) and they weren't open, so i drove down to Baltimore to another shop where Angela's brother has gotten some tattoos. well, i'm glad i did! they were really fantastic.

what did i get, you ask? well i'll tell you. i got an Om on the inside of my right wrist and (kinda hokey but) i got a small ladybug on my left shoulder, on the back.

what possessed me? well, i think some tattoos are beautiful, though i'm not a fan of the whole-body stuff and lots of tattoos are terrible in my opinion, but anyway i do have a love of art and i think tattoos are a very interesting form of art.

i have a tattoo already- i got it back in '92 or '93 (in my early 20s). it's Pepe le Pew and he's on my stomach, believe it or not. i LOVE Pepe le Pew. LOVE HIM.

anyway, back to today. so i was thinking "i'll get the Om." and then when i walked in i decided on a whim to get the one on my shoulder, too.

the Om has such lovely spiritual meaning, representing God and self and past/present/future in addition to other things. it's also got a 3 theme, and that's my favorite number and it has a lot of meaning and reverence for me. so i've known i wanted this tattoo for quite a while. i wanted it there on my wrist (though i have long been against the idea of visible tattoos on myself) to remind me of my spirituality and the need to tie past, present and future and the internal and external worlds. i figured it's a good reminder when i reach out for something...

so then i got the ladybug because ladybugs are lucky. and i thought- life is good and we make our own luck so i want a reminder of that. so i have a ladybug now. she has 6 dots and 3 legs. see the 3s (and multiples thereof)!?!?! so now i literally have lady luck behind me. hokey? so what. i love it!

will i get another? yes. they are totally addictive, which is ironically why i waited so long to get another. i was afraid i'd be unstoppable! well, i have a personal goal and when i reach it i will put something on my lower back. i had originally wanted something celtic, but today i saw a gorgeous tattoo of 2 orange and gold koi swimming in the Pisces fashion. it also reminds me of the yin-yang symbol AND has a lot of Buddhist "luck" connotations. so i think that's what i'll get.

after that...? probably that will be the end, though if i marry someone who is "into" that sort of thing i could see getting a small small little something somewhere to commemorate the marriage.

hmm... never knew i was "tattooed trailer trash" didja!? (that's what my mother calls all 3 of us kids 'cause we're all tattooed)

anyway, what it all boils down to is this: i have been through so much in the last few years (in addition to the IBS and the fibro which are much more recent, i was also raped about a year and a half ago) and have really really grown as a person. i have earned this, in my opinion. i also had a huge need to do this today to remind myself that pain is temporary and fleeting but always leaves a mark. that's important in a lot of ways but especially poignant for me right now coming out of this time of my life and now having this pain-oriented illness.

anyway, i guess i was just in a transformative, permanent commemoration type of mood. the time was right and i went for it!

WIW, when you get your mind set on something, WATCH OUT!

Tattoos, eh? Yowza! And I was blown when my best girlfriend lifted up her shirt and showed me her new belly button ring! I am SOOOO getting too old for this stuff .....

Well, honey, if that's what turns ya on, GOFERIT. What the hell, you only life once. Besides, I think men are turned on by tattoos and belly button rings -- although I couldn't say from experience. We need to ask our fly boy -- but he seems to be making himself scarce these days....

Hey, wait! Where's Joseph? Lets ask him....

No, wait.

I'm confused. Wait. Maybe I'm not.

You know, Jen, it doesn't matter whether men are turned on by it or not. What matters is whether YOU are. It's your body. If you want to tattoo it, it's your business.

So tell me, does it hurt? Is it like a burning sensation? Do you have to treat the skin afterwards with any kind of salve or ointment or something? (See how ignorant I am of this kind of thing?)

Say, I wonder how Cute Bartender likes tattoos. Maybe you already know? Heh heh heh.....

I'm just so jazzed about you and him under the tree. How cute.

Okay, I'm outa here --

Later,
BB

I have some friends with truly amazing work, but mine is nothing especially artsy. Probably the best one is the lily on my arm, which the artist freehanded... and did a really incredible job with.

The weirdest tattoo I have is the one I got as part of the Skin project. It's not artsy, but I suppose it's for the sake of art? Heh.

Hah, don't get me started about tattoos... I'll never shut up!

I think it's wonderful that you chose to mark growth and changes in your life with a personal-yet-outward symbol like this, by the way. I've been thinking that if/when I get myself stable, I'm going to treat myself to a little something, to mark the occasion, if you will.

Jennie my girl,

First congrats on the tats, they sound WAY cool. And second, oh my poor sweet baby, what an awful experience you had a year and a half ago. And what a lot of work to heal from. Good for you. Without going into detail, I know a little somethin' about it and know what's involved in getting through it. NO WONDER your body's breakin' down on ya hon. That's just gawdawful. Kudos to you for being your happy wisecrackin' self!! And

And if CB don't treat you right, tell him there's about 50 women gonna be gunnin' for him. And a couple a guys too probably, like Jamie fer sure.

Love and hugs,
LauraSue

Dear Sweetie Pie, if the Tats make you feel good, it makes me feel good. Though I don't think I could ever sit and do that, its cool for you!!

I hate to hear of your disturbing and painful experience. With your witty and often silly (dont' take offense, that is what I love about you) personality, I am impressed with the way you handle things. keep on honey, you've really got it going on !! love to ya!! gayla

let's see.... does it hurt? hell, yeah, but it's not horrible. i'm not going to be one of those people who acts tough and says "oh, it's not painful at all!
but i'm not going to exaggerate, either. i just balled up my fist and talked to the dude. no tears or anything- not even close. the one on my wrist hurt worse than the one on my shoulder. it feels like being stuck multiple times with a tiny needle loaded with paint... that's what it feels like. here's the trick, though- it only really hurts while they're doing it. i don't know that i have the fortitude to tolerate a huge tattoo, but the small ones i have aren't bad. i can't imagine how people do their whole back or arm or whatver. Percocet, maybe!? anyway, afterwards it just kinda reminds me of a skinned knee or a burn from the stove- it hurts if you brush up against it in the way that those things do, but it's not like it hurts all the time. i'll keep a triple antibiotic ointment or intense moisturizer on them 'til they heal, then thereafter i'll keep suncreen on them.

well, as usual with me, i don't care whether people like it or not. it's not a big deal to me! i figure people like me for me or they don't. nothing i can really do about it!

though i did have a little concern--- Angela and her sister (they're my best friends) and their brother (who i also adore) are all getting tattoos next weekend. i didn't know this at all when i got my urge to go yesterday. i found out when i got back. they said "oh my god, we are going next weekend and wanted to know if you wanted to go with us!" well, i think that's a little hokey- the group adventure to get a tattoo. well, mine was a little more of a personal landmark type of experience anyway so i'm glad i went alone. also, i think it would be dorky of me to show up places with my best friends, all of us sporting new tattoos. maybe that's just me! anyway, they're all siblings so i think it's cute that they get them together. i'm just glad i went first...

oh, and by the way, cute bartender has at least 2 tattoos. i don't know (or care) how he feels about them on girls, though, as i already mentioned. then again, just about everyone i know has at least one or some kind of piercing (which i don't have), so it's not unusual. well, i do have a few friends without them, but they're strange!

and you're totally right, Bevrs- when i set my mind on something, WATCH OUT! (poor, poor cute bartender)
