Does anyone know if using an enema daily is okay for ibs-c? Since I have gotten ibs I have hemrrhoids and going is very painful after taking something like milk of mag. So I prefer the enemas to avoid painful diarreha all day long. I am just curious if they are addicting or bad for long term use?

Hello,
I'm not sure about enemas. But for my symptoms, I exercise and take citracil, eat fruits & veggies, drink water, eat fiber cereal in the morning. I try to stay on a schedule when I eat too and eat in small amounts. I also eat prunes or multi-grain toast with apricot spread in the morning before my cereal. When I wake up, I drink 1/2 cup of prune juice to use the bathroom.
I'm going to take a month following what this website says to do for the diet, and hopefully it will work. If not, I will see a doctor. Best Wishes.

i don't think it is good to use them everyday.

you need to train your body to go without the use of an enema.

i'm no professional but i really think the daily use of it is not such a hot idea.

um.... i think that's like douching... .they say it's not that great an idea especially if you're depending on them too much.... you don't want to jump start the car when you could simply wait for the key to turn and the engine to turn over!

you could be aggravating the hemmorrhoids, couldn't you? i know you're trying not to and that you're only trying to relieve your symptoms, but i would think that introducing forgeign materials and chemicals (even if it's just saline or whatever is in an enema) is not ultimately helping... could be hindering. does your Doc know you're doing that? i would make a call and swing it past her/him.

i would definitely look into soluble fiber supplements . if you're on one and still having troubles, you need to switch 'til you find one that's going to regulate you better... you shouldn't have to put up with such things!

by the way, i would recommend you post questions like this on the IBS Diet Board instead of here in the Living Room. We usually wander around various subjects and chat (and natter) here and leave the heavy-hitting IBS Diet stuff for the other board.
