Hi, I'm Sara in Wyoming and I'm new to the board.
I was curious if anyone knows of any information about Hormones having anything to do with IBS. I'm 29 and been on BC since I was about 17 or so. I was just curious if anyone has had any instances where Birth Control has caused their IBS symptoms to become worse than not on BC...

Hi Sara,
Absolutely. Hormones definitely play a role in IBS symptoms for many people. For myself, BC actually helps my symptoms quite a bit. This seems to generally be the case. But I have also heard from a few people who have said that BC makes their symptoms worse.
Welcome to the boards.

Definitely do a search on the boards - we've discussed this a lot. Lots of women with IBS are at their least stable around the time of their period or their week off the pill. I'm a lot more stable now that I'm not taking a week off (no more bleeding - yay!) and using NuvaRing (no more hormones in my GI system). But everyone is different, so seeing the full range of discussion is enlightening.

Hi Sara,
I took BC pills on 2 different occasions (about 1 year each time) and they made my IBS a lot worse. Personally I wouldn't recommend them to anyone, but with other women it helps them. Each person is different so what affects one doesn't necessarily affect another.

Thanks everyone for their input so far. I'll do a more extended search on the boards for more info but I seem to be less stable on the pill....never thought of it being because of hormones in the GI tract. I'll have to look around a bit and me and my Doc. will have to have a long conversation at my next appt.
Thanks again.
Sara
