Does anyone here have a B12 deficiency from cutting out dairy and red meat from there diet? This is a new thing they are looking at for me because of my m/c and because my new lab work showed that my white blood count to be on the low side. I have read that people who are vegans have this more commonly. I am not vegan but do not eat red meat and dairy that contains alot of B12. I am currently taking a supplement but they tested to see of I was absorbinbg it. If I am not then I will have to give myself B12 shots. Just was looking for some input. I posted this on the Diet board also. Thanks
Just an added note for those of you who have been following my doc visits. My ANA (Lupus) panel) came back negative this time and so did additional screening from my OBGYN. I am currently going to see a high risk OBGYN, go to U of M for a rheumotlogist workup, and will see the Hematologist again in 4 weeks. My platlets also dropped down to 96,000 from 120,000. I have not been sick and with the white blood count lower she is monitoring my CBC panel for the next 3 weeks to see if these levels change at all. My red blood cells look fine no signs of cancer or anything. I swear the makeup of my body is crazy!!!!!!!!!

Congrats on the negative lupus test! I'm so glad you're getting tests and ruling out so many other factors of a possible cause! I am beginning B12 shots (self-adminstered, yikes) this weekend. The fibro clinic I went to took 30 vials of blood to retest me for everything I have already tested for and had results in the "normal" range. Their main philosophy of care is to get me in the narrower "optimal" range.
I had a B12 jab among other things on Monday, and I feel more alert now around 4pm when I usually would be conking out. I am presumedly in the low or low normal range for all vitamins and minerals considering I have avoided dairy and most fruits and vegs (unless they're green leafy vegs and boilled to within an inch of their life) for the last 15 years as they are major triggers to my IBS.
Good luck with your test results, and I hope you get the answers you need. Quality of life is something none of us should do without.

Not sure if mine is low or not but I've been taking the b vits for almost a year now and it does give me more energy! When you go to the U of M ask if they know of a reproductive immunologist in Mi. I've been trying to find one myself and they are hard to find but I'm thinking that who we both need to see!

Hi there I posted on the diet board about my daughter's ibs, but just cruising in here and saw your posts about Vit B12. I have had a problem with low B12 for 21 years since I was 21. The symptoms were, very very tired, could barely put one foot in front of the other and sore tummy all the time, not sharp but a low deep ache. Because of this, I have had the private specialist test Gabrielle to see if her levels are low. Any way, if you are low you need injections 2 or 3 times a week for a couple of weeks and then a maintenance dose. The Schillings test showed I had a malabsorption of B12 in the lower ileum, did not say what was causing it - I will need to find out. I had become severely deficient 4 or 5 times in 18 years but the last 3 and half years due to specialist suggestion, I have been receiving monthly B12 shots and will continue these for the rest of my life.
There are 3 out of 4 in my family (bros and sis) that are all on B12 shots, although I am the only one that has had the proper tests.
It is a very important vitamin. And in the beginning of my IBS I couldn't eat red meat, it just used to cause the most terrible cramps and diarrhea etc, it is at these times over the years as well that I have become deficient.
B12 is necessary for good brain working as well. You can feel the pick up from the injection within a couple of days, it really is amazing.

Pauline- Thank you for your response. I don't know for sure if I am low on B12 I am awaiting the test results. THe weird thing is I don't have any symptoms. I am not tired anymore than the average person who works 40 hours a week and takes care of a toddler. My hematologist is checking this because my white blood count is low. Again no sickness or virus from this. So right now I waiting to see what they come up with. THanks again.

Hi Angela, I was posting about B12 shots about two weeks ago when I got my first one - and lemme tell you - I need to buy a button that says I HEART my B12!!!! Any fear you have of needles will evaporate when you see the results of this shot! Before the shot, I was fatigued to the point of falling asleep while people were talking to me, falling asleep at work at my desk about 8 or 20 times a day and really, just not being able to functiont through the fatigue. The first week after the shot, besides continuing achiness from the inflamation in my intestines, I havn't felt better in years! The second week it did drop off alittle, but I'm doing okay now - my husband says I probably just feel like a normal person as opposed to my first week B12 high - but maybe I will become a B12 addict because that first week was GREAT! But next week I plan to see if taking a sublingual B12 again, so maybe that will carry me through the next 15 days to the next shot. I HEART my B12! I hope you have good results with it too - and don't worry, the shot is little and easy compared to others I've had! Min

Maybe that is what I need. I have been feeling so tired. My potassium was low, but that is where it should be now, but I am still tired ALL of the time. I just want to feel alive again.
