Haha! I thought this was just my family! My Mum's nuts about ketchup and would have it with anything I think.

Well, mine are really, super weird:

*Making people laugh even if it's AT me!

*The feeling I get when I'm riding in my awesome car with my shades on and the window down so that the wind can whip my hair around!

*My sister's cheeks! They are so soft and pudgy (she's still a baby!)!!

*Playing on team sports. The feeling of knowing that eevryone is supporting you and cheering you on is amazing! Althgouh I don't play on any teams anymore because I'm a school nerd, I have gym class and when people call out to you and say, "Yeah Jess!! We know you can do it!!" It's a great thing!

*Privacy! I love being home alone and being free to do whatever I please.

**Blowing up balloons. It's a fantastic stress reliever!

*It makes me super happy when other people are happy because I think that everyone deserves as much happiness as they can get! (I know that sounds like a hippie statement)

Well that's all I can think of at the moment...

(Warning - I actually scared myself at how deep I got with this post! Excuse the random ramblings...)

I was actually thinking about this post last night when I was sitting outside a coffee shop with my boyfriend and a friend of ours. They were off on their usual chatter about cars, and while I know enough to follow along, I was too tired to concentrate that hard.

So I started looking around and noticed a guy closing up his flower shop (it was about 10pm-ish). We were downtown in nearby Pleasanton so there were only a few people walking about the streets. Every once in a while, a couple would be strolling past the flower guy. Some would stop to chat for a few minutes, while others offered only a smile and greeting. For each couple, once they started to leave, the flower guy would quickly grab a carnation and hand it to the guy so that he could give it to his signifigant other. Always free - never accepting money for it.

This got me thinking as to how much each person can effect someone's life. That couple could have been fighting or going through difficult times, and that one free thoughtfulness might have been a bright spot in whatever was going on in their lives. A thoughtful action like that is very rare where I live so it was funny to realize how much of an impression it made to witness that. Watching things like that definitely makes me happy and thankful.

It's taken me a couple days to reply to this one, but my exams are almost over (one more, on monday) so I can take a break and have a little fun on the message board. I am thankful for / made happy by:
law school -- and my parents' willingness to pay for it!
reading anything and everything all the time
living all by myself
Law and Order on tv all the time
the sound of the subway going under my building, real soft and rumbling
the sound of my boyfriend snoring, when I'm lucky enough to be sleeping by him (he lives in london)
finding the smallest place I can fit into and then just kind of curling up in there. Mom says she used to find me in closets when I was little.
Seeing both of my brothers happily married
Catching my parents making out
My grandmother's tears at the national anthem (she was a POW), her smile when we all remember my grandfather, her amazingly strong hands kneading dough or preparing lamb (she's 84 and strong as an ox).
Being a Godmother -- I know we are supposed to skip the things like babies and puppies, but two years ago when my then-pregnant cousin asked me to be the baby's Godmother, I was lonely, going through a breakup, feeling insignificant and useless. I was praying all the time that God would just give me someone I could be madly in love with, without having to worry about being loved back or somehow losing my individuality. Well really I was talking about a man but he gave me my little Katie girl and she has been all of those things to me. The boyfriend came later, after I was already happy. Funny how those things work.
Going to Church is just about my favorite thing to do. I go to the church where my mother grew up, and where my grandparents were founders. Everyone has moved away now so I only have some second cousins and stuff there, but somehow the subway ride to Brooklyn and the 5-block walk to church is the most peaceful hour of my week. Being in Church makes me feel like everything is right with the world. Getting kidnapped by church ladies and taken out to lunch is pretty wonderful too.
Daydreaming about spending the summer in London makes me happy.
Walking through Central Park 3 or 4 times a week with my best friend is pretty great.
Cooking makes me feel calm and peaceful and accomplished.
Taking a night off from homework and socializing just to lay on the couch and rot makes me happy too.
Finding a real find at an antique store or Salvation Army (where I got my fantastic amazing dresser) makes me pretty happy.
Making a pot of tea and forgetting to drink it makes me laugh, because my mom does it all the time and I always made fun of her for it.
Having my brothers and sisters-in-law really close to NYC makes me happy.
Having my IBS under control makes me happier than anything!

I'm sure there is much more, but is anyone really that interested?

This is complete the NYer in me. I am thankful for my LIRR ride into Manhattan.(of course sans any delays that may occur). There is just something about that skyline that no other city has. I am thankful that my city which has seen utter devastation (which I experienced firsthand) and destruction has survived and grown more vibrant than ever. The city in and of itself is a living and breathing organism. I have been lucky enough to grow up here and be a part of it all. And who can beat those crazy cab rides one takes while they are on the town. I love New York.

one last thing ...
really stiff, starchy sheets and towels. I like when they are all scratchy and cool in the bed.

Yay for NYC! What is it about this place? Even watching people throw their hands up in the air when tourists stop in the middle of a sidewalk or a cabbie makes a right on red is somehow reassuring. And I know what you mean about the skyline and that first approach to the city. It's still looking a little toothless to me but you are right, it is a reminder of how resilient we are! One gripe though -- how friggin long is the columbus circle construction going to take? I have to walk through there every day on the way to school (Fordham Law at Lincoln Center) and honestly I don't think they're ever going to finish!

Amanda,

All I have to say is that NY is under constant construction. It has taken the city 3 months to smash the street in front of my apt and repave it. And they're still not done!

Another thing to be thankful NYC Construction!

How many more years of Law School?

This has nothing to do with the subject but I just wanted to add that I think you are a complete doll! I read one of your replies yesterday because I was curious after seeing your screen name since I was also born in 1976.

Well I guess the constant construction can help me learn some patience ...
I'm just finishing up my first year (last exam is on monday! ). I graduate in 2006.
