and it's my potatoes! I put a bag of regular baking potatoes in the cabinet -- I thought I remembered hearing that you're supposed to keep them in a cool, dark place ... plus that was where I had room. Anyway they are sprouting like crazy. Is it still okay to eat them?

haha oh god thats happened to me too!

I usually just clip of the lovely new plants and eat them anyways.. and I've never had a problem. you're probably not supposed to but I figure what the heck.. I live alone like you and it takes me awhile to get through all those potatoes.

As long as you peel them and dig out the eyes, you should be OK -- I do it all the time. If they're green, chuck 'em. I think the sprouts themselves are poisonous -- but who the heck would eat sprouts off a potato??

Optimally, potatoes should be kept in a cool, dry place, like around 50 degrees. I wouldn't keep them in a kitchen cupboard.

As Jen said, I just peel them and dig the eyes out, and they're fine. But if they're getting soft, I toss them. There's something about mushy raw potatoes that just isn't appealing at all, heh.

I've cut up sprouted spuds before. Just skin 'em and cut 'em up into French fries, then bake 'em at 450 with a tiny bit of olive oil spread over the pan. Yum!

Hello Panda, at least you found them before they started to liquefy! Isn't it amazing how bad rotting vegies can smell, and yes i have a recent bad experience with spuds fresh in the memory!

The mere thought of that potato smell really takes me back!! Blech! I say chuck the whole blooming bunch and start over. But you're right, they probably won't kill you.

Hey Ralph! What have you been up to? It's nice to see your smiling face again.

You're gonna be a potato mommy!

That's a riot. I heard as long as you cut the eyes out(ooh, the windows to their potato souls) that you can still eat them.

Of course if they ahve a nice green fuzzy coat, run for the hills!
