I just recently got a home phone number after not having one for a year (just used my cell).
NO ONE has this number except for my parents, a few friends and the condo assoc manager.
HOWEVER I've been getting calls all hours of the day at least five times a day from stupid telemarketers!!!!
save policemen's families foudations, boston globe, new cable companies, save animals, etc. you name it- they've called me (and i've only had this phone a WEEK now!)
anyone have any advice on how to take care of this? is there a website or somewhere you can send something to get them to all stop calling?

I think it's www.donotcall.gov
Or look up, Do not call list. It is a list put together that takes your name off of MOST telemarketing lists. And try not to put your number on things like applications, etc. People will sell numbers like crazy!
Good luck!

Yes, that would be great if there was. I hardly ever get phonecalls from telemarketers now.

It will take about 3 months for the calls to stop. Also, if they keep calling you after three months you can tell the telemarketers to put you on the do-not-call list. And if they keep calling, get their name & company and inform the Federal Trade Commission

If you ask them to take you off their phone list they're legally supposed to. I usually cut them off, and say I'm not interested and to please take me off their list.

Yep! It works! I called that number too. I RARELY get telemarketing calls anymore. It does take a few months to really kick in but hey, it's worth it!

Ugh, I hate it when I telemarketers keep going after you say not interested. I have to solicite for my job and hate doing it, so when someone says Not Interested I politely wish them a good day and say good bye. There is no reason to keep these people on the phone, they aren't going to be convinced otherwise, you will just piss them off.
Sorry these people are so rude to you.

One time a telemarketer for a phone company (not the one we use) told my boyfriend, "You're not interested in free long-distance minutes? Are you stupid?" Yeah, we really want your service after that great sales pitch!
The Do Not Call list has really helped. However, I believe it still allows calls from non-profit groups, telephone surveys, and those companies that are already serving you.
I wish there was a list for door-to-door soliciters. I really don't like strange men coming to my apartment trying to sell me magazines, house cleaners, or redemption. "No soliciting" signs put up by the apartment managers don't help. I just don't open the door now if I don't recognize the person through the peephole.

Interrupt. Say you're not interested and hang up. Don't let them get another word in after you say you're not interested. Beware of give to the police - it's often a scam. I know in Ontario the police do not make phone calls for fundraising - so it's one you need to be careful with.

Hey, thanks for the link. Reading this thread prompted me to finally put our number on the list.
What gets me, is my husband gets telemarketing calls on our home number. He hasn't given that number to any businesses or what not; he uses his cell number for everything. So they must be getting his number through my accounts or the phone company since he's registered as someone who can make changes to the account in addition to me. /end minirant/
