Sadly, our large ash tree in the front of our house had to be cut down. However, it was a BIG tree and we left it the same height as the house. Its so big around, I can't get my arms around it! Will knows of a chain saw artist and we want to make the tree trunk into some type of totem poll! I'll try and remember to take a picture of the front of the house this weekend. We live on a fairly busy road and the house is old, built in 1922. Our driveway, which we are having paved in a couple of weeks, runs alongside the house. This tree is at the front corner of the house and driveway with a little flower bed and walkway.

We need suggestions on what design to have carved into the tree. Will is a musician and also repairs and modifies pro audio gear and wants to turn it into a big guitar! I said NO WAY!!!! I'm into flowers and fairies and dragonflies but I guess I can't expect Will to do anything too "girly" either. Then will mentioned something about a gargoyle. I might be ok with that, I'd have to see a design first I guess. Anyways, I know we have a few artists here so thought I'd see what other idea's I could come up with!

Talk to the gals in B.C. The natives there have an amazing history of beautiful totem poles. Most are faces. I love them!

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this yet, but in totem poles there are multiple layers with distinct things... could you have something related to music, something related to you, etc? I think you could pick a number of things and everyone could get what they want.

Thanks girls! What about the "hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil" monkeys? I thought that might be cute?

Ooh there are so many things you could do. The totem pole idea is neat with different things to represent both you and Will. I think the gargoyle idea is great too - or lions. If the tree is big enough you could get 2 to put by your driveway or front door. The first thing I was thinking is the beautiful bowls and stuff you could made out of it. And you are miss jewelry, get some beads made out of some of the wood and make a necklace (you can carry the tree with you always )

Take a picture and post it - I need inspiration!

You could have some combo of fairies and flowers and music notes and scales all sort of spiraling around each other. Or have the flowers take the place of the music notes on the scale. Oh, the possibilities.

Or you could pay tribute to IBS with an oversized model of a large intestine. Just kidding!! LOL!! Eww, that would be gross but definately a conversation piece. Let us know what you decide to do.

This may sound cheesy (I just finished a glass of wine), and I hope I don't offend, but are you still trying to become pregnant? Maybe find a something that symbolizes life and fertility, but not in an over-the-top fashion.

Here's a link to a bunch of symbols:

I like the hummingbird one and what it means, how there are two of them.

We see a lot of them up here, tree trunks carved into bears. They look great! I also saw one carved into a beaver, and it was so real-looking, I did a double-take. The trick is to find an extremely talented artist whose work you can examine closely before hiring him/her.

I don't think you could go wrong if you chose any kind of animal that's native to your area, something that will blend into the landscape and look like it belongs there.

Darn it! I forgot to take a picture this weekend!!! The tree is very big but we don't want to "up root" it and part of the roots go under the house and we are afraid of the damage it will cause. The tree is dead so we figured we would just let the roots disintegrate on there own and carve the trunk where it stands!
