I've been taking Lexapro for a good 6+ years and I feel like it's not been as effective for the past year or. Instead of increasing my dose from 10mg I'm thinking of switching meds. possibly to Serafem or Prozac - I think I may be suffering from PMDD as well as OCD....I have a Dr appt 3-3-09. Does anyone have an experience with either of these?

I'm on Lexapro, too. Have been on it for almost a year. It makes me extremely tired and am thinking of switching to a different med or trying something else. I've also gained weight on Lexapro.

Wishing you good luck. {{{hugs}}}

There have been a lot of people on these boards who have changed from some with good outcomes, and some with not so good.

I'm not of ADs myself... doctors have tried a few different ones over the years and they make me feel awful. They take away the IBS though! Too bad I get suicidal thoughts "don't give a crap" about anything, and that Lexapro and Wellbutrin make me feel like killing myself. Small stuff life that. Still looking for that miracle one. (*Sike*:... I'm never taking those chemical things again!!!) Sorry, got a chip on my shoulder there.

I've known a lady here called Sara-Sage who's ridden off into the sunset after marrying a fellow board member Tommy (yes, that happens!!!), but he remains a lurker who posts posts sporadically.

You could try doing a search for them or even reaching out to them by posting. Word has is it they're sometime lurkers, and Sara-sage loves her Celebrex.

Best of luck!

I was on Lexapro for about three months and could not tolerate it. My IBS-D became worse, my bladder nearly uncontrollable, and I was groggy most of the time. The anti-depressive properties seemed to work but this did not out weigh the side effects I was experiencing that reportedly effect 5% of patients.

My doc originally wrote a script for Zoloft but my insurance would not cover it, and it was over $100 a mos if I chose to pay for it myself. The second choice was Lexapro; it was $30 per mos with insurance coverage. I read about Fluoxetine, the generic Prozac, on this site and asked my doc about it, she said it was in the same family as Lexapro and would be easy to switch over to give it a try. The Fluoxetine is $10 per mos with my insurance. I am less groggy and the IBS-D has been more under control. I also feel like I can focus a little better.

I think you have to research and experiment to find one that works best for you. There are probably better ones, but I am happy with this one right now.

Some other brands are mentioned in articles like this:
The Use of Antidepressants in the Treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Other Functional GI Disorders http://www.med.unc.edu/medicine/fgidc/antidepressants.pdf

Good luck!
Karen

I loved what lexapro did for my IBS and anxiety but not what it did for my libido! After being on it a year and not wanting to sacrifice intmacy with my hubby I switched to Wellburtin. However.. I had to come off the lexapro VERY slowly! The withdrawl symptoms are awful if you do it too quickly(dizziness, nausea, feeling out of it)... I only took it once a day so I started doing just half a pill for a few weeks, then half a pill for a few weeks, then half a pill every other day and so on.. I also started taking the wellbutrin when I was down to half a pill. HTH!
