i'm bored. entertain me.

does anyone have a phobia?! and i'm talking "phobia" not "things that freak me out." i mean something that makes you want to run the other way screaming! something where you just have that feeling that if you do it/see it/smell it/eat it/hang around it, eventually it's going to be the end of you!

me? i have a horrible fear of spiders! i don't know why, though. no horrid experience, though my brother did get bitten when we were young, but it wasn't a horrific thing, just gross. i tend to hyperventilate and on occasion burst into tears when i see a spider- but only for the big hairy ones. *shudder*

i cannot kill them myself. as a rule, i don't kill bugs, i scoop 'em up and put 'em outside. spiders, i hire out and get someone to kill 'em for me. (ew, i have the creepies just writing this.... BLECH!)

if you want, i can tell you my "I'm so pathetic i cry when I see spiders" story...

i also have a secondary phobia- i'm afraid of heights. not in a plane, but definitely from tall buildings and from bridges.(NOTE: do you have any idea at all how many cities have some big tall building that is a landmark "must see" when you visit!?!? NO THANKS!) the weird thing is, i also have a fear of the deep sea... it's not that i'm afraid of drowning (though that is a horrific thought) or of sharks or anything...i actually think it's related to the fear of heights. it's stupid, tho, 'cause when you're out in the ocean, sure the bottom is miles and miles away, but it's not like you're falling, right!? ah, well, who can explain a phobia....

so told you mine, now you tell me yours!

I am absolutely terrified of birds flying in the sky. I will be walking along doing just fine and a bird will fly over my head and I bend over to duck. Like that is going to hide me. What is going through my head I don't know, but it absolutely terrifies me for a bird to fly over my head.

The really freaky thing about it is that I absolutely love birds as pets so it is not birds in general. Just birds flying above my head. How freaky am I????

Phobias? Sure.

I am terrified of needles. I'm getting better as I get older, but in general the things freak me out. I hate having blood taken, hate getting shots, would never get a tatoo, etc. Needles are bad, bad, bad.

Other than that, I'm not really irrationally afraid of anything. Heights are largely fine, spiders and snakes, no big deal.

But those needles. Yuck.

Speaking of spiders though, does anyone have any ideas for what I should do about the black widow living in the post box? We have one big set of locked boxes for the week and the other day a black widow ran out of mine. Obviously I'm not keen on sticking my hand into a dark place where a poisonous spider lives. Thoughts?

I know this sounds really bizarre, but I HATE moths!! I hate them way more than any bug ever, even spiders (and I hate spiders a lot!).

When a moth gets in the house, I will literally scream a high-pitched shriek like someone is murdering me. I can't bear to kill most bugs, so I make someone around me kill it.
I don't know what it is....my mom thinks I'm so weird because she says, "It's not like they bite or anything."
I KNOW THAT! I don't care, they just remind me of these disgusting hairy, scary things!!

Anyway, that's my weird phobia. I also don't like heights where there is no protection from keeping you from falling off. Like a big mountain or the top of a building. I'm not so bad if there is plenty of protection around me, so that I know I can't fall.... scary!!

I'm petrified of flying...I've flown many times in my life but the last time we lost an engine on the flight and all the lights in the cabin went out and the landing was less than stellar, and then September 11th happened and well, this girl never wants to get on a plane again!
It's a lousy phobia too, because I've always wanted to visit England/Europe, which may be a little hard if I can't get my butt on a plane...maybe I could take a boat...

Good lord, lately it seems like it's hard to find things that don't make me want to scream and run the other way but I do have a few that actually exist when I am residing in reality as well. I am *terrified* now of being in the ocean when I can't touch the ground. I was always very into the ocean and was brought up to respect it(ex surfer dad to thank) and have fun and was never afraid. A couple summers ago I went with my friend, Sarah, and we were far out body surfing and having fun. Well we kept getting pushed by the current to the side and couldn't figure out why so we would swim back(it was the current pushing us AWAY from the undertow) Eventually we were so far out and realized there were no people anywhere near us and no waves breaking that far out. I couldn't swim in any direction it was the worst feeling I have ever had. I was stuck and kept swimming and getting sooo tired. Finally a lifegaurd had to come and rescue us *can you say embarrassing?!?!* But the thing is as soon as I was about to grab his hand this random wave came out of nowhere and slammed me to the ground...there were NO waves around until he came. Weird stuff but since then I haven't been able to go very far into the ocean. Rottweilers and pitbulls also make me want to run the other way.

My mom has the opposite. She is afraid of birds indoors. Once when she was younger a bird flew into her house and apparently scared her to death, i think that might have been when it all started to go wrong for her with birds.

I have absolutely no idea where it came from. It actually didn't even start until I was an adult. My husband and I had just gotten engaged and at the beach when it started. We were walking along in a shopping center at Myrtle Beach in the parking lot and all of a sudden I was on the ground covering my head. I think he probably should have started to have second thoughts then, but he didn't and look what he got himself into.

my best friend is deathly afraid of moths, too! you and i could hang out 'cause i've had lots of practice at remaining calm when there's a moth and then subtly getting it "gone" before Ange freaks!

when she was little, she was playing or something and her mouth was open. a moth flew in and she nearly choked to death on it. hence, the fear of moths. she's almost 30 but still clamps her mouth shut when she sees a moth! (she's getting braver everyday tho! )

I got attacked by a Blue Jay once, I don't blame her, but it totally startled me. I was walking in the park behind my Mum's house and looked down and saw a little baby bird staring back up at me, I stopped, kinda looked down and asked him what he was doing sitting on the ground (I didn't really expect an answer), just then I heard a loud squawk from overheard and then mother bird smacked me in the head! I just ran away as this birds chasing me. It must have been a funny sight for anybody watching.

Hey Kelly, what airline/plane were you on when you lost an engine? That can be pretty scary, but don't worry, we do practice that all the time (not with passengers on board). Although right now the plane I'm flying only has one engine. (I like two better)

It was Canada 3000...it was a pretty scary experience, and I was only 16 at the time and seperate from my family (they all got to sit together, I was sitting with a couple) and the couple started going at it (for lack of a better term) and let's just say, that's not how I wanted to to spend what I thought would be my last minutes on earth (of course I know now I was overreacting!).
Glad to know you guys practice these things though

two things, tornados and electricity. both stem from youthful traumas. i actually saw a tornado out the front window of our house when i was 5 or 6. i thought i'd dreamt it but my mom confirmed it recently. it's one of my standard nightmares to this day.
about the same age i stuck a hair pin in an electrical outlet and got knocked cold. now i can't stand to be in the same room as andy when he's changing a fuse much less rewiring an outlet or something.
but the tornado one is really scary. even though i've never ever seen another one since.

Ick, I hate really big moths! One flew into our house last year that I thought was a small bird at first it was so stinkin huge! I hid under a chair...You just reminded me though of how afraid of cochroachs I am. When I was 11 we were in Hawaii and this gigantic cochroach flew into my hair and got stuck! They had to use a fork to get it out....whenever I am in Hawaii and it's dark I refuse to wear my hair down. *Shivers*

Megs, OOOOOHHHH...cockroaches are SICK!!! I hate those just as much as moths, but thank God they are not around my area quite as much. But if I saw one in my house, I would definitely scream and freak out!! I wish my cats would kill the bugs, but all they do is paw them and stare with amazement and curiosity! I'm like, "Kill the bug, Andy! Kill it!" And he just looks at me and then looks at the bug and does nothing.

Well.. as of this morning, I am scared of the creepy bug that is now floating dead in my bathtub (hopefully)! Ick.

When I wake up in the morning, I head directly for the shower and am usually still half asleep until the middle of my shower. So this morning when I went to turn on the water, I noticed this huge bug! I'm still not sure what the heck it is, but it's bigger than my thumb and looks like it comes from some desert country.

So I went to get a newspaper to let the little guy crawl on so I could dump him outside.. and he scurries so fast that I bet he'd clock almost 3 MPH. I'm not about to try to trap him now so I turn on the water to try to drown him.. and the creepy thing starts swimming!!

Needless to say I washed my hair in the kitchen sink and sponged today, and last I saw, the darn thing was still doing the backstroke in my tub.

Luckily I never have to take a shower again in that tub since I'm moving tomorrow and can just take a shower there. That's one way to get rid of a bug. LOL

And besides the creepy thing in my bathtub, I'm afraid of needles and falling from extreme heights.

Hey, LS, this story reminds me of my electrical shock treatment. I can't use the excuse that I was only 5 or 6, because it happened in 1974 when I was 30 years old.

We had just moved into a real old cottage on the coast. It was a total dump. We tore the place apart and completely "re-charmed" it. I mean, COMPLETELY, down to the electrical outlets in the walls. I removed the plates and found millions of cobwebs. Ew. Clever me, I took my screw driver to remove the cobwebs, accidentally touched the electrical wires, and BAM!

The shock actually threw me across the room and slammed me up against the far wall. What a jolt....

But we sure ended up with nice, clean electrical outlets!

Okay boys and girls, this'll be fun. One of the weird-but-cool things about being a writer or editor is that you learn an unbelievable lot of otherwise-useless stuff, trivial little notes of all kinds of things. This has always been one of my favorites.

I noticed about 20 years ago when I was sitting out on the deck with a couple friends that people duck when birds fly over. A BIG bird flew over where we were sitting, and none of us saw it (roof) but all three of us caught the shadow of the bird on the lawn next to us in our peripheral vision. And all three of us ducked! First it amazed us, then it cracked us up. I don't know of any way to test this (remote-control hawk perhaps?) but if you ever see it, you'll grin now.

Apparently it's something in our longterm genetic makeup, something vaguely remembered from when humans were prey and birds were predators. Or perhaps it's just a genetic aversion to pigeon poop on one's head.

But it's fascinating, I think, that a bird SHADOW nearby will make people duck.

When we bought the old house on the lake in Oregon, it was pretty beat up. It was a second residence for us (we lived in California), so we were seldom there. While we were busy fixing it up, we had no furniture in it so we were sleeping in sleeping bags in front of the fireplace on New Years Eve 1986. I wasn't sleeping well -- strange sounds, you know -- and when I opened my eyes I saw the little eyes up above me, watching me from the balcony of the upstairs bedroom. It was the biggest rat I've ever seen! OMG! I freaked out. I immediately woke up hubby, and, in the middle of the night, we chased that thing, trapping him in the storage attic, where we closed the door behind us. I told hubby we were gonna put the place back on the market first thing in the morning!

Unfortunately, that animal would not let us sleep. He kept us awake all night long, scratching on the attic door! Finally -- SOMEHOW -- he managed to find a way out through the roof. When we got up in the morning, we opened the door to the attic, only to find huge claw marks all up and down the door.

I won't tell you about the bats -- Brrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

i'm afraid of car accidents. i don't want to make a mistake and hurt someone else.

big, angry dogs scare me.

i don't like roller coasters. i'm gonna try some little kiddie ones though bcos i've never ridden on one. but the speed of fast theme park rides doesn't make me feel very well, and so i don't like roller coasters.

i'm okae with the spiders and snakes. i like animals, so they don't bother me much. bees sometimes scare me just a little.

hello,
i wish i could enjoy roller coasters like others, but they make me feel dizzy and such. so i'm gonna try out the little kiddie roller coasters at kings dominion, va. they shouldn't be too bad with the twists and turns. but i can never try the big roller coasters at theme parks. the speed and loops and turns- i'm not sure if i'll be able to handle them. oooh scary movies! i love 'em bcos they freak me out but then i'll totally worry about them later. like the movie "the others" with nicole kidman-- that scared me for awhile.

hee hee, your fear is understandable. once bfore class, i went to the cafeteria to buy a little carton of milk. i was walking back using the sidewalk to my car. there are trees there. this seagull starts to chase me and i totally freak out running away. this one guy tried to help me and the seagull finally went away. it was scary at the time, an animal chasing me. have you watched the movie "the birds" by alfred hithcock? i think that's his name.

I deathly afraid of railings! Not like, banisters, but like as if you were on the Eiffel Tower and you were up there and you lean over the railing to look down, ya know? I'm just so afraid that they're going break and I'm going to tumble down and go SPLAT right onto the pavement. I won't even go close to a railing! I'm fine with heights and being way up in a tall building an looking out the window (like the Sears Tower), but there's no way that I could be outside ona balcony way high up and lean over the skinny little pole that's around it! AAAAAHHHH!!!!!! Scary!!

Being scared of birds is fine! A lot of people I know are scared of them! I've never heard of a moth phobia, however....oh well!

Here's the weirdest one ever: My friend Persha used ot be afraid of GRASS! She wouldn't even touch it until she was about 8 or 9! Isn't that weird?? LOL!

jenX,

Okay, my phobias are:

~ Spiders (yikes!) Though, I have to recruit someone else to kill them b/c I just can't. I don't know why, but I don't want to get near them or hurt them. I just want them out of wherever they are.

~ Wasps, Bees, and anything that stings.

~ Dentists (Gosh those needles freak me out. Why can't they at least get micro needles???)

~ Moths (yuck)

~ Airplanes, Trains, and anything not driven by someone I know. Though, I've always wanted to fly to Paris or England. Oh well. I'm not really afraid to get on a plane, just don't want to. I rather travel by land.

That is all of them, I think. Boy, those are a lot huh?

I am terrified of snakes! There is a creek that flows on two sides of my house, there are snakes making thier way across my yard quite often. When I go out to walk in the yard, I always keep my eyes on the ground. I have lived here for 28 years, two summers ago I killed my first snake, when I think of it I can still feel my skin crawling.

I also have a fear of losing someone close to me.

Please take no offense here Jen, but some of your animations scare me!!

The Sears Tower scared the YIKES!!! out of me. Part of it was the elevator, when we got to the top, I was weak in the knees and shakey.

I was in the grocery store last week and I had a D attack, it was embarrasing, humiliating, and it scared me to death. So much so that I am so afraid of having it happen again, I dont want to go out in public.

Oh, and I have some more I forgot about:

~ Heights (I literally cannot go where it is too high. I get this crippling sense of panic and am unable to move. Thus, IBS is triggered and in a bad predicament.)

~ Snakes (Don't like the one's with fangs. I don't want to hurt any snakes or animals, I just don't want them near me. So as long as I'm not outside, I'm good. LOL.)

BALCONIES-- make me very scared! My aunt was on a balcony at a hotel with a few other people. There was no capacity level listed for the balcony. So while she and two or three other people were on it, it fell TWO STORIES and half way down a CLIFF! Fortunately, she only had a broken hip and bruises.

Outcome: building was not up to it's building code and a big LAWSUIT!!

I watched it a long time ago. I would absolutely die. It is really amusing with me though. I know there is nothing that they can do to hurt me, but it still just totally freaks me out. I'm glad to see that other people are at least a little freaked.

Wow, Aunie! That's really scary!! It kind of goes hand-in-hand with mine, but I don't really mind balconies. I'll sit on one and relax, but I won't go anywhere NEAR the railing!!

This is STILL going, so I thought I'd answer as I'm bored!

Uhhh...where to start!

Sharks - I have a full-on phobia 'bout them and I've managed to extend this to anything with teeth in water!

Confined spaces.

Heights.

Big spiders, tho I'm okay at removing not too big ones. But I definitely can't touch them. Spiders that jump are the worst - I squash them - they freak me out big-time.

Moths. And flying bugs in general. especially big beetles. Urgh!

Think that's it, but my memory's poohey, so its probably not!
