Ok, I'm getting worried. I work for a trucking company. Trucks are being turned away from truck stops...no fuel. Local prices have jumped .25/gallon and all of our local stations are running low on fuel and don't know when they will receive more. What in the world is going on elsewhere? I'd love to know! This is really troubling news!!!

I just heard on the news here in Canada that they do expect some sort of a ripple effect...for example, I heard that we may see a lot of fruits/vegetables that are normally imported from the US not being on shelves or having signifigantly higher prices because it's going to be harder/more expensive for the trucks to get here. Don't know if that's the kind of info you're looking for, but that's all I've heard.

Hope that helps,
Kelly

And I stopped at three gas stations this morning that were all "out of order." I didn't stop and inquire but I assume they were out of gas. When I finally found a station open, I paid $3.06 a gallon. I've heard it supposed to be $4.00 by the weekend here!

I haven't really watched much of the news and don't understand whats really happening?? Is it from the Hurrican or what??

The cost of gas here has jumped 40 cents since last night. I paid $2.89 per gallon today. I have heard that in the northern part of ND it is $3.18 per gallon.
I also work in the trucking industry, and when this happens, we have truckers who can't pay their payments because of gas prices. Bring on the bankruptcies!
It is scary to hear that some stations are running out of gas...

A friend of ours is the CEO of a large company that has many delivery trucks, and he was informed today of a "severe temporary shortage" of gas. Lots of people are filling up here, and I saw the same in Atlanta on CNN. I filled up yesterday, so I haven't been to the pumps today, but they said it was $3.50 a gallon in Atlanta!

I'm glad I don't have an SUV anymore.

Thank goodness your husband has the option of working from home. I'm glad my son is off at college now---without a car. He was driving my car all summer, from one side of the city to the other! My other college-aged son is parking his car and riding his bike.

It sure puts a damper on a lot of people's plans for Labor Day weekend. The local tv station was encouraging people to stay home, because they said they may get stranded and not be able to get home.

Every gas station in our town ran out of 87 octane yesterday. Lines snaked everywhere with folks fueling up, and, like the rest of you guys reported...$4.00/gallon looks very likely. I have no idea how our company will survive this...and if it does...how I'll pay bills. This is really scary!

BUT, when I see what those folks in Louisiana are going through, I have to bow my head in shame. They have lost everything. Our nation will never be the same. And hurricane season's most active time is just now beginning. I'll be keeping my eye on the Eastern Sky!

Well driving to work this morning, I saw several stations closed and the general gas price was around $3.20 but I've heard it could go up to almost $5.00 before the weekend!

I finally got a chance to watch some news this morning and the devastation is just horrible. Will was stationed in Buloxi at the Air Force many years ago and kept pointing out all the placed he used to go to. I couldn't imagine going through something like that. No food, no water. It makes me feel bad for being upset with things in my life.

wow, this could get ugly. I sincerly hope that the college does not raise tuition to cover their expenses. Remember as you start to feel guilty about worry for yourselves "up here", your first responsiblity is to you and yours. After they are taken care of, only then should you worry about "down there".

The devastation and violence this hurricane has left behind is heartbreaking. My heart aches for those affected. I watch the news with a heavy heart and shed tears for those who lost their homes and family and everything they valued.

The gas situation in Pittsburgh is bad, too. I was lucky enough to fill up my tank yesterday for $2.69. Right now it's at $2.99. Like many others, I feel guilty for getting upset over gas money when so many people have lost everything, but it's hard to swallow.

I've noticed a spike in my IBS symptoms and anxiety, too, in worry over what the future is going to bring. It seems we've been hit with so much tradegy and loss lately. I pray that we all have the strength to endure.

Hang in there, everyone. We can gather strength from each other.

Kristine

...or isn't there a good day anymore? I heard that Weekends are the worst time...but maybe it will only keep going up no matter what day I get it.

I received a 30 cent raise this year and that won't even cover the increased price of gas! I'm really worried about how I will be able to live when prices are so widly out of control!

I don't know that there is a good day, especially now.

Gas in my neck of the woods is $3.19-3.29 a gallon for regular. My husband & I were going to go to Michigan to visit family next week, already having decided to skip visiting friends on the other side of the state. He kinda insisted we at least visit my folks, but if there are gas shortages, I am beginning to think it's wisest not to even leave town.

If I could walk to work, I would.

There is no good day to buy gas anymore. The station by my house raised their prices by 30 cents overnight. It is pure and outright gauging of prices. There is NO gas shortage. It is people panicking and buying gas all at once that is causing stations to run out of gas.

Yes, but it would take a great amount of resources to prove it. I work in the financial serverices industry and I find it to be reprehensible what tradres are doing. There was a supposed premium built into oil prices for such a disaster. Now that it has happened they just use it as an excuse to speculate even more. Who profits? The traders and oil companies. Disgusting. For me, I am not buying gas unless I REALLY have to. I refuse to pay these prices. Until people scale back on car usage and taking long and unecessary trips, prices will not go down.

I agree, Tommy. It's a disgrace. They have us at their mercy. I also will only buy gas when absolutely necessary. My husband and I only drive to and from work and then do nearby errands only when we have no choice. It makes you think twice about running to the store or to the bank on a whim. I'll be staying home a lot more now.

Are you converting what the price is from $/litres to $/gallon? I never knew how to do the conversion but if that's what we're paying in Canada, I think I'm going to go throw up! I can't understand why our prices would be higher than those in the United States when the hurricane didn't even do any damage here. What is your price per litre there?

It's too early to make any definite decisions about the house...let your kids help you figure it all out...what's best for you. Do they live close to you? Maybe you should move closer to one of them if they live far away. I'm sure they would love to have you near them and it would be good for you too, if you all get along. I just hate thinking of you all alone in that house thinking and being so sad all day long.

You take the price per litre and multiply it by 4.2 - there is 4.2 litres per gallon. That's what DH said anyway - and yes that is what we are paying in Canada! We are paying 1.22 per litre here which equals that!!! Blech

And yes, I agree I have no idea why we pay so much more for this than the US - guess we have those extra freight expenses to get it all the way up here LOL

Gerry;
I haven't been on this board very long, but I wanted to let
you know you are in our prayers. I can't imagine how hard
it must be for you at this time. I will give you a little
advice that I heard on the Suze Orman show on CNBC. A lady
called in and asked what she should do with her house and
some financial decisions as far as the life insurance she
had gotten from her husbands policy. The first thing Suze
said was if at all possible to not make any major
financial decisions for a year. Because the decisions you
make in the first year will be made with emotions. She said
if you do have to make any major decisions to have your
children help you with these decisions if at all possible.
She also said if you decide to stay in your home and you
have a mortgage.. and this is if you have gotten any money
from a life insurance policy which will let you do this. Is
to pay off your house. They took a poll on women that were
widowed.. and it was several yrs later.. they said the best
decision they ever made was to pay their house off. It took
a huge load off their shoulders not having that mortgage
payment. And then if they decided to move they could sell
their home and be able to take that money and buy something
smaller or move near their children.

Okay, I hope this helps a little. I can't imagine how hard
this is for you. I can't imagine how hard it would be for me
if my husband Paul was gone. I will pray for you and your
family. I know I am new here, but if you need anyone to
talk too I am here.

Where are you located? I am in Springfield, Illinois. But
have lived all over. Starting with my home state of
Wisconsin, California, Minnesota, Florida, Kentucky,
Georgia, North Carolina, Arkansas, and now Illinois.

Sorry for your loss.

God Bless!

Stacy Troutman
