Okay boys and girls, this'll be fun. One of the weird-but-cool things about being a writer or editor is that you learn an unbelievable lot of otherwise-useless stuff, trivial little notes of all kinds of things. This has always been one of my favorites.

I noticed about 20 years ago when I was sitting out on the deck with a couple friends that people duck when birds fly over. A BIG bird flew over where we were sitting, and none of us saw it (roof) but all three of us caught the shadow of the bird on the lawn next to us in our peripheral vision. And all three of us ducked! First it amazed us, then it cracked us up. I don't know of any way to test this (remote-control hawk perhaps?) but if you ever see it, you'll grin now.

Apparently it's something in our longterm genetic makeup, something vaguely remembered from when humans were prey and birds were predators. Or perhaps it's just a genetic aversion to pigeon poop on one's head.

But it's fascinating, I think, that a bird SHADOW nearby will make people duck.

Black Bears....

I've had too many experiences that I believe they are attracted to me 1: jump on my tent while I was asleep 2: follow me out of the woods (didn't know until I was on the road, thank goodness) 3: got into my backpack and drank my gatorade 4: cross paths during a Search and Rescue search and would not move

I get weak in the knees know when I see/hear a black bear!!!

When we bought the old house on the lake in Oregon, it was pretty beat up. It was a second residence for us (we lived in California), so we were seldom there. While we were busy fixing it up, we had no furniture in it so we were sleeping in sleeping bags in front of the fireplace on New Years Eve 1986. I wasn't sleeping well -- strange sounds, you know -- and when I opened my eyes I saw the little eyes up above me, watching me from the balcony of the upstairs bedroom. It was the biggest rat I've ever seen! OMG! I freaked out. I immediately woke up hubby, and, in the middle of the night, we chased that thing, trapping him in the storage attic, where we closed the door behind us. I told hubby we were gonna put the place back on the market first thing in the morning!

Unfortunately, that animal would not let us sleep. He kept us awake all night long, scratching on the attic door! Finally -- SOMEHOW -- he managed to find a way out through the roof. When we got up in the morning, we opened the door to the attic, only to find huge claw marks all up and down the door.

I won't tell you about the bats -- Brrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

i'm afraid of car accidents. i don't want to make a mistake and hurt someone else.

big, angry dogs scare me.

i don't like roller coasters. i'm gonna try some little kiddie ones though bcos i've never ridden on one. but the speed of fast theme park rides doesn't make me feel very well, and so i don't like roller coasters.

i'm okae with the spiders and snakes. i like animals, so they don't bother me much. bees sometimes scare me just a little.

hello,
i wish i could enjoy roller coasters like others, but they make me feel dizzy and such. so i'm gonna try out the little kiddie roller coasters at kings dominion, va. they shouldn't be too bad with the twists and turns. but i can never try the big roller coasters at theme parks. the speed and loops and turns- i'm not sure if i'll be able to handle them. oooh scary movies! i love 'em bcos they freak me out but then i'll totally worry about them later. like the movie "the others" with nicole kidman-- that scared me for awhile.

hee hee, your fear is understandable. once bfore class, i went to the cafeteria to buy a little carton of milk. i was walking back using the sidewalk to my car. there are trees there. this seagull starts to chase me and i totally freak out running away. this one guy tried to help me and the seagull finally went away. it was scary at the time, an animal chasing me. have you watched the movie "the birds" by alfred hithcock? i think that's his name.
