My border, Nazarene from Iran, is eating about 5 bulbs of garlic for lunch! Eeeek! The vampire is scared. There's also a huge spanish onion in her lamb dish! Just the smell is volatile. I can't breathe in here!!!
Hehe...I wonder what ever happened to "Volatile/Notadoctor?"

Sounds like a good smell to me. I'm of Portuguese and Italian heritage. Throw in a little vinegar and meat and we'll have lunch.

Nazarene is the only one at the moment. Like me, she's in her thirties. She's an optometrist from Iran, but studying at the University of Waterloo for recertification for practice in Canada. She's wild, but bossy. She's already telling me to get meat on my bones. It's great extra cash for travel!!! She is quite the character. It's fascinating having someone from a culture so radically different in the house. She's really seemingly bossy, though--at least to me. She's already trying to tell me how to eat, sleep, dress, exercise. Honestly, she wants to take my lazy depressive butt out for afternoon walks--only 15 minutes, she insists. She means well...her style of dealing with others is just more abrasive than I'm accustomed to. I like her individuality. Also, it forces me to be assertive. (I'm a wimp)

I love the 'cultural invasion' in my home! (What she ate would give me a huge attack) but the smell, the ritual, the novelty is fascinating.

Yes, it's fun! What's even funnier, is that she's "contagious!" Okay, I'd better clarify that generic comment. Re: the pungent odour--I figured, if you can't beat 'em, may as well join 'em. So...I ate 3/4 c. red onion! And then I got so warped...I figure...what the hell, why not have a beastly salad! (She was eating raw cabbage--go figure!) The sulfur around here is getting to my brain. At least it's good for hair growth and skin.
She's fun. She gets me chatting. I often go days without talking out loud. She's also bugging me to get my eyes looked after. My eyesight is so awful that it's interfering with my life. Things that I was formerly passionate about, i.e. reading/books/lit. are painful, a chore. I miss that joy, that pleasure.
She's funny, too. She watches at least 5 hours of t.v. She's glued to the tube, with a dictionary. This is how she's learning her conversational English. She's actually quite good, considering. She's a soap opera/talk show addict--"Passions" and "The Young and the Restless," "Oprah" and "Dr. Phil..."

At least 4 months.
I love red onion, too! (And shallots, vidalias) I could eat them like apples. I cooked one up for lunch and she went positively crazy over the delicious smell. She's never had one.

Aie! It's pretty pungent around here! She has me eating the stuff. I ate 4 or 5 cloves today, and a red onion and about 1 c. scallions.

I'd be a fartbag! But dang, the stench is worth eating garlic! I love eating roasted garlic, when it's all mushy...I could seriously eat an entire clove(if that's an entire bulb...)

I take really potent enzymes and Nexium--no problem whatsoever. Raw onion is better on my tummy than cooked. Cooked onion gives me rude heartburn/gas. Also, lots of salad/celery helps cleanse it. I'm in "Eating for IBS" rebel mode, currently. I think I do like the nausea all this pungent stuff excites. I think the allum is thinning my blood, too. I ate a bunch of dill and a bunch of parsley and drank tons of "Tummy mint" tea. Uh, it does get me moving/running, though.
Kate, IBS-D.

I love garlic, but that's A LOT OF GARLIC! WHEW! Does the smell just ooze out of her pores? I'm not kidding--I was a big garlic eater "back in the day" and I swear my sweat smelled like garlic. (I had a friend who gently confirmed this. )
Don't even ask about "Volatile!" lol! Do not go there.
