Need advice - has anyone ever taken a smoking room in a hotel and managed it

like with OUST or Febreze or something, managed to be okay in there? I really really hate smoke as it gets my sinuses all a mess, but dh has planned a weekend at a lodge in the mountains and they just called to say they only have smoking rooms that weekend. I hate to see his plans go up in "smoke" (bad pun, I know!!!!!!!!!!!!) There are no other hotels near by, only a very scary bed and breakfast where we will NOT stay, the only other option would be to stay at a hotel in the nearest city which would sort of ruin the whole scheme of the weekend.

Hi Michelle, I've stayed in smoking rooms, but the stale smoke
smell didn't bother me, I also usually smoked a cigar in the
room myself<laugh>. Say, how can a B&B be scary?! Unless it's
haunted or run by Yankees or both. That's all I can think of.
Another solution to your problem is camp out! I'm sure the
kids would love it. It's probably warm enough down there now
too. -Bob

I am super super super sensitive to smoke (migraines, nausea) and this one highly depends on the hotel. Some of them do a very good job with deodorizing it -- the room has sort of this stale-air-freshener kinda scent, but the smoke smell is pretty much gone. Other hotels figure that if people know it's a smoking room than they won't mind the heavy pall of cigarette smoke that wallops you once you open the door. 
I guess I'd ask the hotel what they do to deodorize the room in between uses. The only rooms I've ever been able to stay in were the ones that they ozoned, and once I checked in I always asked them to come up and ozone it again. It's very unlikely that Oust/Febreze will help. If they don't do a good job of keeping the rooms deodorized, you're fighting years of smoke accumulation.
Can you reschedule for another weekend? I can't imagine a vacation would be much fun if one of the participants was miserable.

You know...the smoke gets in the bedspreads...pillows...carpet...so it isn't just in the air. I suppose taking a couple of good strong Yankee candles might help a little, or perhaps you could ask them to change out the sheets, pillows, bedspread etc. with those that have not been exposed to smoke. Surely they have extras!

A plain, unscented candle. It really helps to freshen the air. I find that the smell is most unpleasant when you first go in, but after, your nose somehow ignores it. I had to stay in one in Las Vegas while pregnant and I have allergies. I requested a room change because of allergies and they refused. I requested the room change because of pregnancy and they rolled out the red carpet for me and had me moved in 10 minutes. LOL
You can always request to be moved if one becomes available for health reasons. Maybe you'll get a sympathetic manager.

Yep, some hotels have air purifiers that they can put in the room for a few hours to clear the air.
But I have used scented candles before. Try a smoke-eater air spray!

Camping is what we'd wanted to do in the first place but the grounds aren't open until May 12 (blech!) So we've decided to make a go of it at the lodge. The lady said the rooms do NOT knock you over of smoke, this is the kind of place where people spend all day outside or up at the big lodge and only come to the room to sleep (there's not even TV's in the rooms) so I doubt a TON of smoking has gone on in the room. We have 3 super-duper air purifiers for the kids' rooms, so we're goign to bring them ALL plus a lot of plain unscented candles and some "oust". I think I'll be fine, thanks though. I'm just so tickled Eric arranged all this - even got the child care set up with our folks!

I have and I didnt think the smell was absolutely horrible where I could not breathe, but you can obviously tell it is a smoking room. Take some candles and some febrezze and you should be ok. Have a great weekend!
