losing weight - or not!

I have a question for those out there in the 40+ age category. Do you find it harder to lose weight now that 5-10 years ago? I resolved with the new year to get rid of the 5 pounds that have snuck their way in over the past couple of years, thinking "no big deal." I began exercising 30-45 min./day, 4-5 days per week and made sure my calorie intake was 1500-1800 per day - pretty balanced foods and with the IBS, pretty low fat as always. I can not budge one pound off!!! I have always been able to lose weight pretty easily if I just stepped up the exercise and was reasonable about what I ate. I refuse to feel starving, so 1500 calories is as low as I am willing to go. Is that my problem? Anyone else having this trouble and have you found a good jump starter?

Sorry, Andie, I'm afraid I can't be very encouraging. Unfortunately, our metabolism slows down in direct proportion to our aging process.

When I was 20, I could lose 5 pounds in one weekend. When I was 40, it took a week. When I was 50, it took a year. Now that I'm almost 60, it DOESN'T TAKE AT ALL.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Hi Andie; lOSING WEIGHT has always been a struggle for me, but lately I have seem to have dropped a few pounds. I have a long way to go, though. I am trying to be more active as well as watch my diet. IT IS hard, though, because my family likes desserts and sweets so it is hard to stay away from them. a few ideas from dr, phil, is to do something instead of eating, something that yoyu can't do at the same time as eat. ALSO, I AM doing a thing called donate your steps to health research, where you use a pedometer to count your steps as you walk and eneter then on their site, it is called CANADAONTHGO.CA. THAT IS my plan for the year.

bev; it doesn't have to be that way. A lot of poeple in their later years are in great shape and are thin. TRhere is a lot of evidence for that.

as you get older it is very hard to lose.as long as I was walking 5 miles a day.I did pretty good,you know girls what I wonder is why///are we fat or some of us,all we do is eat an poop.when does it have time to turn into fat.I eat my cereal,run an poop,eat my toast run an poop,drink my tea yes you guess it run an poop.since I have been on Heather diet I have lost about 40 lbs,but I needed it.an could lose 40 more.

I hear you, seems like I'm the same way, but OMG is it easy to have the weight pile on if one is not cautious. I'm on a rampage to get the 15 off I gained when I started to eat (somewhat) normal again. I fear it will be merely an effort in futility.

At least there is comfort in knowing I am not the only one Thanks to all for your thoughts. I will just have to focus on the other reasons I exercise (stress-relief, feels good (to be done!), etc. and the benefits of a healthy diet! Nothing like IBS to keep me honest!

I won't pretend to know (I'm young, sorry!), but I wanted to add that something many women don't consider is adding strength training. I suggest keeping the amount you do, and them a few times a week try lifting weights/doing weight machines. The more muscle you have in your body, the higher your metabolism gets!
