I learned today, there's nothing to make you appreciate your job like being on jury duty! I got off very easy, I sat in a room with about 400 people for the entire day without having my name called. We were told we would all be there minimum 2 days and probably 3, more if we were on a case. At the end of the day I was dismissed without ever being called for anything. I would happily be on a jury if I could have bathroom breaks whenever necessary, but since that isn't a possibility, I was stressing all day (my stomach is in knots) about having to explain ibs-d and panic attacks to the judge. Also I wasn't able to get a note from the doctor in time. Anyway, I'm pretty relieved to be out and going to work tomorrow! Dan

Whew! I feel your relief! That's good news. I was on jury duty a few years ago, but I was stable and not dealing with anxiety issues at the time. I don't think I could stand it now.

They called me in my 5th year of university - which would totally have screwed up my year. I got the dean to write me a letter and I handed it to the clerk and I was on my way. Wouldn't mind doing it later in life, though. Funny, it's supposed to be a random selection... but all 4 of my family members were called within a year and a half! Random indeed! My Mom was selected for a murder trial but got excused when my Dad had a heart attack.

See, now you appreciate your job! Interesting turn-about, ain't it?
I always wondered what I would do if called for jury duty. I served once, but that was pre-IBS. And even so, I was very careful then not to eat anything before the day's hearings and at lunch break, 'cause I knew......
Do you think you'd have spoken up to the judge, Hawkeye? I mean, when he asked if you had any reason why you could not serve? I'd have had to speak up. I'd have been extremely embarrassed, but I wouldn't have had any other choice. Just appearing before him would have torn up my tummy, so I know I couldn't have served. And I'm sure I would have had to take an entire box of Equalactin before showing up. Yikes!
Oh well, good thing it's over. And yes, now you appreciate your job. It's a very good thing.

Oh, I was ready to lay it all out, but I didn't have a note from my G.I. he actually was sick - and didn't write it in time. So, I was worried, this being NYC, that they'd say sure buddy thats very nice, now have a seat and shut up! Instead, I was very lucky to be ignored and sent on my way. As for the job, I'm considering several gentler transitions out of teaching at my school, such as getting a 3/4 time teaching job at a school that is more progressive and also is non-religious - We'll see.

As a teacher, even if I tell them I'm working summer school, they'll still make me serve it on one of my few weeks off!
Funny. It's my hubby's birthday today, and he got a jury summons in the mail--the first one in the 8.5 years since he graduated college! "Happy birthday, Honey!" LOL

It's kind of funny, when I was living in Illinois, I got a jury duty notice despite not being a US citizen. I ended up having to send in a photocopy of my passport to prove that I wasn't a citizen. Didn't end up serving the time, needless to say.

I got called once for it & was not so fortunate. My name was called within 15 min of the first day! I ended up on the Jury. And of course, had a bathroom issue. The Judge wan't paying attention to the time, & I really had to go, so I raised my hand in the middle of a testimony & the baliff had to cough to get the judge's attention, he asked what the problem was & I said, I need to use the bathroom. I think the whole courtroom was relieved. The recorder came up & thanked me, as she also had to use the bathroom! What an expreience!

I've only been called once and I was also worried. It turned out just fine, we sat in a romm for about an hour and they went over some stuff then they called names and I wasn't one of them so I got to leave after less than 2 hours!

Hawkeye,
Glad you got off. Jury Duty is one of my worst fears. I am like Bev and just going before the judge would make me so nervous my stomach would be a mess. I hope that I am never faced with the problem.
