Hi all,

So because I stupidly made omelets Monday night with expired egg beaters (and I'm talking wayyyy expired as in back in July ) I'm pretty positive that I have a bit of food poisoning. I wasn't sure, because on Tuesday morning I had an big D attack, and then hardly anything the rest of the day, mainly because I hardly ate anything. And then Wednesday I was having a bunch of loose bowels but no D. But then came today -- suffice to say it's a good thing I am quick on my feet because I had two attacks while at school (I'm a teacher). These attacks are a lot different than my usual IBS ones because right before hand I would have horrible cramping in my upper abdomen (IBS ones usually have lower abdomen cramping), almost like someone had stuck a knife in my naval, and then a matter of less than a minute to make it to the bathroom. I came home from work a bit early (I have an awesome boss) and proceeded to have 3 more attacks in the next 2 hours. So now I'm not sure what to do. I know if it is food poisoning, unfortunately the best thing to do is just wait it out and keep hydrated. I definitely don't plan on eating any solid foods anytime soon. However, how long should I stick to the liquid diet? A day? 2 days? This is my first experience with food poisoning and IBS at the same time, so I'm scared because I don't want it to mess with my IBS and undo any progress I've already made . Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Food poisoning (salmonella or e-coli) is very dramatic. You would be going at both ends with some violent explosive D and projectile vomiting at the same time if you had it. It usually is at its worst 8 hours after ingestion, then tapers off after a while over the course of a day or so.

Trust me, there's no such thing as "I think I might have gotten a wee touch of the food poisoning..." When you have it, there is no mistake.

Sounds like you got off easy with a little tolerable expired food. Take it easy for a while, and avoid the eggs!

I have to agree with Nellie, I got food poisoning Christmas Eve (from bad turkey). I woke up at 1:00 AM (had dinner around 5:30) with explosive D sitting on the can while hugging the trash can - How disappointing - I was so good and ate only potatos, dressing and turkey!!! All I could think about was DAMN, If I had known this was going to happen I would have been bad and eaten some cheese, salami, chocolate cake, ice cream, etc.
