Thanks! I'll be sure to mention this to my doctor.

Another thing I hadn't heard of. I'll definitely research the antifungal diet to see what it entails.

You know, that is exactly what a woman at work said to me. She apparently went through that exact thing. It wasn't until she was referred to an alternative doctor who put her on an anticandida diet before she finally felt better. Lots of things for me to check with my doctor on!!! What a great forum! Everyone is so helpful! I've been humming & hahing about going to the doctor again. I personally would prefer to handle this with diet, but hopefully the doc & I (& help from this forum I'm sure) will be able to lick this with meds & diet. Cross your fingers!
Thanks again everyone who has responded to my pleas!

Jenny, I used a book written by Doug Kaufmann, a fungal researcher, called,"the Fungus Link". Google him and you will get more info as well as his site, knowthecause.com to order the book if you like. The book explains the etiology of fungus as well as the diet itself. I had UC for 13 years and am now symptom free, no meds!

Thanks for the advice everyone! I've finished my doctor's visit (for today). Now I go for a follow up visit on Friday (some of the test results). A chest x-ray & ab ultrasound on Monday and a (dread) colonoscopy at the end of the month. My doc hasn't given me anything yet - she's very good at waiting for actual test results rather than simply writing a prescription. Can anyone tell me what's with the chest x-ray? The only thing we've thought of was that it would be checking things out from the waist up. The good news was, thanks to Heather's eating tips & advice I've lost 12 lbs in the past few months. Yay!

Hey Jenny, I am in the same boat as you. On Dec 1st I developed a UTI/Prostrate infection and was put on Cipro for 30 days. Since then I have delevoped IBS symptoms. I have been told that a probiotic therapy might help. I have had this for three weeks and it is not going away though its been a week since stopping the Cipro. Any help would be appreciated.

As so many of us, I too am lactose intolerant; I can't touch dairy ANY time, not just after a course of antibiotics.
Actually, antibiotics are very difficult for me. I've tried them ALL, and found that Cipro was the only one my tummy can tolerate.
The worst attacks come on if I consume too many fats. It's truly the biggest trigger.
It's very confusing, I know. I used to tolerate dairy just fine; it wasn't that long ago that I consumed large quantities of cheese and my very fave, frozen yogurt -- YUM! -- but there's no way I could touch the stuff now. If you can tolerate soy products, that's been a Godsend for me -- soy butter, soy milk, soy cream cheese, soy cheddar, soy ice cream, even soy coffee creamer (Soy Coffeemate is AWESOME). When we go to Tino's pizza parlor, I pack my own soy mozzarella and give it to the waitress when I order my pizza.
Stay with the fiber, both soluble and insoluble; it's important. I'm a D, but I still have to have lotsa fiber, not only for my IBS but for my diverticulosis.
Good luck.

I always had a sensitive stomach, but my IBS problems began 6 years ago after I caught a bug that was going around camp, that landed me in the hospital. The doctors at the hospital gave me a load of antibiotics and then two weeks later I developed colitis. (My regualr doctor told me this was probably a result of the zillions of antibiotics I had taken) They cured my colitis with... yet more antibiotics but my stomach has never fully recoverd after that. I didn't start feeling better until I started this diet two years ago.

Joseph, Just to add my 2 cents worth...IBD, including colitis symptoms, has sometimes been caused from fungal poisons, one of them being antibiotics. What are your symptoms, by the way? I HIGHLY recommend the probiotics to put the good gut bacteria back in you. The antibiotics wiped it out! You could also take natural antifungals such as olive leaf extract or capryllic acid to speed the process of getting rid of the fungus. I had colitis for 8 years, on many drugs, and it wasn't 'til I followed an antifungal diet that I got well again, even when all my doctors told me changing my diet wouldn't make a difference....no drugs now, no symptoms. Cause/effect. Take care. Kim

My IBD-D was brought on by large doses of antibiotics I took when I was six and was treated for pneumonia. My symptoms began shortly before my 7th bday, pain starting 1/2 a hour after I started eating, severe pain while passing a bm, splitting gas pains, and fainting due to the ripping stomach cramps.
Antibiotics-related beginnings to IBS have been largely documented, and in my case I am sure it is true. I've often wanted to post pictures of myself before and post pneumonia. You can really tell from the photos the damage that was inflicted. Just looking at the pics, it is painfully obvious I'd been through a major life-changing event. You can really tell around high school, when I'd begun to adapt and change my eating habits to manage my IBS...
Good luck to you in your research.
