My 12 year old son, diagnosed IBS, cannot eat any wheat, dairy or sugar(refined or artificial). Would like to hear from someone with similar diet restrictions. How they manage the diet and what food substitutions they have found that work.
Any drinks? Teas are not appealing to a child...For sugar, the Madhava Agave Nectar is a life saver....That he can handle...

Hi, if you post on the Eating for IBS board above you will probably get more feedback. Most discussions here in the livingroom are non-ibs related topics.

For the dairy you can substitute soy, rice, or almond milk, I prefer Rice Dream, and Blue Diamond Almond Breeze milks. For a sugar substitute some people use stevia extract. I hope your son feels better soon.

I have used almond flour to make bread and desserts. I also use Stevia, which is an herb, not artificial sugar. I like it.

If you've found a sweetener that he can handle, I would stick with that. Stevia does work but it's not as "sweet" as sugar... no matter how much you use it's still seems like it needs more in my opinion.

Oat flour adds a good taste to baked goods as well. The soy milk can be hard to get used to, but if you use it mixed into stuff (or in cereal for example) it's tolerable.
