Well NY just got scr3wed by the Transport Workers Union. They have shut the city down. Management is not off the hook either but they have been the ones to have budged off their original stances. So, NY is held hostage and now we just have to wait and see. I made it in but I am not happy.

I was thinking about you this morning, Tommy. Along with the other New Yorkers on the site.
How the heck did you make it to work?
What a lovely holiday gift the Union is giving you all! Bah Humbug!

Ack, that stinks! I'm not up on world happenings right now so wasn't aware of this at all. I can't imagine living in a city where you depend on city transport and than to not have that city transport. How are people supposed to get around??

Wow! I have a friend that is leaving to come to NYC on Thursday thru Christmas. I just told her and she is flipping out since they have never been to NYC. They have a friend there they are staying with. I would imagine that she will have a hard time getting a cab from the airport? Any suggestions for her Tommy if they don't settle this?

yeah, it's superfun. i'm lucky in that my office is letting us all work from home - i could make the walk in probably a little under an hour, but the wind chills are *crazy* - they say that tomorrow morning it'll be able to give you frostbite in half an hour. i'm still planning on walking across the city tonight (67th & 1st to 44th & 10th)... not sure if i'm walking home or taking a cab. if it's possible to even get a cab.

Hi Tommy! So crappy! I hope for all of your sakes that they work it out soon! I can't immagine where a strike like that would put DC! I thought I remembered reading though that NY subway ran on a surplus. Does it? DC subway runs consistently on deficits and I know our fairs are higher than yours. I think more people ride in NY though - meaning that things are probably all the more crummy for everyone trying to get to work - and more importantly back home - today! I'll be thinking about you when I see news on this! Mindy
PS - to add my support - glad you stuck around on the boards - I'd have missed you!

There is a surplus but there will be substantial deficits in the years to come. These deficits can be attributed to high pension and healthcare costs. Pension and healthcare costs are a main reason why US auto makers and airlines are going bankrupt.
Thanks for the kind words Mindy. I don't think I could ever leave the boards since this is where I found the love of my life!

She should be able to get a cab. What time will she be getting into the airport? I am actually flying Friday morning to go see Tina. I already have my cab reservation for 6am on Friday. But, I think she should be ok but she should anticipate a long line for a cab and heavy traffic if she is staying in Manhattan.

Ugh, what a nightmare to get back home tonight. I thought there was going to be a riot at Penn Station. People were yelling, cursing, screaming to get into Penn. I was very lucky. I got in before the police decided not to let anyone in. I actually got hom by 6pm. I am very thankful and thanked God when I got to my train stop here in Queens. Ugh, I don't think I can do this for prolonged period of time though...

You poor thing! I can't believe what I saw on the news-- so many unhappy, cold people who are not getting anything out of this but a major backache! They mentioned that cars in the city had to have at least 4 people in them-- YIKES!
I'm glad you made it home safely. I'll be thinking of you tomorrow at rush hour.

Today was nto so bad but I think people's patience is wearing thin. I actually think I may take tomorrow off. I already have Friday off. I will say one thing, if you're claustrophobic, a NY Transit Strike would not be good for you!
Thank you all for your well wishes. I will be ok. I am tough little NYer!!!

I am just so tired of being held hostage by these people who get to retire at 55, don't pay for healthcare and make $55K with no college education. They are a disgrace to the city. I also heard that 900 of the union crossed the picket line. A small number, considering it is 34,00 strong, but a start.

I saw some of it last night & this morning on the news. THAT is nuts. My thoughts are w/ you. I just don't understand how people who just want better wages & stuff can't get it. It's amazing how stubborn people are to hold on to money, they'll throw a city into chaos over it. Hang in there, someone's got to give in on this. Be careful out there...

Want better wages, they get to retire at 55 with healthcare and a pension. Before overtime they make on average $55,000 a year. I am sorry but I have no sympathy. Pensions where no one has to pay is bankrupting the auto industry and will bankrupt municipalities. This is why the state has taken a hard line with the union. To boot, the strike is illegal so the union is wrong either way.
Sorry, I am just venting, it has nothing to do with you but if someone gets hurt out there as a result of the strike, it is on the union's hands. Plus, things are just horrible for us NYers, Just horrible.

I have no sympathy for them, AT ALL!

and your right- these overcompensated people walked.. watch what happens when they remove a lot of that and offer non union people the jobs at less pay and less benefits and they take them.. and oh! the city gets back on its feet and they are left in the cold! I just hope it happens- I've seen it happen in a few other industries over the years....

So I heard on the news today that the average MTA worker salary is higher than that of the average NYC police officer...WOW!
Tommy - I hope the union pays dearly for this - and not the great city you live in!

Mindy, oh yea, they do awfully well in terms of compensation.
BUT, on the good news front, there seems to be some VERY hopeful signs and developments this morning. I hope a deal will be announced today. But, I will believe it when I see it!

Tommy's probably already left work to battle the commute home, so I thought I'd post the good news ...
The strikers went back to work! Everything is supposed to be normal by midnight tonight. They haven't come to an agreement on the contract but I think the strikers got the message that their strike was illegaly and costly for both them and the city, and that the MTA would not negotiate with law-breaking strikers. Hoorah!

Yes, I am psyched. I actually took off today. I just had enough and I really wanted to be well-rested for my flight tomorrow morning. I had told my Dad and a few people that I didn't think this would go into Christmas because if it did then it would have def. dragged on until just before New Year's. I am glad the union did the right thing and came back. This is a great early Christmas gift. Hooray for New York!
