This is a long story but quite interesting I swear.
I was driving home from work one day when I saw a sign for a graphics company that said "LOGO'S". Well the apostrophe drove me nuts and so I called them as I drove by to tell them that since they printed business cards and all that they should have their sign correct and remove the apostrophe. Long story short the guy offered me a job! I went for an interview today and it is really something. He wants my job to be some proofreading and writing (he even wants me to write a children's book!) and the rest sales on commission with gas paid for. He wants me to make a proposal of what I want and how much I want to be paid and I don't know where to start! I need to know how much to ask for stuff. I don't even know how much proofing there will be. I was looking through their books and there was a lot of mistakes in their sample work and I told him I need to go through all of their stuff before the final printing! But the sales would be 15% commission once I got going. He is into Trump and his philosophies and will start my commission at 35% to make me feel good and drop it to 15% where it will stay. The sales will be going to businesses to get them to use us for their graphics needs such as logos, business cards, brochures, etc. I really need to know how much in store work I will be doing. Does anyone have advice on how to make this proposal? He says he pays well. The other thing is the store is messy and not run as business-like as I would like. I think they should improve.

Do you need a job? Are you looking for one? Is this something you are really interested in, or are you just flattered by it all?

I would check out this company before signing on the dotted line. I took a job like this once, only to discover that the company was in the red with every creditor in town; pretty soon my paychecks started bouncing. Luckily I got another job before my rent was due. When I left, they told me they weren't sorry to see ME go, just sorry to see me taking my COFFEE POT with me! Nice, eh?

On the other hand, if this job sounds like something you really could sink your teeth into, and you feel there is a future there for you, then, if the store is messy and "not run as business-like as you would like," perhaps you can fix all that! It sounds like you would have the opportunity to show what you can do, and maybe that might include hiring someone to organize the office better? Why not find out before you accept the position?

I'd do a little research if it were me.

Good luck!

Bev

Ya know what? I say go for it! That website reminded me of my very favorite job -- I had a LOT of 'em! -- back in 1963. I got a job offer at a commercial art agency in Washington, D.C. It was a just a little hole-in-the-wall, and the pay wasn't much, but damn if I didn't have a BLAST working there! We were the ones who designed "Mr. Zip" for the U.S. Post Office (it was before the days of Zip codes, and Mr. Zip introduced them to everyone). Those artists LOVED me, and I had so much fun with them (all MEN!). Yeah, it was great. Girl, you're young and beautiful, and what the hell -- just GOFERIT!

If it doesn't work out, there are other jobs. When you get to be my age, that's when you can start worrying about not being able to find one. Right now, ENJOY! Sometimes we can be so cautious that we end up with ZIP.

GOFERIT.

I'm from the old school. But I'd also go for the benefits. Medical and dental are a MUST! Also, a 401K may not seem important at your age, but trust me -- that 401K that the company gave me 40 years ago is really paying me back NOW; that's my retirement!

If you go for hourly, then you only have to worry about the time you put in, not how many pieces you can spit out.

And shoot high. You can always come down if necessary. Trust in yourself; no one else will.

Good luck!

I do freelance proofreading and copy editing. I get around £11/hour for basic proofreading, £15-£20/hour for copy editing and £20/hour for content editing.

I don't know what this is in dollars, but I hope it helps!!!

Hey Tam!
That sounds like all my daydreams. I get so upset at misplaced apostrophes. Have you read "Eats Shoots & Leaves" by Lynn Truss? It's hilarious.
My interest would definitely be piqued too. Bev brings up good points about making sure they are in good standing. I think you should either call the BBB or ask the company if they can provide you with their latest balance sheet, or some sort of statement of financial good standing. I know you've been getting jerked around in your present job, so this seems like pretty good timing. If they check out okay, I think you should go for it.

I spent the afternoon working on my proposal. I called a bunch of other graphics stores of all levels to see what they recommend for wages. One in Minneapolis said nothing under $50 but they got very confusing about details. Another nice lady said they pay $89 an hour! I was blown away. Another guy I talked to said to look at a MN website and the jobs there on average were $18-23 including writing. I was suprised writing didn't average higher than $25. Anyway I don't know whether I should aim for $20 or $25. I think he will want to barter and I should be prepared to go down, start high. I really don't want less than $20 an hour even though I have no professional experience because the hours might be low. The one guy I talked to said writers were rare and that sounded good. Anyway since this guy is so into Donald Trump what does that imply to me for making the proposal? What do you think his strategy will be as a Donald disciple? Anyone want to tell me what to ask for?

Wow! $89! I say start at $30. I've been looking into doing some freelance proofreading and translating, and I've seen wages here range from $20-50. Make sure you bring up your writing, proofreading, and English language skills and how important accuracy in writing is for effective communication. Focus on how good writing reflects a business' dedication to quality and organization.

I don't know much about Donald Trump, but he has written a number of books. Could you check some out at your library and skim through them? Get some ideas?

Hi,

I got your mail. I've been racking my brains thinking about what to say and I really am not sure, as I am new to this. Try looking up societies/groups for copy-editors and writers in the USA, as they probably give guide price lists and may be able to help you more.

Here in England it is the norm to charge per hour for editing, but I am not sure that this is the case for writing, where it is more likely to be per piece.

Hope this ramble helps, sorry I can't be more use.

Catherine

I dropped off my completed proposal this afternoon and the guy was very impressed. He is reading it tonight and we meet tomorrow at noon. I went for $25 an hour and we will see what happens. I am just frantic about it. I left home today without combing or styling my hair at all! and I have been crazy stressed and have a stiff neck- all week! So please wish me luck for tomorrow and pray that I will get a decent offer. I hope to increase my volunteer work if I get this and so I hope that this is answering my prayers.

I hope your prayers are answered! I know how badly you want to get out of the meter reading and you seem to have a talent for writing which makes this more in your field of interest.

What type of volunteering would you like to do?

Let us know when you get the job, officially!

I had a very different meeting! I am hired and he gave me $30 instead of the $25 I asked for , but I am not really expecting much work for a while. I have to do sales and bring in clients in order to get writing work and he doesn't want to hire me as an actual employee. He was very impressed though by everything I did and said. I am so anxious to get out of meter reading! I have to make money soon! Well I go again on Monday and can ask more questions. I was there 4 hours but didn't get all my questions answered. Another person is going to do sales too but she is a really dumb teenager and she slowed down all the afternoon's progress. So I am exhausted and want to cry and have chocolate and a bath and let out the stress! I think it is good all around though; I just wish I could have had more questions concretely answered.

Thanks, but somehow he doesn't want me to be an actual employee but a sub-contractor. yet he mentioned the word partner and talked about being salaried someday. I just want a reliable job working few hours at home for okay money. I wish I could have that! But I could roll into that sometime. I might someday make good money and reduce my hours quite a bit. Anyway I have mixed feelings!

Well I started my first real day of sales. It isn't easy and definitely not immediate, but I have 2 interested businesses. One wants their logo redone for $750 and the other wants a new brand as they are using the Cadillac logo and can be sued! I go back to that one tomorrow and the other on MOnday. I will get $360 if they order just that stuff. I hope I can quit meter reading soon!

Do you contact the businesses or do you work with businesses that contact the company? Is $360 commission or is that based on the number of hours you're contracted to work with these businesses? How would you describe your "job title" at the moment? Sorry, to bombard you with questions, but I'm both excited for you and super curious! I hope you can quit meter reading soon too!

Ok, I go to whatever businesses I want. They do not contact us first. The walk in customers are not my customers. I research the businesses I want to go to online to see if they have websites etc. Then I go in when I think it will work for them. I tell them about our 50% special on websites and show them a portfolio of sample logos and cards and brochures too. I get paid 15% commission once a sale is done. I just started so I have not finalized a sale yet, maybe tomorrow. I also can log my mileage and get 20 cents per mile while I am doing sales. When I do writing it will be from home and I will give an estimate of what I want to make from the job, based on $30 an hour including writing and consulting the customer. I have to take my own taxes out for now. Later he may hire me as an actual employee.
