Hey guys!

Well, I made it through my first colonscopy! Thank goodness that's over Thanks to everyone who helped me out and gave me their support, it means the world to me!

Things went ok, I was never able to get the second prep down despite large quanties of ginger tea and gravol, but thankfully it looks like the Fleet cleaned me out enough so they went ahead with the procedure. I was so nervous that I broke out in hives on the exam table before they gave me the medicine...had them quite worried thinking I was allergic to something!

He had to take some biopsies, but of course he didn't come in to talk to me after, the nurse just told me and wouldn't say what he did or didn't see, just that he had to take biopsies. And, just as I suspected, he's not going to do the follow-up with me, he's just sending it to my family doctor. I'm so frustrated with that doctor! I was hoping for at least a follow-up appointment so I could push him to review my gall bladder ultra-sound results, but I guess no such luck. At least my doc promised to send me to another GI guy (the one who treated my mother) if this guy wouldn't see me again, so hopefully that'll be good.

I'm not doing too badly right now, I have alot of gas pain but other than that I'm ok. Does anyone have any suggestions for what to do about eating? I know you can start eating right away, but the gas pains are terrible, should I just start with some bread and give it some time. Did others eat right afterwards?

Thanks again guys, you're the best!
Kelly

Whoopee! It's over! Good for you.

Fennel tea and yoga. That's what will help the gas pains most I think. And time.

I started eating straight after (I was starving! ), but sticking to soluble fibre foods isn't a bad idea if you're feeling bad.

Again, good for you! You did it!

I TOLD YOU that you could do this! See?! Dang. I'm really not one to say, "I told you so," but if I were, this would be the time.

I thought about you all day today, Girlfriend. Oh yeah! I'm so glad you let us know how it went.

I didn't eat anything afterwards. I came home and went to bed. I was flying high! Say -- how'd you like them there drugs, eh?

Honey, if you've got gas, then go ahead and BLOW! And I say eat whatever you want -- you deserve it.

SMOOCHES!

Congrats with surviving the colonoscopy! I think taking biopsies is kind of standard procedure. They did it with me and there was nothing wrong at all so try not to worry.

Good for you Kelly!! Feeling a little better today? I have a few questions for you seeing that you are a pro now . I am going friday for a colonscopy.but first have to travel. My times were the same as yours but was changed to 8:30 am fri.instead of 2:15pm fri. I am starting the Fleet prep tomorrow morning around 7:00am,hoping that it takes effect right away,(fingers crossed) as I am travelling 3 hrs(maybe a little longer depending on how many stops I need to make!!)to a hotel;in the afternoon. Then doing the next Fleet prep around 7:30 pm -8:00 pm. Have to be a the hospital,7:30 am fri. Q's are what did you mix with your fleet drink,? I was thinking of using gingerale or 7-up(stirred of course).I will (hopefully)be drinking gatortade ice (its clear) and Kool-aid sport jammers (extra electrolytes) and tea and chicken broth. Also tomorrow maybe jello.( I remember when I used Colyte for a prep I didn't drink anything at all.) Did you bleed quite a bit from the removal of polyps?, how long did it take you to wake up? I think thats all I have to ask for now maybe something else will come to mind later. Did you finally eat something? I think I'll bring with me a plain bagel or some bread and peanut butter to eat on the way home. Take care Sue

Hello Sue,

Ok, I'll try my best to answer some questions for you, I'd hardly consider myself a "pro" (I'm not a pro at anything medical, huge suck!) but I'll see what I can do. First, have you read Jill Skylar's post on the prep that is on the Crohn's/Colitis board? It's great, I took a lot of her advice and it really helped. It's a sticky post so it should be at the top of the board. Here's a link: http://www.helpforibs.com/messageboards/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=IBD&Number=20349&page=0&view=expanded&sb=5&o=&fpart=1

Ok, so for what to mix it with, I used gingerale, and as weird as this may sound, I added extra sugar to the gingerale and it seemed to help the taste. My mom used to always tell me that sugar mixed into pop gets rid of the carbonation, so that's what I was trying to accomplish, but it actually helped the taste. I would recommend starting with just a little bit of whatever your mixing with, seeing if you can tolerate it, and then adding more to get it to where you can drink it. Don't start with a huge amount, because then if you still don't like the taste, you're stuck with even more to drink! You also may want to mix it with something you don't normally like to drink all the time, because for me, I don't think I ever want to see gingerale again! (although I'm sure I'll get over it).

If you're someone who gets nauseous easily, I would recommend some Gravol before hand to help make sure you keep the prep down. Strangely, I didn't have much trouble until almost 9 hours after I took the first Fleet, but then I got really nauseous. You'd want to check with your doctor first, and be sure to tell them when you get there how much Gravol you took, but I took 2 an hour before the first prep, and 2 an hour before the second one and had lots of ginger tea (helps with nausea).

You have to travel eh? Is that because there are no places that do it where you live? Is it at all possible for you to wait until you've arrived where you're going to do the prep? I just found that I was "going" for more than 12 hours straight, wouldn't have wanted to be travelling, although everyone is different in that regards.

Definately try and drink as much as you can (remember nothing red!) because you will get dehydrated. I had Gatorade and everything but I was still pretty dehyrdated by the time I got to the hospital.

As for how long it took me to wake up, not too long at all actually. I have a really high tolerance for sedating drugs and always wake up quickly from anesthesia. I was a little awake when they were wheeling me to recovery, and I would say fully awake about 30 minutes afterwards. I was groggy the rest of the day, but not too bad. I didn't get any sleep the day or night before, so I think that contributed to how much I slept afterwards.

I actually didnt' have any polyps removed, they just took biopsies, and I actually haven't noticed any bleeding. If it helps, I was told that as long as your not bleeding more than 1/2 cup (don't know how you could tell that), you're ok.

Hope this answered some of your questions, and good luck! I assume maybe you've had one before because in your post you mentioned the colyte prep, but if you haven't, don't worry about the procedure, it was a breeze! The prep truly is the worst part

If you have any other questions, feel free to post, I should be on and off all day! BTW, where are you going to have your procedure?

Take care,
Kelly

thanks Kelly for answering my questions. Yes it is to bad that I have to travel. The change in time was my choice. I had the 2:15 pm appt. but changed it to the cancellation of 8:30 am.Wanted to be home early Friday as It is my daughters Prom. I am driving to Sudbury for the procedure. Last colonoscopy was done here at home but the Dr.(GI Surgeon) I seen here says he can't do nothing else for me. So my Dr. sent me to Sudbury for consultation May 11 now the GI wants to see whats up!! I'm only a little nervous about the travelling. But we won't leave until I'm pretty sure most or all is out.The hotel is expecting us around 6:00 pm but I'm sure I can call if we are going to be late. I just need to start the second bottle around 800 pm. I'll take your advice and mix it with gingerale. You mentioned that you got nausea's later?Did you not drink anything else during the evening, other than gatorade? Tea, or chicken broth or jello. I know that last time I just couldn't because i was so full, but I am going to try. Thanks again for answering. If only the prep was as easy as the procedure we would all be happy!! Take care Sue

Hey Sue,

I did try and drink other drinks, I attempted some 7-Up but the carbonation didn't sit well, I had fennel and ginger tea, and water. It's weird, I had bought all these drinks sure that I would keep drinking and be really thirsty, but the prep made me not want to put anything in my mouth!

Good luck with everything, I hope it goes well for you!
Kelly
