MY GI doctor says that I need to take Paxil because he belives that stress and anxiety is adding to the IBS. This just creates confusion for me. I just want coping skills and a way to deal with the symptoms. any suggestions

a LOT of us here take some sort of anti-depressant. Check out the library section for more info on how it helps our ibs. Also, try doing a search for antidepressants on the eating board as there have been many discussions on which ones people take. I've never personally tried Paxil but I'm currently on Zoloft. Just remember that it takes several weeks for the full effects of the drug to really be noticed and you might have a couple of bad days in the beginning while adjusting to it.

I would try something besides paxil. I have known a lot of people who really don't like paxil. My husband had the hardest time getting off the stuff. And he had major withdrawls if he ever missed a pill.
I would try something else....also do you feel that you need something? I wouldn't just get on pills cause your DR thinks it's something you need. DR's are pushing drugs so MUCH these days. Do lot's of research on this subject....before you subject your body to any pills.
If you feel that you need something then I would look into a bunch of pills before you settle on one.
Good luck!

It's a very difficult drug to get off of. I tried it once, and could not tolerate the side effects at all. Horrible. My friend was put on this, and when she came off, she suffered horribly.
But, everyone is different, as we all know. Bob like this AD. I think it's all a guessing game as to what AD the doctors choose to put you on is some ways. I mean, if you were a C, hopefully they wouldn't put you on an AD that increased C! But other than that...who knows how they choose except through trial and errow. I have tried about 8 different ADs now! Still really haven't found one that I can tolerate or that works.
