i was walking barefoot in the back yard today and on my way walked through some moss. i have always loved moss. isn't that an odd thing!? but i do. that's my favorite spot in our yard for that very reason. it made me happy to just stand there, under a pine tree, with my feet in some soft green moss.

that got me thinking about things that are happy-making to me that other people just might not "get." i thought of some others.... i like the smell of skunks. (strange, no!?) and i love the feel of velvet. i'm really thankful for soft stuff like that! hmm.... what else did i come up with!? colors make me happy. that sounds dumb, but i mean.... colors really really make me happy. i love anything with tons of color. don't care what it is! a NY shop with flowers in rows in the front. love that! skeins of yarn at the yarn shop. rows of pens and pencils and paints at the art shop. even a parking lot full of cars when the sun is shining brightly. those are all really colorful things that make my heart happy. (yes, i'm a dork, but c'mon--- you're all just as dorky in your own ways!)

what do you love that is weird/obscure!?

(Tip: puppies and kittens and babies aren't weird or obscure. we all love those things! neither are rainbows or your husband/boyfriend. well- they may be weird, but not the kind of weird i'm talking about here!)

hmmm...ok I'm really happy for my professor's couch. NO! It's not what you think--get your mind out of the gutter. I had class at my prof's home last night and she has THE BEST COUCH EVER. I seriously never sat in anything so comfy and soothing and the fabric felt so wonderful on my skin (I had on a sundress). Apparently her dog agrees with me--my dress is covered in dog hair! He's makes me happy too, but I know he doesn't count. It's funny you asked this question, because I literally thought to myself for a full 5 minutes while tuning out the discussion, 'this couch is wonderful.'!

the smell of a new box of crayons. beads--like to go to a bead shop and look/touch all the beads. apple cider vinegar because it smells like Easter eggs. orange jelly beans (yes, only orange!). jars of pickles in the deli.

i'm sure there's other stuff, but my mind is dead right now.

I love windows! I like being able to look outside, even if it's raining or icky. I love walking in thunderstorms in the summer, when it's warm enough the rain feels good, not freezing (there was one Sunday night when I was walking home from my best friend's, it was glorious).

Also, I tend to perch on things. I'll sit up on tables, desks, counters, arms of wooden couches, in windows, whereever I can. That makes me happy as well. Not sure of anything else, need to get sleep so I can take a linear algebra exam in the morning...

I love dishes! Old dishes, with roses and gold accents. New dishes, brightly colored. My new red tea pot, I love the shiny enamel coating. New panties, yes, that is a little weird, huh? A freshly painted room, opening a new can of paint and trying to decide what kind of food it reminds me of. We had heavy thunderstorms here yesterday all day. I walked from room to room opening the windows that didnt have rain splashing in, watching the trees (we have a lot of pecan, and majestic oak tress) they are so amazing and awesome flowing and whipping with the wind and the rain. The thunder was awesome, had lots of it. My fav kind of day.

The beach in the evening, about 30 minutes before the sun goes down.love that.

Shopping for new plants for my flower beds, I love the pinks and the purple, so thats what I have and my beds are loaded with blooming plants, lots and lots of flowers. Keeping a little ceramic pitcher full of water out there to let my sweet little lizards get drinks. They love it too, they are constantly in it.

ok, moving on, i could just talk about this kind of stuff forever.

I like the smell of a Zippo lighter after it's been lit. I like different kinds of ceramics for the kitchen, like silly salt and pepper shakers, spoon rests, scrubby holders, that kind of stuff.

I also LOVE the smell of DubbleBubble Bubble Gum!

I love the smell of a good pool hall, even though I hate smoke and I hate pool...because it reminds me of my boyfriend who is incredibly obsessed with the game (sport in his mind!)

Hi,
I am gonna kinda copy Jen by saying that I like soft things.. I have 2 of those velux (sp??) blankets (you know, the ones they have in lots of hotels now..) at home (in Canada) and I could wrap myself up in one of those and be content for an entire day! I also have a large selection of flannel things, soft/fleecy pillows and blankets.
Weirder? Um.. I really enjoy organising money.. I like to let my money at work get unorganised so I can go through it and put it in order, with all the heads facing the same way.. I like to find somewhere really messy (a shelf, a drawer) and go through and organise it IF IT ISN'T IN MY OWN ROOM - I only enjoy doing it at work and stuff. At home, I am the messiest person alive.
I like the way sea weed feels between your toes under water.
I enjoy watching people try and fix something that won't be fixed (a VCR timer, a toaster..)
I like waking up half an hour before my alarm goes off (as long as it's not tummy waking me up) and being able to lie there for half an hour, half awake and half dreaming so that for the rest of the day I can't actually remember what conversations I have actually had and which were just dreams.
There are lots more, probably, but I don't wanna bore you all to death!

This post is to good to let die...let's keep it going for awhile.

I like patting things in stores - vases, fabric, boxes of stuff, spools of thread - I walk around going pat pat pat. It drives my daughter nuts. I like running my hands through bins of smooth things - shells, stones, beads. I don't do that at bulk foods but I sure would like to. I like real feather pillows that smell just a bit musty and are pretty flat so I can scruntch them up. I like very very soft beds that you can sink into. I like it when my cat puts one paw on my cheek in passing just to say hello. All these things make me happy.

Peace,

GOSH.... I'm gonna have to think about this.... it might be a few posts?

My green & black checker short pj's.... they feel so soft.

"Dylan Blanky" it is a plum colored SOFT blanket that Shane's nephew (who was 1-1/2 at the time) gave it to me for my 1st Christmas home with Shane. I sleep with it every night and curl up on the couch with it too!

Running my finger on the little dip on the skin above my upper lip before my nose. It is so soft and smoothe....I used to do that instead of sucking my thumb....I still do it to this day (when I don't feel well, and I'm trying to nap).

The smell of rain when it hits the pavement after it has not rained for a long time.

The smell of candles

The smell of coffee (even though I can't have any)

Watching kids play at the park on my lunch break (I don't have kids) it reminds me of my FAVORITE teacher Ms Marney from pre-school.... I can still see her face and smell her perfume. She used to write down the actions and the words that the kids would do while playing..... she gave them to my parents.... I smile when I read them. What it was like to be young and have no worries about anything..... just playing.

What I win the "what is it game"....hehehe makes me feel smart!! I SUCKED in school

Hearing the birds chirping outside the window there is a nest that I have watched them build

The sound of "You've got mail"....hehehe I know that bugs a lot of people but it makes me happy.

When I go to the inbox of my email and see one that from email address starts with Shane..... I get goose bumps everytime.

When the clock says 4:45pm!! TIME TO GO.......

When I wake up in the morning and realize I still have time before I have to get up...... even if it is only 5 mins.

When I pull into a parking lot that is FULL and someone right in front is pulling out!! "MINE"

ok.... that is all for now......

thunderstorms, springtime with flowers in bloom, the smell of fresh cut grass, long hugs with my husband, the smell of my grandmother's perfume (bird of paradise), certain smells in the kitchen bring back childhood memories, little house on the prarie, the first snowfall, clear starfilled nights, long walks in the forest, being in an art supply store when money is not an option, the smell of crayons, the way my dogs welcome me home, memories, .............I could go on and on.......

what i love also includes:

reading that Shane loves to hear his wife snoring

what else?

knowing that you made something on your own (whatever that may be: chocolate, a knitted scarf, a painting, someone smile)

a nice new pedicure. what a nice feeling, and oh so pretty!

plants. i love plants. i have a little bit of a green thumb, and i sure love to see green things growing (not even really flowering plants. i like the green ones). and even better is that nice smell of clean air when there are lots of plants in a room.

i also love (really really love!) a big man with strong arms and smiley crinkles around his eyes. *sigh* (OK, but that's not weird, is it? but it's still true)

Okay, that's too cute about the wife snoring!

As for the ketchup on mac cheese? Ew! My boyfriend does the same exact thing. His latest weird food mix is he'll put cream cheese on his saltine crackers.

In my family, it's ketchup on scrambled eggs, syrup on sausage, and icing (as in cake icing) on saltines. All of which I have done at some point in my life...

Hi,

I am thankful for so many things but since I am limited I will onlyl list a few:

Going to the 99c store with my 84yr old mom and having lots of laughs.
Seeing my husband comfortable at home in his white undershirt.
Taking pictures with my digital camera and changing them up with picture -it and then printing them out. You can really erase wrinkles!
Cooking something good on a cold, rainy day.

And best of all, any day that I feel good!!!!

PS: I know I'm not supposed to mention puppies but I love
petting my dog, Rusty.

What makes me happy:

the smell of spring time
hearing the loons calling to each other on the lake at sunset
watching the sun go down
the smell of my grandmother's perfume
smarties
the feel of tanning oil on my skin
running cold water on my feet
poetry
the smell of gasoline
slipping into a bed with warm, clean sheets

I could go on forever...not all of these things are obscure...but they all make me happy!!

all except the ketchup and eggs, which now i think i ought to try!

my mother jokes that when i made cakes when i was younger, i was always stingy with the icing on the cake so i could save lots of it for on the saltines! glad to know that's not just my family! (PS: yes, i still do this and i'm not stingy with the icing on the cake- i just make twice as much so there's plenty left for crackers! i just can't eat 'em now. )

Oh I love colours too. I can't wait till I can plant loadsa flowers in my garden. I just adore lots of colourful flowers.

I love trees. Is that weird enough? I feel really "at home" under trees: they make me calm and happy. Si jokes that I'm either an elf or a hobbit (we're both major LOTR fans).

And the sound of wind in the rigging of boats at harbour. That just takes me back to happy holidays as a kid. The noise drives most people nuts, but I love it.

Well, mine are really, super weird:

*Making people laugh even if it's AT me!

*The feeling I get when I'm riding in my awesome car with my shades on and the window down so that the wind can whip my hair around!

*My sister's cheeks! They are so soft and pudgy (she's still a baby!)!!

*Playing on team sports. The feeling of knowing that eevryone is supporting you and cheering you on is amazing! Althgouh I don't play on any teams anymore because I'm a school nerd, I have gym class and when people call out to you and say, "Yeah Jess!! We know you can do it!!" It's a great thing!

*Privacy! I love being home alone and being free to do whatever I please.

**Blowing up balloons. It's a fantastic stress reliever!

*It makes me super happy when other people are happy because I think that everyone deserves as much happiness as they can get! (I know that sounds like a hippie statement)

Well that's all I can think of at the moment...

(Warning - I actually scared myself at how deep I got with this post! Excuse the random ramblings...)

I was actually thinking about this post last night when I was sitting outside a coffee shop with my boyfriend and a friend of ours. They were off on their usual chatter about cars, and while I know enough to follow along, I was too tired to concentrate that hard.

So I started looking around and noticed a guy closing up his flower shop (it was about 10pm-ish). We were downtown in nearby Pleasanton so there were only a few people walking about the streets. Every once in a while, a couple would be strolling past the flower guy. Some would stop to chat for a few minutes, while others offered only a smile and greeting. For each couple, once they started to leave, the flower guy would quickly grab a carnation and hand it to the guy so that he could give it to his signifigant other. Always free - never accepting money for it.

This got me thinking as to how much each person can effect someone's life. That couple could have been fighting or going through difficult times, and that one free thoughtfulness might have been a bright spot in whatever was going on in their lives. A thoughtful action like that is very rare where I live so it was funny to realize how much of an impression it made to witness that. Watching things like that definitely makes me happy and thankful.

It's taken me a couple days to reply to this one, but my exams are almost over (one more, on monday) so I can take a break and have a little fun on the message board. I am thankful for / made happy by:
law school -- and my parents' willingness to pay for it!
reading anything and everything all the time
living all by myself
Law and Order on tv all the time
the sound of the subway going under my building, real soft and rumbling
the sound of my boyfriend snoring, when I'm lucky enough to be sleeping by him (he lives in london)
finding the smallest place I can fit into and then just kind of curling up in there. Mom says she used to find me in closets when I was little.
Seeing both of my brothers happily married
Catching my parents making out
My grandmother's tears at the national anthem (she was a POW), her smile when we all remember my grandfather, her amazingly strong hands kneading dough or preparing lamb (she's 84 and strong as an ox).
Being a Godmother -- I know we are supposed to skip the things like babies and puppies, but two years ago when my then-pregnant cousin asked me to be the baby's Godmother, I was lonely, going through a breakup, feeling insignificant and useless. I was praying all the time that God would just give me someone I could be madly in love with, without having to worry about being loved back or somehow losing my individuality. Well really I was talking about a man but he gave me my little Katie girl and she has been all of those things to me. The boyfriend came later, after I was already happy. Funny how those things work.
Going to Church is just about my favorite thing to do. I go to the church where my mother grew up, and where my grandparents were founders. Everyone has moved away now so I only have some second cousins and stuff there, but somehow the subway ride to Brooklyn and the 5-block walk to church is the most peaceful hour of my week. Being in Church makes me feel like everything is right with the world. Getting kidnapped by church ladies and taken out to lunch is pretty wonderful too.
Daydreaming about spending the summer in London makes me happy.
Walking through Central Park 3 or 4 times a week with my best friend is pretty great.
Cooking makes me feel calm and peaceful and accomplished.
Taking a night off from homework and socializing just to lay on the couch and rot makes me happy too.
Finding a real find at an antique store or Salvation Army (where I got my fantastic amazing dresser) makes me pretty happy.
Making a pot of tea and forgetting to drink it makes me laugh, because my mom does it all the time and I always made fun of her for it.
Having my brothers and sisters-in-law really close to NYC makes me happy.
Having my IBS under control makes me happier than anything!

I'm sure there is much more, but is anyone really that interested?

This is complete the NYer in me. I am thankful for my LIRR ride into Manhattan.(of course sans any delays that may occur). There is just something about that skyline that no other city has. I am thankful that my city which has seen utter devastation (which I experienced firsthand) and destruction has survived and grown more vibrant than ever. The city in and of itself is a living and breathing organism. I have been lucky enough to grow up here and be a part of it all. And who can beat those crazy cab rides one takes while they are on the town. I love New York.

Yay for NYC! What is it about this place? Even watching people throw their hands up in the air when tourists stop in the middle of a sidewalk or a cabbie makes a right on red is somehow reassuring. And I know what you mean about the skyline and that first approach to the city. It's still looking a little toothless to me but you are right, it is a reminder of how resilient we are! One gripe though -- how friggin long is the columbus circle construction going to take? I have to walk through there every day on the way to school (Fordham Law at Lincoln Center) and honestly I don't think they're ever going to finish!

Amanda,

All I have to say is that NY is under constant construction. It has taken the city 3 months to smash the street in front of my apt and repave it. And they're still not done!

Another thing to be thankful NYC Construction!

How many more years of Law School?

Trees. I love trees. I think it has something to do with my childhood in Maine. When I'm down at our new property, I feel so soft inside, surrounded by all the firs and cedars around me.

Water. I love water. Just lakes and rivers though. Oceans scare me. I want to be on the water, rowing or sculling, listening to the rhythmic sound of my blades moving through the water, propelling me backwards.

Loons. I love loons. When I was a little girl, my bedroom window opened to the lake, only 20 feet away, and I kept my window open all night long. The sounds of the calling loons over the lake would soothe me to sleep every night.

Fir balsam. I love the smell. Reminds me of the Maine pine trees. As a little girl I used to run naked in the woods, and the smell of those pine trees was all around me.

Geese. Canadian geese. They fly in "V" formation overhead, squawking at each other as they fly by. They're beautiful and graceful. I love watching them.

Beavers and otters. Ferns in the forest. Babbling brooks. Croacking frogs. Little fawns crossing the forest.

A sunny day. And worms.

Hi Amanda,

I just wanted to say thank you for this reply. I have great faith in God but have not been going to church for the past few years and have really been feeling a need to go back. This reply has reminded me of what I am missing. For that, I thank you!!!

I love it. We never miss Judge Judy.

I worked for one of you guys a long time ago (but only briefly!), and I was constantly having to fend off creditors. It got very old very fast, so I walked into the Vice President's office one day and just came out with it: "Why aren't we paying our bills?!" Mr. Pinsky turned to me and said, "Well, I'll tell ya. Each month we put all the bills in a hat. We pull out some of them and pay 'em. But if we get any hassle from any of the creditors, we tell 'em, 'next month you don't get put in the hat!'"

There really isn't much to tell about this place especially when compared to NYC! LOL! When people ask me if I am from here I always reply with, unfortunatly! I have always wanted to move to another state and live my life but I have never taken that first step. The closest I have been to New York is Chicago and I have been there 4 times. I really enjoyed it although it is much colder there. I am a southern girl at heart I guess!

Ahh, I am sure Oklahoma City has some good characteristics to it. There must be some things you like about it. Come on up to NY, we'd love to have you.

You'd have the rich NYC guys all after you. We're suckers for a Southern accent!

LOL! Yes I used to do customer service type of work over the telephone right out of high school and would get men from different states telling me about how they loved the accent! Yes I need to plan to visit NY sometime. I have my summer vacation planned to go to Florida this year already. I haven't been there before either but have a friend that lives there. I am looking forward to soaking up some rays! So I assume you have been in NY your entire life?

ok. this is really weird. But cloth diapers make me happy.
I used em on my daughter and now on my 9mo old son.
They're so soft and have wonderful fun prints. They are just as easy as a disposable (they velcro or snap, not like the diapers you're htinking of) . They're better for my babys tushie, for the enviornment and for my wallet.
Plus instead of supporting some huge conglomerate like huggies or pampes i'm supporting work at home moms.

so changing diapers, cloth diapers and washing them and hanging them on the line. That makes me happy. How obscure is that

Supersilks, that is very obscure! Good for you! I'm glad that makes you happy! I don't know how you do it, but I'm glad you like it! I'm sure it does save you a ton of money!!! Just curious....how do you go about cleaning a messy diaper? It seems like a lot of hard messy work! But I do applaude you. Good for the enviroment!!!! And it is nice to support stay at home moms!

I've been to the rose hill campus and it's gorgeous. What year are you?

I love:
The smell of freshly mowed grass
Seeing new leaves on the trees and new flowers blooming in the spring.
Long white window sheers being blown by a gentle breeze
Balmy wind right before a big storm
My old, soft cotton panties when my tummy hurts
