I know that I could e-mail you on this but perhaps the post will encourage others to try knitting!

After several attempts at dish cloths and that awful acrylic yarn (I refuse to work with that stuff), my daughter and I picked up some cotton yarn at Hobby Lobby (not going to the yarn shop until I take the class, too much temptation to go hog wild buying yarn!) and have started her scarf. I have about 7" done and though my stitches aren't totally even, my daughter thinks the scarf looks great!

I am hooked! I will take pictures when I finish it...she picked a pretty variagated yarn. I tried to put it down while we were watching a movie this evening, I lasted about 10 minutes and had to pick it up again!

Mags...how long have you been knitting and how succesful have you been?

Bevrs...about how long did it take you to make the pretty baby blanket you sent me a picture of?

I am SOOOO jazzed for you! I think this is super! You're an inspiration for all of us.

You bet I want a pic of that scarf! Oh yeah! What brand is the yarn? What's the gauge? Is it 100% cotton, or a blend? What size needles? Are you gonna do a fringe on the ends?

How long did it take me to knit up Barbie's granddaughter's baby blanket? Gee, not long. You see, it's all knit, no purl, and they're squares, no increasing or decreasing, so it was a snap to do. I just knit one square a night while watching TV. Lets see, each square was 8 inches, and I think I did 6 rows and 5 across, so that would be 30 squares? No, it seems I did 48 squares? Damn, I can't remember. But that's one square a night, so if it was 30 squares, that was 30 nights; 48 squares, 48 nights. I didn't really concentrate on how long it took, because there wasn't any hurry on it. It was just a fun project. Actually, if anything, crocheting the squares together was the worst part -- but you know me and finishing! I did it myself, instead of sending it up to my friend in Canada, but that's the last one I'll do myself!

Girl, I'm so proud of you. Really, you picked this up all by yourself and tackled it and mastered it in no time. I especially like the fact that you turned your nose up at acrylic -- oh yeah, you're another KNITTING GODDESS! (And you're hooked, baby! )

I think knitting with acrylic is like knitting with sandpaper. YUK.

I will send you the particulars in the yarn later...I can't get to it without waking someone up. I think the yarn brand is BERNAT, it is for baby blankets. I used 10.5 needles. Rest later!

Many hugs...

I ONLY use acrylic yarn that is high qualitya dn that for certain things.. mostly I work in cotton or occasionally wool- cheap acrylic makes just cheap finished products! and I've been knitting/crocheting on and off for more then 25 years!

Ahh, another person hooked!

You know what? The stitches not being totally even is a GOOD thing. Hand-knit items almost never have "flawless" stitching - I realized recently that it's what makes an item *look* handknit, and it's a beautiful thing.

Here's another couple yarn thoughts....

Acrylic yarn has its uses. It's absolutely the best stuff for baby items, because it stands up to a lot of washing and it's very hard to stain. It's also good for big items like blankets/afghans, where you could easily drop $300 for a single project if you were using wool. Avoid the Red Heart stuff - it's absolutely awful. I've had good luck working with Caron Simply Soft; it's a little fuzzy, a little shiny, and it feels absolutely divine in a finished object.

Pure wool yarn makes AWESOME washcloths! Hear me out on this one! Buy pure wool that isn't "superwash"; as you use it, it will felt up and get softer and softer. Plus, it doesn't mildew, which is nice.

Our only "local" yarn store (it was actually about 80 miles away) went out of business, and it's probably a good thing - talk about being a kid in a candy store! LOL!!

I am really curious about this whole knitting thing now. Is it hard?? Is it something I can learn on my own??

That would be a huge accomplishment if I could ever knit a sweater or even just a blanket. Okay, how 'bout a pot-holder to start!?! LOL!!!

Honestly, I used to crochet and it was the biggest stress buster.

It's my 3-week abstinence from smoking anniversary and maybe this knitting thing would be a great replacement hobby.

Thanks for the continuing inspiration.

Kate.

Wal-Mart has a "teach me to knit kit" in their craft section that comes with an easy to understand book and two sets of needles. The instructions are simple and the diagrams are good. You will make a $10.00 investment in the kit and then buy yarn...

I have crocheted for years and cross-stitched as well...I have never tried knitting until a couple of weeks ago and with Bev as a cheerleader, you can't help but fall in love with knitting!

Michelle, anything you WANT to do you CAN do. PB WANTED to knit, so she just picked up some needles and yarn and DID IT. You can too, provided you have the DESIRE. It can be frustrating when you drop stitches and don't know it or when you see that your work isn't even. But that all comes in time. You just have to have a little patience with yourself and realize you're gonna make mistakes.

I've been knitting for 43 years now; I don't think I could watch TV without needles in my hands. I wouldn't know how!

By the way, knitting is a great device to help lose weight. You can't put stuff in your mouth with hands full of yarn.....

I'm going to Walmart, anyway, once this attack subsides to finish christmas shopping so I will pick one up. I have to get a hobby besides this computer. It's giving me headaches being on it all day.

Thanks for your support girls!

And KATE, let's go get us a kit and start knitting!!! Come on girl! Do it with me!!??! You need a hobby too since you quit smoking!!
