When traveling, do you eat on that day?

Since finding out I have IBS, I eat very light the day before we leave. On the morning we travel......I eat when we get to where we are going. Usually our travel time is about four hours. Better safe than sorry I say.

I eat on a normal schedule only more safely for a couple of days prior. And I take Immodium the night before I leave. Which, of course, you would only do if you have D. What type of IBS do your have?

You will probably get more responses if you post this in the "Eating For IBS Room". Most of us in the Living Room come to play and talk about "stuff".

until we get where we are going. Especially if it's in the morning. That's my worst IBS times. Then I'm usually ok for lunch and dinners.

My worst time is mornings too, but I find it's worse if I don't eat. Especially travelling by car, my stomach gets very uneasy if it's empty.

I find it best if I eat well the day before and morning of. I don't eat a full meal before leaving, more just like snacking on SF foods. If the trip is 4 hours I'd probably bring some arrowroot cookies and water to keep me going till we get there.

I usually eat something light and bring fruit. If I didn't eat, I'd be really crabby and no one would want to be around me, hah!

Sometimes I'll bring some pretzels to munch on. Sometimes a plain bagel will be fine too but it makes my anxiety ten times worse if I eat something. I worry that no matter what I eat will come out so it's just better to refrain for a few hrs then eat away when I get to my destination!

I eat safe for the day or two before I travel. I still eat the day of. If I don't, two things happen. I get really cranky and, if my stomach is too empty, I feel an attack coming on.

I accidently did that Christmas Eve. I'd eaten a late lunch, so I thought I would be fine because it's only about 2 hours to my husband's grandparents. Well, I was hungry by the time we got there at 8 or 9 PM, and there wasn't much I could eat. That's when I realized I'd left my survival kit at on the counter at home. Uh-oh. Luckily, they had some white bread. Best piece of white bread I've ever eaten!

For the trip, I have on hand my emergency/travel kit: toilet paper and Pepto Bismal liquid, fat free soda crackers, some apple sauce, a bottle or two of extra water, and a Luna bar or two. If I'm going away over night, I also bring my own oatmeal for breakfast.

In my purse, I always carry Phayzyme, Pepto Bismal tablets, Levsin, and Lactaid. I also usually have a bottle of water in the car.

Whenever I know I'm gonna be up against some kind of stressful event or situation, I don't eat. In fact, my friend's SIL has IBD, and when she got married -- in Hawaii, having flown her entire family AND FRIENDS over there -- can you imagine the stress?! -- she just didn't eat. Nothing before the wedding, and NOTHING DURING THE RECEPTION! Wow. That had to be tough, not eating when everyone else is, especially when you planned and paid for the meals!

But she made it through the ceremony and the reception with only slight rumblings. Not eating actually works!
