In the US you can take up to twelve weeks to have a baby...adopt...deal with an illness of yourself or a family member. Your employer is required to either give you the job you had before you left back OR one of equal significance.

Our system is so FAR behind Canada's. In Canada, the mother OR father can take up a year off at half pay and you have your job when you get back. We have a lot to learn from our friend's up north.

Kelly, yes I've seen the commercials too. I don't get how this effects me being late for work. Am I missing something? ha ha

That's right. We are a bit more generous up here. We, as Candians, even seem to get one or two more holidays a year. ha ha GREAT!

You know what, I was thinking the same thing? How is this relevant to her being late for work? But hey, I saw the commericals so thought maybe it'd be helpful...the commericals are actually getting a little annoying

I can't understand why anyone ever gets anywhere late (unless of course, they have an emergency, like a flat tire!)

Even when I had 2 babies 13 months apart, I was always EARLY getting someplace. Tardiness makes me insane. I've always thought tardy people were arrogant, thinking they are more important than anyone else ---kind of like too good to follow the same rules everyone else has to follow. (Sorry, but in my anal head, that's the way I see it---like they think the world revolves around them, and them only.)

There's a woman in our neighborhood that shows up late every single time we all go out to lunch---and then she comes in griping that we didn't save her a seat or wait on her to order. She even showed up an hour late for her own birthday party! I thought having us all wait an hour in a restaurant was very inconsiderate of her.

I thought maybe you had to be in at 6 a.m. or earlier. I cannot imagine not being able to get to work at 9 o'clock!
Most people I know leave in the morning before the sun comes up, including the tiniest school-age children.

How did you ever make it through school? Where you tardy every day?

Sorry I'm not being sympathetic. But I can't even begin to imagine being late every day to work---even if it is just a few minutes.

Maybe you could work from home---or start your own business. Otherwise, you have to abide by the same rules as everyone else. I don't know how you can expect your supervisor to make an exception for you.

Maybe you should read through the posts or know something of Tina's history first before you make comments about people thinking the world revolves around them or how did they make it through school. Tina has chronic insomnia which has been diagnosed by a doctor just as your bipolar has been and your diabetes. Chronic disorders affect people's lives in different ways, would you not agree on that? You speak of school, Tina's specialist is amazed how she was able to do so well in school since she never really reaches the stage of sleep at night where most of our bodies are resting and recharging for the next day. Think how you would feel EVERY morning if you didn't sleep at all the night before. That is essentially how Tina feels when she wakes up in the morning. It is a medical fact and the doctors can't even do anything for it.

It is one thing to be tardy because you are lazy or just don't care but it is another thing when it is a result of a physical impediment. So don't try and belittle her before you know the facts. I am sorry if I am being defensive but i refuse to allow my fiancee to be classified as lazy or not caring of other people.

As someone who frequently feels the negative effects of not enough Stage 4 sleep, I truly do not know how Tina manages to get to work at all!

And until you've spent a week (not even a lifetime like Tina) trying to get up and dressed in the morning after no stage 4 sleep, I don't think anyone can comment. It is the WORST symptom of my Fibro...and that's saying something!
