I'll be having my right hip replaced on Monday, April 16. I could use all the well wishes and good thoughts any of y'all can offer.

I'll be released from the hospital on Thursday. If I'm doing well, I'll come home; if I'm a total klutz who hasn't learned how to use crutches yet, I'll go to rehab for a while.

After Sunday, I probably won't be back on-line until the end of May. I'll be on crutches for 6 weeks and since the bathroom is on one level of the house and the computer is on the other, I have to pick which one to hang out near. (Hint: It's not going to be the computer.)

Joe will be checking my email from time to time so feel free to drop me a note there and I'll get the message.

Oh Sand,

I'm sorry you have to go through this. I will be thinking of you. I will certainly miss your posts. Maybe you can convince your husband that you need a laptop now! A neighbor of ours had this done about 5 years ago. She put it off for years, not wanting to go through surgery, but she has been amazed at the results. I have even seen her out mowing her lawn. I don't know what your situation is, but I hope your results are as good.

Good luck to you Sand! My MIL has had both replaced in the past 5 years and she has done really well after both. Recovery time total was about 6 weeks for her. She is a woman in her early 50's and she was upset that she had to have it done but it really has been a blessing since she had such a hard time walking before they were replaced. I know things will go just fine and we will miss you while you are gone!

Thanks, lj. I'm actually looking forward to computer-free time. I'll miss the Boards, of course, and email but I won't miss all that time somehow disappearing into the Internet. And please don't tell my husband I'll be able to mow the lawn after surgery.

Thanks, Angela. I'm actually going to have to have the other one done, too - I'm sort of trying not to think about that right now. I'm in my early 50's, also. Maybe this is a new trend.

Thank you. Joe has already offered to wait on me hand and foot. When I told my orthopedist that he said, "Sounds like a good deal. Tell your husband I expect you to be back on your feet around 2010."

No, you didn't miss anything. I haven't been talking about this at all on the Board. Despite the fact that it's gotten harder and harder to even walk I've been telling myself it would get better. Now that I can't drive or get down the stairs to the basement I've pretty much had to give up that fantasy.

I feel much lighter of heart after posting about my surgery and getting encouragement here but I'm afraid I become a cross between an ostrich (head in the sand) and a turtle (withdrawn into shell) when I encounter problems. Not one of my more intelligent traits, I'm afraid.

Good luck! Hopefully you'll have a quick recovery. Just try to enjoy your time of mandatory rest. You don't get it very often

Good for you for getting this taken care of, Sand!

My grandma had hip problems in her mid-sixties that she did nothing about, because she figured she'd be dead before they got really bad. FIFTEEN YEARS LATER, right around when she turned eighty, she ended up having each hip replaced in two separate surgeries. Good for you for not waiting like she did!

I'm sure you'll recover beautifully and be so happy to get your quality of life back!

The surgery was a success and she is now back home recovering and going through physical therapy. Overall it sounds like it is going pretty well.

She still doesn't have access to a computer, so she is not reading the boards, but her husband is passing along emails to her if you'd like to take a minute to drop her a note.
