I am an HR person too.

Might I suggest filing for FMLA protect for your job? That way,despite being union, you're safe. We're union but we have a strict tardy policy that I enforce daily.

I think we do have this in Canada Tina...I've been seeing a lot of commericals for it lately (pretty sure they were Canadian) I think you can take up to two months to take care of a family member.
