I understand completely what you are going through. I have been on HRT for the past 10 years and in Sept. I decided that I wanted to get off. The doc had me wean myself over a couple of months and by the time I stopped taking the Primrin all together I was experiencing terrible migraines, terrible hot flashes, very moody (angry one minute and crying the next). I have been afraid to try to stop again even though I really don't want to take it anymore.

Do a search on the internet, there is a ton of info out there talking about how long these symptoms will last, etc. Sometimes if I know how long something is going to last I can deal with it better.

I wish you luck and send you hugs and hope you are feeling better.

Thanks for your kind wishes, Janey.

I've been through this before, when docs were trying to get me "normal," giving me estrogen, then testosterone, then progesterone -- pills, patches, even shots -- so by now I pretty much know what to expect. So I warned hubby to keep an eye out for the inevitable mood swings, and when he notices that I'm outta control, let me know. I'm sure he will!

I'm hoping that my age will work in my favor this time, that the menopause will be over, and all the soy I eat will "kick in."

If not, I'll go out in the garden and eat worms.

Lucky guy... I used to love, love, love red wine... but then I developed a stupid allergy. I'm jealous.

Kandee-
How much soy is too much? And what is goitigenic? (sorry don't know these things) I'm just wondering because I have been so fatigued lately and gained weight suddenly, so I'm on a high protein diet. That's helped the fatigue a ton, but I'm eating lots of soy to get in the protein.

Bev-Hope you're feeling better today! Hormones are terrible aren't they? I always cry for week before my period. Just touch me and I burst into tears! Even with the continuous BC, I still have "cycles" sorta, or at least I must since I still get this week of crying nonstop without the period after.

Bev,

When I told my doc of all the troubles I was experiencing when trying to get off HRT he said that my body was probably not ready to go without the hormones yet. He said to keep trying and eventually I will be able to stop all together.

I am hoping for you that your age will help you get off the HRT. It would make sense because if you weren't on HRT you would be going through menapause naturally.

I will keep you in my thoughts.

Hi Julie,

There are a number of schools of thought on how much is to much soy. Some say no more than 30 mg of soy isoflavones per day, others say a lot more is safe. I really don't know and think it is individual based on age, health, family health history, etc.

A goiter is an enlarged thryoid gland (front of the neck). Do a google search with just the word goiter in an you'll find a ton of stuff and pictures. It is usually caused by lack of iodine in the diet but because lack of iodine in a normal diet is rare these days they have looked at other foods that can cause goiters, like soy.

I think if I were you, I'd get a blood thyroid panel test. I may explain the weight gain (and fatique) if you are the least bit hypothyroid. The likelyhood of becoming hypothyroid increases with age, with it affecting 1 in 4 women....about the same as for IBS. Hypothyroidism has a huge affect on depression/emotions as well. Before diagnosed I thought for sure it was the perimenopause that caused the severe depression. Not so........it was the thyroid.

Maybe you could sub some of your soy protein by getting it from other sources......fish, fowl, ground nuts, beans, legumes, egg whites, etc.

I'm a firm believer, like a lot of experts that a natural progertone cream (I used to use Progest) can eleviate many symptoms associated with a fluctuation in estrogen levels....PMS, crying, depression.........etc. I think it is sorely overlooked as an easy way to avoid the monthly crazies.

Good luck...........

Hey! It's a soluble fiber. It is.

Okay, so I get a little outa control on this stuff. Actually, I have to stop ordering it. I just got my last order of some 10 bags, and I've already gone thru it all!

Jen, what do you have as a "treat" (besides men)?

you acted as if it's a hardship to eat the Veggie Stix! you crack me up! they are SO yummy!!! man, i wish i could have some right now, but i've vowed to be good.

what do I have for a treat (besides men)? well, i don't even get the men! i haven't been out on a date in a while, and rarely do men talk to me. so i stick with sorbet. that's my big treat.... and i really love that smoothie every morning! other than that, no real treats. i bought some gluten-free cookies this weekend. they're ok. (GF food is very dense. they're certainly not a good warm Tollhouse cookie!)
