I know that I could e-mail you on this but perhaps the post will encourage others to try knitting!

After several attempts at dish cloths and that awful acrylic yarn (I refuse to work with that stuff), my daughter and I picked up some cotton yarn at Hobby Lobby (not going to the yarn shop until I take the class, too much temptation to go hog wild buying yarn!) and have started her scarf. I have about 7" done and though my stitches aren't totally even, my daughter thinks the scarf looks great!

I am hooked! I will take pictures when I finish it...she picked a pretty variagated yarn. I tried to put it down while we were watching a movie this evening, I lasted about 10 minutes and had to pick it up again!

Mags...how long have you been knitting and how succesful have you been?

Bevrs...about how long did it take you to make the pretty baby blanket you sent me a picture of?

I am SOOOO jazzed for you! I think this is super! You're an inspiration for all of us.

You bet I want a pic of that scarf! Oh yeah! What brand is the yarn? What's the gauge? Is it 100% cotton, or a blend? What size needles? Are you gonna do a fringe on the ends?

How long did it take me to knit up Barbie's granddaughter's baby blanket? Gee, not long. You see, it's all knit, no purl, and they're squares, no increasing or decreasing, so it was a snap to do. I just knit one square a night while watching TV. Lets see, each square was 8 inches, and I think I did 6 rows and 5 across, so that would be 30 squares? No, it seems I did 48 squares? Damn, I can't remember. But that's one square a night, so if it was 30 squares, that was 30 nights; 48 squares, 48 nights. I didn't really concentrate on how long it took, because there wasn't any hurry on it. It was just a fun project. Actually, if anything, crocheting the squares together was the worst part -- but you know me and finishing! I did it myself, instead of sending it up to my friend in Canada, but that's the last one I'll do myself!

Girl, I'm so proud of you. Really, you picked this up all by yourself and tackled it and mastered it in no time. I especially like the fact that you turned your nose up at acrylic -- oh yeah, you're another KNITTING GODDESS! (And you're hooked, baby! )

I think knitting with acrylic is like knitting with sandpaper. YUK.

I will send you the particulars in the yarn later...I can't get to it without waking someone up. I think the yarn brand is BERNAT, it is for baby blankets. I used 10.5 needles. Rest later!

Many hugs...

I ONLY use acrylic yarn that is high qualitya dn that for certain things.. mostly I work in cotton or occasionally wool- cheap acrylic makes just cheap finished products! and I've been knitting/crocheting on and off for more then 25 years!

Ahh, another person hooked!

You know what? The stitches not being totally even is a GOOD thing. Hand-knit items almost never have "flawless" stitching - I realized recently that it's what makes an item *look* handknit, and it's a beautiful thing.

Here's another couple yarn thoughts....

Acrylic yarn has its uses. It's absolutely the best stuff for baby items, because it stands up to a lot of washing and it's very hard to stain. It's also good for big items like blankets/afghans, where you could easily drop $300 for a single project if you were using wool. Avoid the Red Heart stuff - it's absolutely awful. I've had good luck working with Caron Simply Soft; it's a little fuzzy, a little shiny, and it feels absolutely divine in a finished object.

Pure wool yarn makes AWESOME washcloths! Hear me out on this one! Buy pure wool that isn't "superwash"; as you use it, it will felt up and get softer and softer. Plus, it doesn't mildew, which is nice.

Our only "local" yarn store (it was actually about 80 miles away) went out of business, and it's probably a good thing - talk about being a kid in a candy store! LOL!!

I am really curious about this whole knitting thing now. Is it hard?? Is it something I can learn on my own??

That would be a huge accomplishment if I could ever knit a sweater or even just a blanket. Okay, how 'bout a pot-holder to start!?! LOL!!!

Honestly, I used to crochet and it was the biggest stress buster.

It's my 3-week abstinence from smoking anniversary and maybe this knitting thing would be a great replacement hobby.

Thanks for the continuing inspiration.

Wal-Mart has a "teach me to knit kit" in their craft section that comes with an easy to understand book and two sets of needles. The instructions are simple and the diagrams are good. You will make a $10.00 investment in the kit and then buy yarn...

I have crocheted for years and cross-stitched as well...I have never tried knitting until a couple of weeks ago and with Bev as a cheerleader, you can't help but fall in love with knitting!

Michelle, anything you WANT to do you CAN do. PB WANTED to knit, so she just picked up some needles and yarn and DID IT. You can too, provided you have the DESIRE. It can be frustrating when you drop stitches and don't know it or when you see that your work isn't even. But that all comes in time. You just have to have a little patience with yourself and realize you're gonna make mistakes.

I've been knitting for 43 years now; I don't think I could watch TV without needles in my hands. I wouldn't know how!

By the way, knitting is a great device to help lose weight. You can't put stuff in your mouth with hands full of yarn.....

I can't knit worth a darn. I keep losing stitches, and you really have to watch what you're doing.
I love crocheting - if you screw up, you just rip it up and go again. I've done some really wickedly hard patterns that have turned out beautiful. I'm the afghan queen! Anyone gets married, I give them an afghan.

I started...messed up...went arrgghhh...started....messed up....went argghh....whined to Bev and asked for advice...started and so forth .

I finally got tired of starting...messing up and decided I was going to do it right, do it well and quit messing up. I can only hope to be near as good as Bev one day! I will try to post a picture of my "project" tomorrow...

I LOVE knitting...there is a crochet kit at Wal-Mart too.

Thanks for the info! I was just at Walmart and it was sooo busy, I just left. I was feeling crappy, my husband called mee and came home early from work and had already picked up what I needed to get. Knitting/crochet are great weight loss tools--you cannot put anything in your mouth. It's also a great chainsmoking replacement hobby. Indeed, I am grieving for my executed tyrannical habit. The reign of smoke is over, and now after getting high on clean air, she crochets afgans and knits sweaters for her future hypo-allergenic abyssinian cat.

You're a genius. Knitting. No wonder you're so deep,Bev. All that knitting puts you in touch with the great spirit.
Julia Roberts is so right. I used to make afgans & scarves and well...I'm sure my fingers half remember how.

I knit and crochet as well, but I'm FAR better at crochet than knitting. Crocheting is easier, faster, and only requires one tool...all the better for me!

Also, being vegan, I don't do the wool thing. I don't mind acrylics either. I just go for color and price.

Heh, I stopped in at Yarn Forward last week and spent $20 I didn't have on three TINY, MINISCULE skeins of lash yarn. It's simply devine but oh-so-hard to work with. If it wasn't so expensive and so pretty, I'd be tempted to not use it at all.

I'm starting to expand a little. Basically, I can only make things that involve squares, rectangles, or simple dec./inc., because it's simple. I can't grasp crocheting in the round. It's my everest, it seems. I get so lost in the stitches! Arg! Someday, I plan on making a blanket out of squares. Each square will be a different color, size, gauge...whatever. I don't care if the edges of the blanket aren't straight. I'm starting it this summer, whee!

I love crochet, it's great to do while watching tv or movies...my only problem is that I have yet to find a way to do it while reading books.

WOW! I can't believe how FAST you are! Girl, you whipped this up in NO TIME! Didn't you just get that cotton yarn day before yesterday? Holy Toledo! I'm very impressed.

This is the Bernat you were talking about, eh? Yeah, it's good yarn. Your daughter is gonna LOVE this sweater! But it definitely needs fringe on the ends. Fringe is fun to make; you just tie each strand around the stitches on the first row (but it's better if you crochet the edges first). Hey, why not ask your daughter to help you? It would be great fun for her.

Ya know something? I'll tell ya a little secret. Remember that sweater I knit -- my first project? Well, truth be told, when my first fiance was alive, back in 1960, 3 years before the sweater project, I attempted to knit him a scarf. It really was my very first project. When he died, I threw out the scarf. I hadn't finished it; I only had about this much done, same as you. But my point is: it wasn't NEARLY as good as yours. Not even close. I had dropped stitches and uneven stitches -- oh, it was a mess!

Girlfriend, you ROCK!

Bevvy

P.S.: Remember, next time you start a new skein of yarn, pull the yarn from the INSIDE of the skein, not the outside. That way, the skein doesn't bounce all around as you knit.

Crochet uses just one "needle" with a hook on the end and you pull loops of yarn through it. The yarn doesn't stay on the needle like it does in knitting.

You really have to know how to crochet for knitting projects that require edging, such as blankets. The borders need a crocheted edge to finish them off nicely.

I'm not a big fan of crochet, but I learned it anyway out of necessity. The afghans I make all have a crocheted edge; the lady who finishes my work for me does the crocheted edges. It looks real nice and gives "support" to the project.

I can see that my tension is somewhat uneven and being anal retentive I just have to ask...

Where exactly is the source of the tension? Is it when you are wrapping the yarn around the needle or is it when you move the loop from one needle to the next?

Beth...are you going to start knitting with us?

There could be a lot of reasons for uneven stitches. Your tension can change from one stitch to the next, depending upon something as simple as your hand suddenly beginning to perspire and sticking to the yarn. The source of the tension can be both wrapping the yarn around the needle AND OR moving the loop from one needle to the next.

You need to relax, first and foremost. Don't expect too much of yourself with your first project. Puh-Leeze! You should have seen my first project! Oy.

Next, you need to learn how to hold your yarn. I posted pix sometime back of how I hold it; I assume you saw them. (They've since been deleted.) The real "tension-controller" for me, believe it or not, is my little pinkie. It's the first thing the yarn "hits" before it comes up through my hand and onto the needle. That "hit" controls the tension. Also, beginners always knit far down on their needles. It's not necessary and is a total time-waster. You work on the very edges of the needles only. That will help control your tension.

When I'm stitching merrily along, and get distracted when Ricky Martin appears on the TV, then suddenly look down at my knitting and discover an uneven stitch, well, I just take it all out and re-do it. With Ricky Martin, it's sooooo worth it!

You can see the big stitches versus the little ones. Just take out the stitches back to the big one and re-do that part of the row. It's no biggie. You're not in any hurry. Remember, this is supposed to be fun.

Also remember, the more you do it, the more your stitches will become consistent. It's almost mechanical after awhile. You can FEEL when your stitches are off. You know when your hand becomes sweaty. You know when the yarn falls off that little pinky.

Like I said, don't be so hard on yourself. Take it easy and enjoy it. Someone said they actually like the look of uneven stitches. Okay, so that wouldn't be me, but hey, I'm an old-fashion kinda gal.

Oh, and BTW, if you crochet all the edges, that will make the edges look more even.

Okay? You feelin' better? Now get back to that scarf!

The scarf is 45" long and different widths here and there because of that darn tension issue (Bev...I do remember the picture you posted and hold mine similarly)!
The binding off felt very akward but I am sure that will change in time....are you ready? Drum roll please........

Over the next few days I will crochet a yellow border around the edge and do a green and yellow fringe. I think I will call this the Bevvy-scarf! I couldn't have done it without my favorite cheerleader!

The border can wait until tomorrow...I am pooped!

Always great to find other knitters out there. I am really impressed by the color within that skein. I can't wait too see it all finished.

I completely agree about avoiding the acrylics. I just got some cashmere that I am knitting for the lining for my mittens. I am using 3 strands on size 2 double points. This is so faboulously soft that I can't wait until they are done.

I picked up a bunch of Christmas red and holly green cotton yarns to make stocking for next year. I can't wait to start those.

Looks great. Don't worry about the tension during the first piece. When I made my first scarf it was definitely not even and looked pretty mangled. Once I got comfortable with the stiches it didn't take long before the tension just worked out fine and looked great.

The one thing that I did learn from my class was to complete the row before setting it down to make sure that it stays even for that row. I didn't listen at first to my instructor when I started my afgan and that got me in to trouble when I actually got confused about where I was and started using the wrong row and actually reversed the pattern. Still trying to figure out how I am going to do that again so the afgan ends the same way I started it and looks like that was the plan.

You have a point there! We get below 100 degrees at least once or twice a year. My daughter can use it until she is 87 and it will still look brand new I am sure!

I'll send you one when I get as good as Bev...I will probably be 87 myself!

Bevers, I picked up my size 8 needles and started a dishcloth for grins just to see if I would be happier with my stitches and I am.

The Bernat yarn is much softer than what I am using for my dishcloth and that makes a difference too. I love that Bernat yarn...I am dreading going to the yarn shop because I will really be a lost cause then!

Sailing away....cashmere? WOW....

I didn't realize there were so many people interested in knitting. I love it!

Sweetie, I'm really glad you're playing with the different size needles to see the different results you get. Good stuff. However, I don't think that yarn is suitable for dishcloths. Remember, it's gotta hold up under a lot of abuse. That yarn's much more suitable to sweaters or something that's not constantly under water, scrubbing things.

Lion Brand makes a "Kitchen Cotton" -- in fact, that pattern I sent you calls for it -- because it's really STURDY.

I'm being anal retentive, aren't I? Sorry.

I agree. Cashmere! WOWWWWW! Nice stuff! I've never knit with it; can't afford it. Never made mittens either; tough things to make. I don't think my hands could hold all those double-pointed needles, let alone figure out which ones to use, and when.

On the other HAND (ouch; that one hurt), it sounds like a challenge. Hmmmmm........

Ain't this knitting stuff FUN?!

Hey! When is your first knitting class?

I am using something similar to Lion Brand. They don't have Lion Brand where I picked this up...it too is made specifically for dishcloths.

I appreciate anal retentive...I don't know that they come to much more anal than I do though I wish someone would come up with a sexier word for that!

Knitting is a total blast...I am hooked. The class schedule hasn't come out yet. It should be e-mailed to me this week. This place has a stitch-n-#&$*) every third Thursday of the month. I think myself and two friends are going to all go together if we can get our schedules to gee-haw!

OK...it's past my bedtime! Nighty...night!

When I get better I would love to make one for you! My New Years gift to myself is a series of knitting classes that I can take about 20 minutes from my house.

My daughter will be 13 years old in August and I have dreams of making her an afghan...with even stitches! Ha ha.
I have crochet most of my life but I will say that I prefer knitting. It relaxes me....I can't wait to get better at it.

Take a look at the kit...I found mine in Wal-Mart. All you need is the kit and some yarn. I am an anti-acrylic snob. I don't like the way it feels!

I just read this entire thread top to bottom.

Bev was gonna teach me how to knit about a year ago. And I bought the yarn and such.

(No knitting kit though!)

And I gave up pretty early on.

I am now saving up to buy a kit and to try again. (I'll just need a digital camera to send pics to know if I'm doing stuff correctly...hmm...that could be a challenge!! I'll have to figure something out!)

Anyway...you are all so inspiring and so committed and just so awesome!

i truly love being part of this creative and talented bunch!

*hugs*

Thanks for sharing this (and for starting the thread Rachel!!)

I can only do it if I get to

a)bug everyone to death with my questions

b)get a lot of support

As a kid I was told I was lazy a lot. That I wasn't trying. i have SEVEN LD's, ADD, not to mention bipolar meds that are sapping my memory. I truly am at a disadvantage for things like this.

I am unsure I can do it without the digital cam cause I wouldn't be very good at describing what's going on with my stitiches...the way I'm holding the needles...etc.

But I want to be able to do this!

You are the most supportive people in my life (other than hubby)....so I shouldn't be shy here nor should I be concerned that you will think any less of me or dodge my questions. But doing something like knitting brings back all my childhood/adolescent "lazy, careless", etc.

I think I should try it! It will give my self esteem such a tremendous boost if I stick it out and just go for it! Esp. with such supportive ppl!

*takes deep breaths*

Ok. Ok! This is something I want to do! Now I just have to find last year's yarn and needles and when I make next week's major WalMart shopping trip...get that knitting (or crocheting) kit!

I need lots of hugs, please (scared)

I do better with a "live" person showing me. Where did you find a class? The park disctrict or a yarn shop or something? My community college doesn't offer it.

I used size 10.5 needles for Ashley's scarf and I think that is what made the tension seem so "off". So I changed needles sizes to see if I would be happier with my work.

"for grins" means..."for kicks"..."for the heck of it"...it might be a southern term or one I just made up myself. I have no idea.

You really are a Motherly figure here. Your advice is second to none in my opinion. Had to forego the rowing machine for new tires on hubby's car. Winter driving is NOT meant for old, worn down tires here. I have a peace of mind he's got good traction. Oh well, so much for the rowing machine, treadmill, gym membership, etc.
Maybe the weather will hold and I can start walking.

Bevrs- I will scan my mitten patterns and send them to you. I have two really great patterns. On that you can do on regular needles and then a big bulky mitten that is done on double points- I can do a pair of these in a day since they use size 15 needles.

The cashmere yarn isn't too bad from the yarn shop that I "haunt." They have 100g, about 82 yards, skeins for $12.95 up to $22.95 available. I have been using the cheaper priced yarn just for the mittens since I found that cheaper stuff to actually be nicer that the more expensive even with using multiple strands. Course with my hands always being cold that was another reason to the go with the nice soft lining. I am thinking of doing another set of liners since I will have enough to do that and putting inside felted mitten. Not sure if I really ready to move towards felting...but working on getting my confidence up for tackling that project.

Send questions...I have probably asked them numerous times myself of my instructors who have had a lot of patience. I get quite a few questions from the girls at work wanting hints on what to do to repair mistakes (dropped stitches mostly or having to take out a row or more and then get it back on the needle).

I think you will find it relaxing.

I wouldn't tackle mittens if my life depended on it! Yikes! That's just WORK, Girl! Nothin' but WORK!

I certainly admire your drive, not to mention how much you spend! $22.95 for one skein? YIKES! No, I'll stick to my little cotton yarn, thankyouverymuch. I wait 'till it goes on sale, then I feel lucky if I can get it for $8/skein.

I took classes through a local craft shops. Another place is to check some of the church groups that do knitting circles. They often work on projects for Project Preemies (hats, booties and blankets for preemies at the local hospitals) and other charities mitten/scarf drives. I know that one night a week a bunch of people get together at Barnes and Noble in the cafe area and knit. They share tips, patterns and encouragement.

My daughter picked the yarn out since the scarf is hers. She loves it and helped a bit...she cut some of the fringe. She is going to take a class with me in a few weeks. What a cool mother/daughter day we will have!

I crocheted a green edge on one end and then used two strands of green yarn and one yellow on that side for the fringe and did the opposite on the other side with yellow yarn bring the primary.

Knitting is not as difficult as I thought it would be though I am looking forward to taking classes and improving.

Bevrs...not sure what you said that got me interested in knitting but I am so glad you said it! You are the greatest cheerleader of all time!

Here it is (and it wasn't me): The Inspiration

Girl, you were just READY, that's all. You wanted it, and you went for it. Note it was less than a MONTH ago! In just a matter of a few weeks, look what you've done. And you did it with virtually no help from anyone. I'm actually a little afraid of what you'll have done before next Christmas. I'll bet everyone on your gift list will get an afghan.... !

You're AWESOME, Girlfriend!
