Here is the problem, Im 35 years old and have been waking up very moody for the past few years. At times my hands start to shake and I feel down and tired. A friend told me that it could be my thyroid and that I should have it checked out.

I am one not to go see doctors; fear of what they might say or just them not knowing what is wrong and spending money for nothing. I guess this came from doctors not knowing that I was suffering from IBS, and boy was that a dilema till one doctor finally said I had IBS but could not help me because he didnt know how do deal with it! Thank heavens for this website. So if anyone out there with a thyroid problem could please give me some info, I would really appreciate it.

The doctor will need to run some blood tests to check your thyroid levels. The tests are quick and they should get your blood work back fairly quickly.

Signs and symptoms of Hypothyroidism (under active thyroid gland);
A slow pulse and enlarged heart
An enlarged thyroid(goiter)unless prior removal of thyroid gland is the cause of hypothyroidism
Dry,cool skin that is puffy, pale and yellowish
White patches of skin where pigment is lost
Brittle nails and dry, brittle hair that tends to fall out excessively
swelling that does not retain an indentation, especially of the legs
Hoarseness and slwo speech with a thickened tongue
An expressionless face
Slow reflexes.
Patients with hypothyroidism complain of many different symptoms and each patient has unique complaints.Among the most common are:
Intolerance to cold
Tiredness and a need to sleep
Weakness
Pain and stiffness in the joints and muscles
Constipation
Increased Menstrual flow
Trouble hearing and ringing in the ears
Trouble seeing at night.
All these symptoms i have written down above came from the book "Thyroid for Dummies" by Alan Rubin M.D. I ordered this book off Amazon.com, it's a great informative book if you do find that you have thyroid issues.
I myself am Hypothyroid my most troublesome symptoms are:
Memory loss
Difficulty concentrating
Tiredness, but not to the point that i want to sleep all the time, just tired bodywise, like i am walking around trying to pull a heavy cart with a rope around my middle.
Puffy hands and eyes for me
Depression (especially bad during PMS time)
I hope you get some answers soon from your doctor.Keep us posted!
