Happy St. Patrick's Day! I'm looking for rainbows and leprechauns today 'cause I'm broke and could sure use that pot of gold. Oh, I'm sorry. I know that was so bad. LOL.

Don't tell anyone, but I have to wear orange, not green.

Anyone know why?

I'm not irish.. but I may go out for a few pints tonight to celebrate.. but then again maybe not.

I'm heading to NYC for half a week tomorrow to visit our own amandapanda and also need to prepare for that! I'll be sure to take some pics to share.

Orange is for the Irish Protestants of Northern Ireland.

Green is for the Irish Catholics of the rest of the isle.

Me, I'm 1/8 Irish Catholic, so green for me today.

Well, as far as I have been told, my mother's side of the family came from that part of Ireland where all the religious fighting has been going on for centuries. If there's anyone here from Ireland, perhaps they can shed better light on it than I; but I believe the Catholics are green and the Protestants are orange. I was always told to keep my orange-ness "under my belt," like it was something I should be ashamed of. Heck, I had nothing to do with no religious fighting!

Still, I don't wear orange -- OR green; I wear beige. Beige is nice and neutral, don'tcha think?

I was going to guess it was because you came out of retirement to work on a road crew...or go hunting...or you did something devious and had to go to the county "work farm."

But then Melissa had to go and be all logical!

The Protestants are represented by orange on the Irish flag, and the green represents the Catholics.

Uh, oh....guess I should be wearing orange too! But I don't own anything orange.

So what did everyone get up to on st.patricks day night?

we went to an irish pub and wore green. My mates drank guiness and we got free hats (i was on water....like usual) not one of us was irish. The dj yelled is there anyone whos irih tonight? there was one cheer! what gets me is why we celebrate st.patricks day more than we do st.gorges day (englands st!)
Anyway it was a good giggle, even though i had tummy cramps all night!

My nana's English, but dammit, you better call her Welsh, because her family was welsh. I get a kick out of that. Anyhow, there's Irish on her side, on my mom's parents' sides, and then even DH has some Irish in him.

but ONE irish person in a pub in the UK? You gotta be kidding me!!

Any clue when St. David's day is? I guess, being really much moreso Welsh, I should celebrate him!!LOL!

50% Irish, & if I try to get away without wearing green on St. Patricks day, my mom would shoot me (even though we're not Catholic). My brother, who's name is Patrick, gets gifts from people at his work, nice hu? My gandparents came from Ierland. One came in through New York, with $25, the other came in through California with $35. They met up somwhere in the state of Ohio. My Gradpa had a brouge, & the family used to have parties like every weekend, which they recorded. So my mom brings out those tapes evey St. Patrick's day, so she can hear her dad's voice again. It's kinda sweet, even though I never got to meet him. Just a little family history...

I missed this due to the bank holiday weekend. I, obviously, am Irish. I think one of my granny's granny's people were Scottish but it's a few generations back.

Protestants don't actually wear orange on St Patrick's Day over here though..orange is very much associated with the Loyalist political movement in Northern Ireland- they celebrate on July 12th and march all over Northern Ireland.

I had a very boring day. I made a traditional Irish dinner- bacon and turnip with boiled potato and we went to the cinema. Ireland played England in rugby on Saturday so we saved our drinking til then. (we won, and won the triple crown trophy so there were lots of celebrations)

I did wear green- my brother got me a really cute Shamrock Care Bear sweatshirt in Long Island a few years ago that is especially festive!

I promise to try harder next year!
