Hey guys... so I'm sitting here with the tube down my throat. A big NOT FUN. Has anyone else done this test? Is there anything to make it easier? I've already decided talking is out. Help please?

Tell me more. I don't have a clue what you are talking about but it sure doesn't sound fun. What do they think the ph will tell them? Is it all the way down your throat and you aren't gagging Yuck! You have my sympathy!

Tube down your throat? I had one down my throat once -- it was a periscope -- but it was done by an ENT. It was horrible.

Honey, I'm sorry -- I can't imagine why you're doing this by yourself -- how much longer -- and, more importantly, WHY?

Hey guys, so the 24 hr PH test measures the acidity levels in your stomach for, well, 24 hrs. They numb up your nose (not much fun) and put a catheter down it, and then you wear it down your esophogus for 24 hrs. It's hooked up to what looks like a CD player that records the info. All of this sucks, including the fact that the bottom of the tube kinda hurts when I talk, breathe, eat, or swallow, but the worst part is that it comes out of my nose and is taped up the side of my face. Very, very attractive.

Anyway, it's a test for GERD and GERD related stuff. On the plus side, I can tell you that 30 cm down my stomach it's 5.8 on the PH scale, and 20 cm down it's 7.5. Vaguely interesting, huh?

Ooooh. Doesn't sound like much fun. Are you having symptoms of GERD? I would think they would just put you on a med if you were having reflux symptoms. Do you turn it all in and have the tube taken out tomorrow? Hope you can sleep o.k.

Yeah, I was actually diagnosed with GERD before I ever got diagnosed with IBS. I am on medicine for it, and have been for a long, long time, but some times the medicine doesn't work and I get horrible heart burn that manifests itself as terrible, terrible chest and back pain... so they're trying to see what's going on.

I get the tube out tomorrow at 4 pm... I can't wait! As for sleeping, I'll see I guess!

Thanks for the kind thoughts guys... medical tests just suck, huh?

Are you able to eat with that tube in there? What will they be able to do differently for your GERD? Is GERD the same thing as acid reflux? Aren't you tired of all these questions?

Nah, I'm actually grateful for the questions, like I said I can't really talk out loud right now, and any distraction is welcome.

I can eat. I can't eat anything that's acidic, but I don't usually do that anyway. In a minute we're going to go get some ice cream (the ok stuff) because I'm hoping the coldness will numb my throat again.

Yeah, I think GERD is the same as acid reflux... I'm not sure though.

And I have no idea what we can do differently for me after these tests. I'll find out next Friday when I have an appointment with my gastroenterologist.

Hopefully what ever it is ends the pain!!!

Just to finish my pity party... on top of this I have menstrual cramps! Waahhh!!!

Is your throat sore too? I do feel sorry for you. The closest I've been is having my nose scoped and even though they shot that spray in there I thought it hurt alot! I've also seen the eating disorder pt's with tubes in, and they never are very excited either. I sure hope the ice cream helps. Do you have trouble eating chocolate with your GERD?
I take Prilosec, and so far it seems to help. I can sure tell if I forget to take it.

Wow, you poor sweet thing, you. I just wonder why some people get dealt such a raw deal. It's SOOOO unfair. Amazing that you can go through all this as well as you are, Girlfriend! I'd be heading for the Jack.
