My husband has been searching for a job in his field since graduation from grad school 4 years ago. We are considering a move out of state (because he can't find a job in MI) and away from our families (which was difficult the first time we did that). Our student loans (which have been deferred due to income)are due in June and we can't pay the $600 extra a month on our incomes (we took retail jobs to survive in the interim), yet are struggling to find alternate employment. I have started job searching out of necessity although we had planned to make the next move for my husband since I had hoped to work only part time and start having children. (We've been married 5 years). I know I need to cope with the stress for my health, but feeling a bit discouraged (emotional rollercoaster). I have been sick with bad asthma attacks and respiratory infections since October, then two months of really intense IBS pain and attacks and feeling like I can't handle the stress load anymore. On top of it, my husband clams up about his feelings and thoughts because he is trying not to stress me out. Does anyone have any ideas on how to break into government jobs/homeland security/fbi or legislative aide, etc? I am trying to help my husband find employment and we have hit so many dead ends even with his degrees in history and political science and the networking he's been doing. I feel so stressed because I feel like the opportunities are slim, but I'm afraid of being unhappy moving away from our community of friends and family. Then, I think that really my family is more stress than support anyway and feel a move is necessary. Frustrated that we have masters degrees, good experience, and still can't pay our bills or find jobs that utilize our skills and education. Clearly, need to get this under control somehow to keep up my health (lost 15 lbs since holidays).
Any suggestions? Websites or organizations to check out? Job search advice? Thanks for listening!

My husband majored in Forensic Science and it took him 4 years just to find an internship. He finally found the internship and finished it the end of last year and he can hardly even get an interview now. And he's searching all over the country! It's very frustrating. I wish I could help you out but all I can say is hang in there. You guys will find something and if you're willing to relocate, it will make it easier to find a job. Good luck.

thanks for the kind words. some days it just feels good to have someone else say; been there and you get through it! i think the hardest thing for me is not being able to fix it for him and seeing him feel frustrated and depressed. trying to encourage him to talk to someone else since he's "protecting" me. thanks again for the support. good luck with the job search; it can be deflating and energy sucking. i wish you guys the best:)

I'm sorry you guys are struggling so much. I also live in MI and the job market here stinks. Luckily, my hubby is self employeed and I've been working for the same dr since I moved to this part of the state almost 8 years ago. Moving can be stressful but it can also be an adventure! I hope things work out soon! Hugs!

Thanks for listening. Yeah, the MI job market is not the greatest right now (in fact, it is I think in the top 5 worst economies in the U.S.). I am finding a few postings that I am excited about so keep your fingers crossed!
