I've been wondering for a long time what this is but I've been too embarrassed to ask. I don't want to appear stupid, but when I did aerobics (okay, it was back in the '80's, it wasn't THAT long ago!), this word was never used to describe a workout. It seems to have appeared out of the blue.

What the hell is a pilate?

Ok... maybe I'm wrong...I just found this.... web page
Quote:

Suzi Lonergan's BodyPower - Pilates! Video

Product Description:
Pilates combines isometric exercises and limbering stretches that encourage increased strength and flexibility. Body Power Pilates illustrates the practice of Pilates in an easy-to-follow format. Instructor Suzi Lonergan leads this 40-minute workout with clear demonstrations and concise cueing. This program includes two sessions: a 15-minute basic application for beginners and a 25-minute intermediate set for more advanced students. Participants will find a workout to suit their distinct fitness level with the variation of intensity and difficulty offered by these two programs. Pilates terminology is explained and used throughout this video. Terms like "powerhouse" and "the frame" help students gain a better understanding of correct body alignment and add to the authenticity of this application. The core muscles of the abdomen get some intensive training here and the movements are quick and controlled. Because these postures require both skeletal and muscular strength, safety becomes a focus of the instruction. Suzi Lonergan's BodyPower - Pilates! revives youthfulness, increases strength and flexibility, increases energy and self confidence, strengthens your immune system, assures better, more restful sleep, improves posture, balance and coordination, creates strength without bulk, improves joint mobility, and enriches your sex life!

Hey.... right on.... "enriches your sex life"

Oh, you may wanna post your question the the yogo board too??

It's SUCH a great workout. My future mother in law got Windsor Pilates for xmas and loves it.

I have Pilates for Dummies (I think I got this at Target) and Pilates Conditioning for Weight Loss. Here's a link to Windsor Pilates, which I have also: http://www.winsorpilates.com/index.php?acnt=GHWZZ01H

It's a great introduction to Pilates and well worth the cost. It strengthens your tummy, legs, backside, back, arms. It's made my legs leaner and I just feel more flexible all-around.

All the above DVDs are fine for beginners (esp. Dummies and Windsor), and also allow for growth within the video. You work at your own pace. I strongly recommend it.

I do both Pilates and Yoga (Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss, Crunch! Yoga) regularly and not only do they both help me stay in shape, they help my IBS tremendously.

Hope this helps!

I am a HUGE Pilates fan! I like it so much more than Yoga because it's structured differently... so much of the Yoga seems to me wrapped up in meditation and breathing and stuff, and frankly I don't have the patience for that. With Pilates, you do each exercise a few times and move on, so the time goes by really fast and it's really challenging. I've done both mat classes and machine classes, and I think the quality of the class depends on the instructor. I liked my instructor in St. Louis SO much, but the one in Austin is just ok.

Anyway, if you want to check it out, tons of places have classes these days (I took it at my Y in St. Louis and at school here in Austin). Look for somebody who is certified... non-certified people could really mess you up. I'd try to describe the exercises, but it's hard, so I'll just say it works on your abs, thighs, and butt, and who doesn't want those to be a little smaller and more toned?

I'm such a Pilates shill.

I am also a Pilates fan. I have Pilates for Dummies and Windsor Pilates. I like it so much more than Yoga. It has helped me so much with my IBS -- but it doesn't make me feel like I have strange stuff going on... like yoga does. I can do it - get it done -- and I feel great. I always feel like I could conquer the world after I'm done. I don't feel worn out -- and I am getting stronger so fast -- and yet not bulkier at all. Pilates was designed originally to help ballet dancers get in shape. They don't want bulky dancers though - even though they need to be strong -- so this is the system they used. I am not very... disciplined in using it and it is still working wonders for me. I can do the different movements better each time and my body is getting more and more toned and strong.

I never thought I could accomplish so much in so little time. It feels so good too!

Thanks for the info on pilates. Do you use resistance, like huge rubber bands?

By the way, I was in Austin for the National Rowing Championships on Town Lake a few years back. I thought I was going to die from the heat! The coach made me stroke the boat, and every chance we had, all 8 rowers took off our hats and dunked them in the water, then put them back on -- trying to cool us off. While we won a bronze, I remain convinced we'd have done a lot better had it not been for that unbearable heat.

And those fire ants -- OMG!

BUT -- you do have some great bars down there!

Hi, "mom" --

Is pilates also aerobics? Or is it just stretching? You do it on the floor? Jumping up and down? (You can tell I haven't done aerobics in a long time, can't you?!)

"Pilates For Dummies"? Okay, this book is for ME , Girlfriend!

Jules, can you describe the pilates a little more? I'm really interested, but I can't do aerobics. I had all the cartilege surgically removed from my right knee after crushing it from running -- I can barely walk now without a lot of pain, so rowing is the only exercise I've found that works for me. How much impact is there with pilates? Do you test your heart rate as you work out? How long is the workout? I haven't seen anyone do this at the gym -- but all I ever do there is the rowing machine.

I'm really very interested. Thanks!
