Shane called me this morning to tell me he called the dentist due to a sore he had in his mouth. I noticed the last couple of days he was using the water pick more...but figured he had something stuck in there or something. Anyway, the dentist wanted to see him right away when he called them and explained what was going on...no pain involved as of yet.

Shane used to be a really bad boy until about 2 years ago when he stopped chewing... he started very very young...like 12-13 years old and he did not stop until he was 36 He has had some surgery before (about 10 years ago) but it did not stop him at the time....

So, when he looked in the mirror this morning at his gum area....he about crapped and got really freaked out...enough to call the dentist AND to finally tell me about it...he was hoping it would go away on it's own. The dentist has sent him to a specialist this afternoon to see what steps will happen next... the dentist is about 90% sure he will lose at least 1 of 2 teeth but he thinks the jaw bone is ok. He is not 100% there will not be cancer either

So, prayers are needed..... I will keep you all posted.

Oh Shell, I am so sorry to hear this!
I am so glad that he decided it was time to do something about it and get his butt to the dentist! I'm sure the specialist will be able to sort it out for him, and he'll be just fine.
I'm sure the dental procedures won't be much fun but as long as it gets all fixed up and he gets a clear bill of health in a little while it'll be like nothing happened.

I am sending lots of good, healthy thoughts your way!

**huge hugs**

Oh Shell, I'm so sorry that you're going through this. I'll definately send prayers you're way. Try not to worry too much until you know for sure what you're dealing with (easier said than done I know) and hopefully it won't be anything serious and everything will work out fine

Sending lots of hugs your way,

Thank you everyone for your kind words and prayers, it really means a lot to both Shell & I.

I guess I have what is called "Internal Resorption" which is the breakdown and assimilation of the bone that supports the tooth, i.e.,bone loss the tooth is dying from the inside out. When the specialist did testing to see what I could and could not feel, one of the teeth I felt nothing and the others around it hurt like HE-double hockey sticks!!

They are thinking the abscess in my gums is caused by this but they are not 100% sure yet. I will call this morning and make an appointment with an oral surgeon and see where it goes from there. He will also decide if they need to cut anything out to check for cancer.

Thanks again everyone, we will keep you up to date as things happen.

Shane

Thinking of you, and hoping everything turns out ok. Let us know what the oral surgeon says.

I wish I could get you to talk to my 18-year-old son. We found some chewing tobacco in his room recently, and we had a long talk with him about the dangers of using it. Of course, he thinks his parents are stupid and don't know anything. He just rolled his eyes, and said, "You guys worry about everything!"

GOOD NEWS... it's NOT CANCER!!

Shane was given pain killers and will be scheduling a surgery hopefully on a Friday in Sept so that he will only miss 1-2 day from work. He will have the following done.

Large piece of his jaw and gum in the front along with at least one tooth, maybe two will be removed. They will take a section of jaw from the back of his mouth near his wisdom teeth and put it in the front. The medical recommendation is that he will also need an implant but the insurance may not cover that due to high cost so he may end up with just a bridge.

They will not need to do any cutting on the outside of the mouth so that is a good thing.

I will take that Friday and Monday (if needed) off with him and get him to and from the appointment...he will be totally knocked out for this baby!! He will probably be eating applesauce, pudding, and baby food for a few days.... poor guy!!

BUT NO CANCER!!

Thank you so much everyone for your prayers.... they have been answered once again!!

YAAY! Great news!

My hubby has had extensive oral surgery, too. He had some tissue from the roof of his mouth transplanted around a tooth, a bone transplant & a tooth implant. He was a real trooper through it all and hardly complained at all. Just needed pain killers a couple of days and then Advil.

Hopefully Shane won't have much trouble either. Anyway, Good Luck.

Gosh, that is not what I meant by the post AT ALL! I wasn't even thinking about your posts when I said that... All I meant was, we hear so often that someone we know HAS cancer that it is so nice to hear that someone has been told they DON'T. Sometimes I get down and start to think that "everyone" has cancer, so that was just nice to hear.

Shelby, I am so sorry if you thought that I meant anything negative towards you. I truly didn't, and I hope your feelings weren't hurt.

I'm so glad this was resolved with no cancer! I had this too, where the root of the tooth was being eaten from the inside, but they were effectively able to treat it with antibiotics and I didn't have to lose the tooth.

I'm glad they caught it in time where the infection didn't spread to the jaw. Jaw surgery can be so tricky and the recovery is not pleasant!

It's amazing how many recent cancer scares there are lately! I'm so glad Shelby Jean is ok, my mom is recovering, etc. I so hope that \Stephie's family will be ok too-- These things happen in threes!!

Big hugs to you, Shell (AND Shane!)

Shane's surgery will be Friday, 9/9/05 so I will take that date and possibly Monday, 9/12/05 off to be with him.

Good news...out of pocket costs including the temp bridge......$ 189.00 evidently his insurance is good.

Of course, the implant/bridge is later.......that will probably be a grand.......but thats much later

The surgeon canceled Shane's surgery for today and moved it to 9/21....they will not be doing as much as originally planned....the "Seasoned" surgeon took a look at his chart and called him back in to look at his mouth again.... they may not have to cut the gums afterall!! I'll keep you all posted.

It all went well... Shane said he felt no pain even the shots to numb it...probably cuz of nerve damage already done. The surgeon thinks he is not going to be able to save that darn tooth after all...but will wait a little and see how he does. He was able to eat soup last night for dinner, yogurt for breakfast, and lunch he will try a sandwich, if that does not work he will go to the deli and get some soup... he is at work today but only if he can make it without NEEDING to take more Hydrocodone (the good stuff..hehehe). He crashed SO hard in bed last night.... he was making funny noises and snoring within 15 mins....lol Usually I can hardly hear him. He has a follow up appointment the 2nd or 3rd week of Oct..... I'll keep ya posted...

oh no Shelby....I hope your foot is better now!!

Shane is like new....no more pain... (I hide the "happy pills" for a later date! hehehe j/k!) He will have a follow up and make an appointment at that time for the next step...not sure what that is as of yet.

Shell, I'm just coming into this thread. I'm SO glad to hear that it wasn't cancerous and that Shane's surgery went so well. I'm sending good wishes his way that his recovery will go well and that he won't be in much pain!
