hey all,

up until i found this site a year or so ago, i naturally knew other people had IBS (as per the statistics), but i did not know of any of those people. i still do not personally know anybody with IBS that i am able to talk to about it regularly. i am 20 years old and in college. it is incredibly awkward. i am sure that everybody here has felt uncomfortable because of our condition, but being in college (dorms, roommates, dining halls, shared bathrooms, parties and drinking, etc. etc.) adds a whole other dimension to this condition. it gets increasingly harder and harder to explain why i can't eat what everybody around me eats, why i can't drink alcohol when everybody at college seems to, and so on and so forth. any other high school/college students out there who can identify?

Yeah, I'm graduating from college in a few days and I was diagnosed with IBS at the start of my freshman year. It's a rough patch for a while, but I had awesome friends who learned quickly what was a problem and what wasn't and would never comment if I had long absences from the table. Eventually, it developed into a bit of an in-joke and was something we could all laugh about.

If you need to explain to someone but don't want to go into detail, saying that you have "medical issues" is usually sufficient to satisfy curiosity. It's hard to start, but things do get easier as you go along.

And besides, alcohol isn't that good anyway :-)

Just tell them you have food allgeries. If there your true friends they will get it and understand. I would go to bars all the time and not drink I didn't miss it a bit, I really have never undrstood why they wanted to make there self sick when we can't control ares. You are really better off with out it. I just like being with my friends and dancing you don't need alchol to do that. Have fun and just be yourself. hth good luck
