I bought pop-tarts and started to buy him a toaster when it dawned on me that it would cost more to send it that the value of the stuff in it. So I sent a "modern day care pakcage" in the gift card form. Which would you prefer? My mom used to send the best gift packages. For halloween she'd pack up straws with skeletons on them, and popcorn balls, along with a few plastic spiders. Its cheesy, but I loved it!! Or before a test she'd send popcorn bags, candy bars, study grub! Just like 10 or 20 bucks at a time. Enough to fill the little fridge we had in our dorm room with snacks and goodies. My sister and I LOOOOOVED this. When you're 18, 19, 20 yrs old the LAST thing you want to spend your own money on is food.
