that yesterday's discussion was really not worth leaving the boards. I thought long and hard about it and there are plenty of people here that I enjoy posting with and hearing about. I never left because I was too "sensitive" or whatever. Trust me I don't run from anything or anyone. But sometimes, it is best just to leave somehting alone. As for my problem lately with the boards, well, I just tend to get frustrated when I see people ganged up on or someone condemning someone (and it doesn't have to be someone on the boards just in general) because what they did does not match their so-called "value" or "belief" system. Things like that just annoy me. So, when I see those types of posts, I am just going to stay away from the debates and leave my opnion to myself.

So, to those of you who care, I will be posting here and there. To those of you who don't care, well, if you didn't care you wouldn't be reading this post, now would you?

I would really miss you if you stopped posting! Simon (hubby) will probably start posting a bit, so maybe you and Shane won't be the ONLY guys in the Living Room (as Bob tends to stick to EFI).

Anyway, I care and I'm very glad to hear you're staying. Plus we need to hear both sides of the first helpforibs marriage!

I hope you realize that when I said what I thought about that whole mess, I never meant that anyone who thought differently was wrong or had bad values!! Really, truly. I'm glad you're not leaving. And I hope you don't ever feel condemned. Frankly, it's nice to hear a guys side of things once in a while.

I'm so glad you thought long and hard about it Tommy! Kinda knew you wouldn't stay away

There has to be more men on the boards! Too many women can get.......well you know......we need someone like you to break it up with your opinions which are male based! I think you should be able to speak as a man...uh hello??? that's what you are! Please don't feel out of place because the women overpower this board. I read most of all the posts kinda after the fact and I don't think you were wrong at all in giving your opinion as a man. In fact I totally agreed with what you said and was not offended AT ALL.

BIG HUGS Tommy for coming back!!!!

Thanks Linz, that was really nice of you to say. You know, I forgot that Shane occassionally posts every now and then. It would be cool if Simon hopped on the boards occasionally...

As for each side of the first helpforibs marriage, well, I doubt we would be posting a whoe lot of private stuff, but other stuff we will...

I'd hate to have you leave the boards. I enjoy hanging out with you online!!

I've often thought of using an alter ego to post stuff so I wouldn't get beaten on. Just in case you're wondering, I learned this from someone here I MET, who uses her alter ego to post potentially controversial topics. So SEE someone's doing it already.

I agree with everything that has already been said. Just glad to have a member of the family "home" again!

Oh, and I don't think you should ever be leery about posting any opinion you might have. We all have to learn that everyone has their own way of seeing things. Doesn't make one right and one wrong...just different.

I have sort of skimmed a bit of this latest flurry, and think you are right. We all have to just avoid what we know are going to be controversial issues sometimes. Especially when we know that a difference in opinion won't change anything - only cause strife. That is just the world we live in.

tommy...
first i feel bad that there was such a craziness over my post...but i want to say...having male points of view helps me...because alot of times us women can jump the gun..or read something a man would read different, thats what makes men and women different...well along with other stuff..lol..

i myself wasn't discusted by it all as much as i felt betrayed by my fiance...he said howard sterne had mentioned the website, so he checked it out...as a woman, i think howard sterne is funny...because he pushes the envolope..and the adults on his show make their own desicions (i wont watch the show however...lol...not with mike anyway) i'm hoping that whole thing doesn't get blown out like crazy, my point to the whole thing is....

I honestly would appreciate a male's prespective on things my fiance does sometimes, i got mad at him one time because his sister-in-law (sorta...brother-in-law's sister..so not really anything to mike) got a boob job, and mike kept talking about it, one reason i think is because she is only like 20..and that her boyfriend's mom bought them for her...really whacky....anyway...i'm not blessed by any means in that area....(but they run in my family..where the heck was i??) anyway...i was upset, because he was talking about it, and i talked to a co-worker, who was a guy about it, and he totally gave me a different prepective, and totallly changed my attitude on how i precieved it...i even tried to argue with my co-worker about it..and he was like "lyndsey, you are beautiful, and he is lucky to have you, he's saying it, because it's on his mind, and i'm sure doensn't care about her, just the topic is crazy" so i said "but i don't have them!" he goes "he is totally crazy about you, so don't worry, guys don't think of it like the way you women do" and i stopped and thought about it...and thought i may be blowing out of porportion..and indeed i may have been...because when mike came into see me one time at work (i work a red robin) the guy i was talking to came up to me and said "oh my god, that guy hella wants you, thats crazy" i said "thats my boyfriend" so i was glad he was picking that up!! haha...

ok..so tommy..and any other guys...and gals, i appreciate any help for ibs, not for ibs....that betters us..not angers us, etc...i find the knowlege here helpful, and adds wisdom for me

anyway, again, i am sorry for the anger that everyone had. i was upset, but obviously hit a hot button for alot of people!! so sorry about that!!

take care guys and gals!!!!

I know someone is using two different user names on the Diet Board - and answering herself sometimes - and it really bugs me. I realize I don't totally get the etiquette of Bulletin Boards, but having two identities seems to me to be a breach of some type of trust. Am I just too old-fashioned on this topic? ("So twentieth-century" as a friend of mine said recently?)

On a lighter note, my husband's theory is that there are actually only about 5 people on the whole Board, all with multiple handles.

Honestly, I think it is disingenuous to post under two different names and then answer yourself. But, that is just my opinion.

You have to wonder, do those people who have several handles have arguments between the various handles? Pretty strange, eh?

First, I'm glad you're staying. I didn't read whatever the latest brouhaha was, but I've always found you very level-headed and good at expressing your opinion without trashing anyone else or anyone else's opinion. Valuable qualities, both.

Second, while I was thinking about people leaving the Boards, my husband was putting together broken quotes for his puzzles Board. One of the quotes he used was:

Quote:

You can leave in a taxi. If you can't get a taxi, you can leave in a huff. If that's too soon, you can leave in a minute and a huff. (Duck Soup)

Cuz I'm not that smart!.... Must be a computer whiz, cuz it took me forever to figure out how to post (under one name) on this board.

If I wanted to pull that off, I'd have to call my son in college and get him to help his Mom figure it out.

Also, I'd never be able to keep that straight! Answering myself under a different name? Geez! I'd have to write notes all over my desk to remind myself who's saying what to whom....and then I'd lose the post-it-notes!

I don't have a problem or complaint in the way you mean. That is, this isn't something I wanted dealt with by a moderator or by Heather. It bothered me but, frankly, I thought everyone knew this was going on and just didn't mention it out of politeness or some kind of Board etiquette or something. It never occurred to me I'd be giving people news. When Nelly brought up multiple handles, I thought it would be a good chance to discuss the issue in general and see how people feel about it. I'd still really like for that discussion to take place - multiple handles is a big deal for me. I'd be a lot more comfortable if I had never figured out what was going on.

What I regret and apologize for is my flippant comment about someone answering herself. I feel now like that came out as callous and led to the issue of multiple handles getting sidetracked into sort of poking fun which is absolutely NOT what I wanted and what I'm glad you interrupted. What I DID want was some open discussion about the whole idea of posting under multiple names so I could understand how other people felt about it and maybe that would help me deal with how I felt about it.

So to me, this isn't a moderator or Heather issue - the people posting under multiple handles aren't doing anything "wrong". I saw it as a community issue - how do we all feel about this, what does it mean for how the Boards function (if anything), does anyone besides me really care? That kind of thing.

One last thing. Now that I realize this isn't common knowledge, I'm not going to name names. I feel bad enough about not being careful in my wording - I'm not going to compound the problem by outing anybody.

I don't understand the purpose of someone having a multiple handle. Why in the heck would anyone want to pretend to be more than one person----or answer their own post?

Kind of like the girl in high school who used to send herself a dozen roses on Valentine's Day---in order to make everyone think she was more popular than she was!

It seems very deceiving to me. I thought I was corresponding with genuine people, and now you're telling me they're not who they appear to be.

I must be really naive.

The rest of this post!

Ok...I think I see the problem now! Concern that with a double handle...folks can vote twice.

I still think this is something that SHOULD be brought to someone's attention with authority to do something about it! If you would like to vote on doubl handles...let Heather know how you feel! Perhaps she will make a poll on the subject!

Again, this topic has potential to become a debate in which some folks might get quite upset and wish to leave. So...if we have an issue like this...my feeling is that it shouldn't be debated like this as some people might get too upset.

I would hate for people to leave over this!

And I can vouch for Tina, Nelly and Dalia. I am sorry, I don't see what is offensive about talking about multiple topics. I won't be apoligizing for anything I wrote. It is completely deceiving to be writing posts and then responding to yourself. This topic should be discussed. What if a genuine person asked for advice, then a person with two handles answered in two different ways? I don't think that would be appropriate.

Just my two cents...

....as I understand that alot of people do have issues with the embarrassing topics that come up on here and might not want people to know that they have certain problems and so use a different handle for that. BUT replying to the same topic under different names does feel like deception to me and is rather against the open and trusting nature of this forum (which is neccesary in the first place for people to be able to open up about their IBS).

I don't think there's any need for this topic to get out of hand in anyway. It might just give the people in question a chance to see what other people's views are about it!

Unless they have a different IP. So don't worry about that.

Looks like people think this concept is a bad one. It's actually the solution one person came to regarding posting to polerizing threads, so she wouldn't out herself if she wanted to defend someone who was being unfairly maligned. I applaud her decision because it's easier to be attacked on a personal basis if it's actually just your persona-de-plume who's being attacked-- When no knows exactly who you are it's easier to stand up for somebody your friends are slamming.

These are the tendency of the boards sometimes, and that's just normal when a group of people get together.

If anyone wants to send me a personal message regarding this, I'll gladly answer your questions-- except those regarding who this friend is, because I'm not rewarding confidence with betrayal.

Oh yeah, and there's just one of me.

Nelly, I gotta ask a D.C. question. I was born there and raised in Arlington. My grandmother lived in a real skuzzy apartment building behind Walter Reed Army Hospital, and I spent a lot of time there. However, I haven't been back since around 1959. What's it like there now?

When I see pix of downtown D.C., where I walked the streets with my grandfather so much, I don't recognize anything.

Do you remember Woodward & Lothrop? It was a very old-fashion department store with about 8 floors, and my grandmother used to take me up to the English tea room for lunch. The store has long been out of business, but I wondered what happened to the building. Do you know?

LOL you guys are funny...

Well ok it ISN'T ME (lol) but I have definitely seen people do this on other boards... one reason is for confidentiality sometimse (i.e. posting embarassing topics - but in which case you wouldn't need to be replying to your own threads...) Sometimes people just do it to be jerks and flame people under other usernames, though I don't think that's the case here.

Often it's so they can do this:

post a topic
reply to the topic under a different username
thereby bumping the topic to the top, starting a conversation, making it more likely to get replies (in theory)

I don't really see the point though Seems like just a lot of effort for nothing!

OK sorry didn't mean to drag this on or anything. I'm finished! (And so is my alter ego juuuust kidding! lol)

as T'Pol said to Sarek. If I've met Anne, I can vouch for the fact that she's a real person. I cannot, however, vouch for the fact that Anne is not also posting as Betty, Carol, and Darlene. If I've met Anne and Betty, I can vouch for the fact that they're real people and for the facts that Anne is not also posting as Betty nor Betty as Anne. I cannot, however, vouch for the fact that Anne is not also posting as Carol and Darlene.

Slicing and dicing the Board into met and unmet isn't going to narrow things down. Although getting a summary of who has met whom is kind of an interesting parlor game - sort of a variation of the whole six degrees thing.

That whole part of Georgia Ave. is pretty seedy. They're supposed to be closing the hospital, but I know soldiers are still being evacuated to there. I'm not sure what they have planned for the area, but DC and PG county have been undergoing a regentrification project, so there might be some other housing/beautification projects in the works.

The only part of GA Ave that's undergone any overhaul is thearea by the courthouse on Cameroon St. which is home to the new AFI Silver Theater. But it's only the 3 blocks or so around the Silver Spring Metro-- great if you're a tourist or live right exactly there, but kinda uot in nowhere for the rest of us.

I didn't know you were an Arlington gal! I was born in DC too at George Washington University Hospital, and we lived on Mass ave until we moved to the Montgomery County suburbs in 1975, the year Grosvenor Metro on the red line opened up! 495 is still a parking lot, though 270 has gone from a 4-lane highway to a 12-lane super highway-plus-technology corridor.

Woodies! Of course! There was one in Montgomery Mall too, where I used to go with my mom as a kid. The building you're talking about remained as is for a while after the merchandise moved out. It looks like it was vacant for the better part of a decade before the Swedish chain H&M moved in.

Man, I haven't thought about Woodies in a while!

Gee, Nelly, what a shame to hear that my grandma's place is "seedy." I remember putting on my roller skates and skating all around that apartment complex by myself. I was so lonely, but there were no other kids to play with. I used to play hopscotch on the sidewalk in front of that ugly apartment building, by myself....

.... sigh ....

Yes, I was born in Garfield Hospital in 1944. It burned down.

I left D.C. before the metro ever opened up. Hard to imagine how it is now.

What is H&M? They occupy Woody's old building? Did they do any renovations to the OUTSIDE? Gosh, that was a beautiful old building. I used to love to ride the old wooden elevators. There was always a little lady with white gloves sitting inside on a little stool and would ask as we walked into the elevator, "What floor please?" I looked up at her with such admiration; I always wanted to be an elevator operator lady when I was grown....

..... how stupid was I?!

My grandmother took me to Woodies all the time. I loved to ride the elevator. It was a cage-like device, and the little lady with the white gloves would close the cage door with a huge crank. She'd always smile down at me. I liked it.

Once my mother came shopping with us but let go of my hand. I wandered all over the store and had a wonderful time, ending up in the front cage where all the nice ladies with headphones on their heads sat in front of a huge switchboard. I went from one lap to another; it was fun. I told them my name and they used their headphones to speak very loudly over a microphone kind of thing throughout the store, saying my name. It was cool.

Then my mother and grandmother came, and my mother grabbed me off a nice lady's knee. I looked up at her and said, "You got losted." She was not amused.

Woodies was a fun place.

That building was absolutely beautiful. I remember when they took off the original cursive writing that spelled out the store's name to replace it with the bubbly script that was the new logo. I was very unhappy that they were "updating" the look because I loved the swirl on the "W"...

When I was in Liverpool in March we went shopping at the mall, and they still had a cage elevator and man in a hat and uniform (with gold tassels, excellent!! ) who asked us "floor, ladies?" I reacted like a squeeling tourist, I'm sorry to say. I could have ridden that elevator allll daay.

I loved switchboard operators! They were so helpful! I used to try to talk like the ones from the '50's movies, with the American accents and telltale nasel twang I only got to experience on TV. I can't imagine anyone really talked like that, but I thought it was so cool and efficient.

After reading all the posts about multiple handles, I realize there are a couple of good reasons for posting under an alter ego, but I still cannot stomach the duplicity of it. However, I think there's a way we can all have our cake and eat it, too.

Here's my suggestion: If you want to post under an alter ego, say that you're doing so and explain why. That way you preserve your anonymity while I (and anyone else who cares) can make an informed decision about whether to respond to your post.

As an IBS-related bonus, I've got to think being up-front about it would decrease anxiety and thereby ease IBS symptoms. I know that if I were posting under an alias, I'd be so anxious about getting found out that I'd never get out of the bathroom and would have to invest in a wireless connection in order to keep posting. (Okay, icky visual, but you get my drift.)

Thanks to everyone who chimed in on this- it's really helped me sort out how I feel about it.

Yes, and when we take ourselves out of the phone book we'll keep our name there and just not have a phone number listed. And have a brief explanation next to our name detailing to our stalker why we've decided to keep our number private.

The stalker thing is a kind of extreme example. I think we are all pretty level-headed here and aren't going to be blowing up at others.

I know exactly what Sand was referring to in her initial statement, and though I'd wanted to respond to it, I didn't because by the time I got back to the boards the subject was kind of being squashed. And I'm not going to say anything about that specific example, but I do totally agree with Sand that this kind of multiple handle thing bothers me.

On the other hand -- I generally try to avoid posting personal stuff that relates to other people in my life. My family and husband know about these boards and I would never want to post anything that would hurt them. So, if I was absolutely desperate for advice but it involved revealing more private information than I was comfortable sharing, I could totally see creating another handle and posting under that. Especially if the situation was one where I was afraid that everyone would hate me afterwards. Like if I was posting on advice for how much rat poison do you really think it would take to kill someone. And I wouldn't want to reveal that I was someone who posted, because then everyone would try to guess who it really was, and maybe someone would be right. And then what would be the point of my anonymity? So, in cases like that, I would have to be on the side of the anonymous user.

However, if you're just talking on the diet board, or discussing stuff that's a wee bit controversial, I do agree that you should be using your own user account, or at least explaining why you aren't posting under your own. That does make me uncomfortable. And once people do figure out who you really are (and they probably will, if you post enough for them to learn your linguistic patterns), they're probably going to think way less of you than if you had just said what you really wanted in the first place.

You should take it up with the people who are doing it. Maybe start a new thread that's all your own to address the subject. Or go out and meet some people and ask them yourself.

But since I don't think this has anything to do with Tommy's post, I'll just trail off...

I don't follow this at all, Nelly. I don't understand how being up front would offend anyone; I don't know what stalkers have to do with any of this; and I can't make your phone book analogy match up with what I'm suggesting - although I did go through some enjoyable mental gymnastics fiddling with concepts like unlisted numbers, second lines, cloned cell phones, caller ID, and my personal favorite, throw-away drug-dealer cell phones.

It sounds like you feel that Tommy's good news about continuing to post has somehow been "hijacked" by the discussion on multiple handles. Threads drift all the time and this one has been drifting for days. In fact, considering that the thread has touched on elevator ladies and switchboard operators, I'd say we've gone beyond drift and gotten heavily into wander. And besides the fact that it's late to be objecting, why should someone have to start a new thread to respond to an ongoing discussion?

If you're suggesting that Board members who haven't physically met other Board members shouldn't be commenting on certain matters, I disagree. This is an Internet Board and, although I think it's really neat some people here have met each other, I don't think it's a requirement for full participation. If that's not what you're suggesting, then I simply don't understand your point.

No matter what the reason someone has for posting under more than one name... I don't think it is any of my business. My primary reason here, although I haven't been able to do much of it lately, is to help and get help regarding IBS issues. If someone needs IBS help, who cares if they are posting under 5 different names?
If it is a Living Room thing, then I can't see why it would bother me either.

For the record, I am only one person here and there are people on the boards who have met me and can vouch for me. I personally wouldn't choose to post as someone else, but I am surely not about to judge someone who does.

I don't know why everyone on the boards can't just leave well enough alone sometimes. We have to pounce on everything that comes along, and then have a big drama about people leaving and coming back, or deciding not to come back afterall.
I have been offline for a little while because of things happening in my real life and truth be told, I feel like sometimes asking for support here may end up blowing up in my face. This being said, while I was first again PMing because of what people were saying about cliques and things but if it could take a chunk out of the drama and cast more attention on helping people with their actual IBS-RELATED problems, maybe that wouldn't be such a bad thing.

I've always said the wonderful thing about communicating online is the delete key. I can write something, read it back, realise it's not appropriate and delete it. I do this in eMails, conversations with friends, and on these boards as well. I think it is so unecessary for things to get out of hand the way they do here.

Personally, no topic brought up here would bother me. I am happy to talk to anyone about anything, but I understand some people aren't. I think if we can all just learn to try and respect each other and not be so quick to judge and jump all over someone, we would be much more peaceful community.

Failing that, the Living Room is a nice place to come, but once again it is not the reason the boards were created. I can't help but sigh when people make posts about leaving because it means they are leaving the Living Room, but why leave the Diet board? Just because someone makes a post over here that you don't agree with and get into an argument about, doesn't mean there aren't a lot of people looking for answers and support on the other boards. I hope that people can keep this in mind in the future. I think the Holidays are especially a good time to look at what we are doing for other people, and see how much more we could be doing and it is such a small thing.

I personally have respect for every single person on this board, and I think it is a real shame the way these things keep cropping up. Hopefully, we can all learn some tolerance for one another and get back to what a support group is really about.

Your friend,
Steph

I hope you are doing okay and that the job is working out...and I miss hearing about what's going on in your life. You had some pretty big things going on and I worry about you so much. I just want you to be happy and for things to work out for you however is going to be best for you.

*hugs*

OK, I'll direct a response at you: I dunno, what role does anonymity play anyway? These are not anonymous forums the last time I checked. So go do your own thing if posting openly is what you want. Be my guest.

This is astonishingly hurtful, Nelly.
