The "How long" thread made me wonder.

I am a museum educator. I develop the programs we take out to schools and civic groups as well as onsite things for special events and such.

I generally love what I do, but sometimes, I think the low salary may eventually drive me away.

I'm a college student, but I also work parttime in the freshmen engineering labs, helping develop new curricula, adminstering summer programs, doing prospective student tours, stuff like that.

Btw, my majors are biomedical and electrical engineering. The "plan" is to go to grad school, get a PhD in biomedical engineering and become a college professor.

My sister's getting a PhD in biomedical engineering right now. She doesn't want to be a college prof though.

However, I do. I'm an Assistant Instructor and a Teaching Assistant (AI's have their own classes, TA's help out profs) as well as taking a full load of grad classes. This upcoming year will be my last year of courses EVER and assuming I pass my comps all that will be left (all, I say) is to write my book. I just have to make it through this year. That's all.

The museum job sounds so cool. Sometimes I think I'd like to do something like that, rather than teach college. To me the "low" salary seems like a enormous one- grad students get peanuts.

I work full-time as a property manager at a commercial real estate company.

I also freelance write (I write a column for a local newspaper among other things). It's great because it's something I can do on my own time after my full-time job.

I model on the side for extra cash whenever a job pops up.

My sister was a TA when we were in grad school. Peanuts indeed. Everyone I knew who was a TA was way stressed out and overworked and severely BROKE on top of it all. Severely broke and I do not get along well. In that situation, I tend to collapse into a fetal ball of worry, my brain shuts down, and I am pretty useless. Grad school was stressful enough as it was! Anyway, I chose to just borrow from every student's friend Sallie Mae. It was the right decision for me.

When I say "low salary" it means well under $30K with a master's and 5 years of experience (okay, I have no shame admitting my salary )...though, granted, it's a pitfall of working for a house museum.

Anyway, I'm sure you are glad the end is in sight! I don't know that I would have had the mental stamina to continue beyond my master's.

I'm a university student for the second time around. After graduating with a BA in Economics in 2000, I worked for Allstate Insurance Company as an Actuarial Assistant for about 4 years. I decided last year to come back to school and, if everything works out, I'll be doing an MSc in Nationalism Studies at the University of Edinburgh in September.

What is a property manager?

And don't you go to school too? How do you find time for all this? Geez, I'd be a stress monster. Well, I already am, and I only work one FT job, and it's a pretty easy one at that!

I'm a solicitor (lawyer). I qualified three years ago and since then I have worked in-house for the largest Bank in the country

My job is advising the retail area of the Bank on any legal issues that arise on a daily basis and I also draft the terms and conditions for new bank products (like credit cards, deposit accounts, debit cards etc) Are you asleep yet...yawn!

I do like my job most of the time, the salary could be better but the leave and work conditions are good.

Well I'm a student too; going into my 3rd year of an undergrad degree in literary and cultural theory in Sept. The 'plan' is to do my MA and PhD after that and probably go on to become a professor or other type of academic of some kind.

But since high school I've also worked full time as a graphic designer at a newspaper. I stopped during the year when I started university but since it's summer I'm back at it. I work in the creative department so that means I design ads and sections of the newspaper, put it all together, and now I'm also working to print out negatives and get everything ready for the paper to go to press (which also means I'm working nights , but that's ok). I've also done quite a bit of freelance graphic design and web design on the side.

My jobs have been so confusing lately I am a civil engineer- I worked for a company in Chicago for 2 years designing - using AutoCad and Microstation to design roads/highways/bridges/intersections. My main focus is intersections/signal timing/accident reports/etc. I love car accidents - I know that sounds weird but I love analyzing them, doing the stats for them, etc.

When we moved here I worked for the County, so I was outside as an engineer telling 45 year old construction workers how to do their work. That was very intimidating, and very stressful to be in charge of a large project. There is so much more that goes into every construction project than meets the eye. The paperwork is insane.

Right now, I'm pregnant, working at Victoria's Secret, and teaching skincare and cosmetic lessons! A lot less stressful and easier on my tummy.

I'm sure I'll go back to engineering when I'm older, and my kids are a little older...but until then I'm going to be a stay at home mommy! Makes me SO happy that I can be.

A property manager is someone who manages all the properties that the company owns.

We are landlords for some properties so I deal with tenants, rent, etc.

It would take pages to go into detail about what I do but that's it explained in its simplist form.

Yah I go to night school as well. I end up not having a whole lot of free time but it will all pay off in the end.

I'm technically doing "research" for the Department of Defense. As I mentioned in the "How Long" thread, it's my fourth time back, but it's my third supervisor (same as last year). It doesn't look like I'm doing a whole lot of anything substantial, but what can you do?

Do you mind if I ask how you are managing to afford school? I believe I read that you go to Western...I just find it so expensive and I'm can't seem to juggle it. I'd love to continue on and get my Masters and PhD, but I must just suck in the budgeting department or something because I can't seem to make it work

I'm a gardener, sort of. My job is looking after plants in offices, but I'm going to start a correspondence course soon to get a qualification....the aim is to end up as a garden designer. I LOVE designing.

HOWEVER, I'm trained as a Meteorologist and worked as one for 2 years after graduating. But I only trained in that so I could become a professional yacht racing navigator...and IBS kinda put paid to that idea! And office meteorologists work long shifts in cities, which was hell with the FIbro.

LOTS of career changes in the past few years! This one I want to stick with. I always did Science at school, college, etc b/c that was what I was best at, but secretely, I've always wished I'd followed the arty route.

I work for a Skilled Nursing Facility in accounts receivable. I do bill the resident's insurance companies for their stay there. I've been in this field for 17 years. I originally started right out of high school in a doctor's office. Then worked in a hospital doing inpatient, outpatient, hemodialysis and other billing. Then when our hospital was bought out, I went to our Skilled nursing facility and have been there ever since. Before children I actually worked two jobs. The other job I worked at night in a dental office doing their billing. My hubby worked second shift at the time and I had nothing else to do so I worked. I think back at that and wonder "was I nuts ".

I am a commercial interior designer. Meaning, I sit behind a computer, use AutoCAD, and see how many cubicles I can fit into a space. It's actually a bit more complex than that, and I enjoy working for the furniture dealer that I am at, but my current "dream" is to finish my romance novel and get it to a publisher. We'll see if that ever happens.

I have one job, but many titles since it's just my boss and me. It gets sort of confusing, but my boss has several companies:

So I'm a Legal Assistant for the real-estate mediation company that he has. He basically helps lawyers in a case negotiate a solution before it goes to trial. It's nice because I get to learn all this neat legal stuff since my boss has practiced law for over 20 years.

Then I'm an Office Manager for a development company that he co-owns with the owner of a construction company. However, my boss' partner is really only a financial contributor so we do all the work. We've currently got two 8-9 single-family housing projects going on.

Then I'm another office manager in my boss' own development company (that he does solo). We've got one property that we rent and then my boss is also building his own house, which is thankfully almost done. Also looped in this company is the renovation of our office building that we're in the process of purchasing. It's really neat because it's a Julia Morgan house (famous female architect that built Hearst Castle in California) that's almost 100 years old. And it's almost in the same condition as it was when it was built, because hardly anything has been changed. We've even got the dumbwaiter and coal shoot still. Luckily his wife just retired because she and I are in charge of the renovations. When we're all done, we'll rent out the extra office space we have.

And as if we didn't have enough projects going on - my boss is trying to get his wife and me to start a marketing company since she's very driven with lots of ideas and I'm good at webpages. I keep telling him that I'm going to need a full-time assistant if we do that. Luckily his 12yr old daughter is my part-time assistant this summer, because I'd still be backed-up if not for her.

And finally, I go to school full-time during the school year and am taking a really hard summer school class this summer.

My position is titled "library specialist," but really I'm just a lowly part-time library clerk. Actually, there's quite a lot of respect from our patrons and among the library staff and administration, so it's a great place to work. I'm in the circulation department, which means I mostly work with the public, check materials in and out, translate materials, and do interpreting for Spanish-speaking patrons as needed.

I would love to return to grad school next year, but there's a lot of things to think about at the moment.
