I'm not explaining a disorder. I'm explaining a specific kind of self-help procedure, taught by qualified therapists, to stave off anxiety attacks.

Incidentally, antidepressants/anxiety meds have done nothing for my (mild) OCD. Figures, eh?

I'm a wreck, lots. Especially at work. I'm afraid of screwing up and getting fired (my bosses are firing happy - I've been asked back at least twice).
I get nervous driving out of the driveway, and until I'm two blocks away. I hate appts. I'm nervous I'll be late, or the dr won't show, etc. (Even hair appts!) Wish I had some words to comfort you, but sweetie, I'm a mess too!
I did find that taking drama in high school really helped me at least not be nervous in a crowd or in front of people as much!

I found Soy Nice soy yoghurt at the gs. It has the active cultures too. And it's not bad. See if you can find it (If you already haven't tried it) It's better than a risky milk product!

But soy scares me too! OMG I still have a carton of Rice Milk in my refrig that I, get this, bought over 4mths ago that I still haven't tried yet. My kids keep saying, "mom are ya ever gonna drink that milk stuff?" I'm such a wus when it comes to trying new things!!!
I think I must have read somewhere something negative about Soy too. Like does it give you gas or something?
See, sometimes reading too much is not good

I have GAD and I'm sure I'd benefit from the self-help procedure that you are trying to explain. It makes total sense to me how it would distract you from the other anxious issue. If you do find out the "technical name" I'd love to look into it. Just the little bit though that you've tried explaining might even help me as I am not anxious all the time. Just sometimes in certain situations.

Let me know if you find out what it's called.!

Do you mean in general, or about the IBS?

I don't get nervous every day about either. If I've had a bad run with the tummy, that will make me nervous, but I usually just pop an immodium if I feel that way.

Hi there,

I feel for ya, I know exactly how it is to feel nervous all the time. About 2 years ago, I would get so worked up about going out that I would literally be in tears when I was about to leave the house.. even if I was going out for my own birthday or something.
I went to a GI doc for everything and he put me on amitryptiline (sp). I used to be especially nervous on the bus. He put me on a super low dose, and after that I was gradually able to get out and about and on the bus. I would get a little nervous, but not like before.
Eventually, I went off the medication because I too hated being on it (even if I thought it was helping me, weird) and I was alright for a while.
When I got rid of other stresses in my life (changing my relationship with my mother, getting rid of a horrible "friend" I had, etc) my life did feel a lot.. lighter. I was also using the hypno CDs and felt they helped calm me down on the bus and stuff.
Recently, though, it has come back with avengence because I have three times recently been stuck on public transport, between stops, in the air (we have a sky train) and the last time I had a major anxiety attack and have been really nervous again since then. I am thinking of going back on the pills just to get back to good again, and try weaning off... But first I will try the hypno CDs again to avoid more medication.

So I guess the moral of my story is...
- First try to eliminate some external stresses that maybe you can do without (A friend that pressures you into going out when you don't feel up to it, a job that makes you feel anxious about using the bathroom, etc).
- Second, try alternative things other than meds like the hypno program or like you are doing with the accupucture and all that. That stuff takes a lot longer, though, so I would definitely try to be patient and wait it out.
- And third, if all else fails it might be that medication (at the lowest dose that still helps) is something that you need for a while.

I really hope you can start to feel better soon.. Especially because I have been so anxious lately, I really understand where you are coming from so I know it really sucks.
Good luck, let us know how your alternative therapies are going!

Steph

Sorry to hear you are going thru this. I only get this way during my monthly period for some reason?
I have a 10yr old daughter that is now on medication for her anxiety. It was the hardest thing for me to do,putting her on medication but i felt so helpless for her, she had worries and fears that a normal 10yr old shouldn't have. She vomitted real bad in her bed one evening and she would almost have panic attacks at bedtime every night since,so scared she was going to vomit again, she would start crying in the early afternoons just thinking about having to sleep in that bed again, she would just sob and tell me " i'm just so nervous!" it was horrible.I can only imagine how awful that must be to be nervous like that all the time?
