See, hearing was the first one to go with my Nana. Followed by her mind... (she has dementia). She's a very interesting lady to have a conversation with. She tells me all sorts of fascinating things about stuff that happened in the 40's, but she doesn't remember anything from the past five or so.
It's sad to watch...

I totally agree-when you have kids it is really tough to work fulltime and give them the time they need. I have a son with learning problems. He is a smart kid and the sweetest child I have ever known, but now is ready to enter junior high and struggling with the fact that he won't be in the same classes as his friends, and thinks the classes he has to take are for stupid kids. Ugh, I hate it when they hurt-I wish I could take the pain for him! I'm sure you understand with ADHD.

That is so typical of dementia. I hate that disease. It takes perfectly wonderful people and robs them of their dignity and short term memory.

I'm sorry to hear about your (Grandma Nana).
I agree it is sad to watch, but listening to a patient talk about their past is fun. I love hearing the stories of their childhood. I was spoon feeding a patient the other night and she wouldn't eat. I finally figured out how to feed her. Every time she asked me, "What should I do now"?, I told her she had to eat and she said okay and opened her mouth.

They say having dementia patients talk about their past and look at old pictures is very good for them. So you are doing a great service by listening to the stories.

Yeah, the dignity is the worst part. My Nana has a really hard time accepting the fact that people need to bathe her and dress her and that she can't use the stove anymore. She gets so frustrated and angry with herself and with my uncle, whom she lives with.
When I'm in town she usually lets me dress her without a fight which makes me feel good. She's a lot better for me than the day help that was coming in. She does have terrific stories though! And a house full of bizarre and interesting stuff. We found a newspaper from the day Lincoln was shot!

Joan hope you can keep Chinagrl busy for awhile.
My 9 year old really wants to talk and btw he saw your picture and thinks you dress really fancy.
I can relate to special need children. Hope your son adjust well to Junior High.
