I've just realised that my soy sauce has sugar AND lactose in it...no wonder I've been feeling increasingly crappy since lunch (noodles wih soy sauce).

I guess I got over lax about not checking labels anymore. Sigh.... This crap's in everything. I even have to get French Corn Flakes from my HFS as all the English varieties have added sugar! Extra bad foods on top of the IBS is sooooo boring.

What brand is that? I use Clearspring Shoyu, available Sainsbury's, some HFS and organic supermarkets.

Ingredients: water, whole soya beans(18%),wholewheat (16%), sea salt, Mikawara Mirin (sweet rice, water, cultured rice). Soya beans and mirin are organically grown.

I like this brand for Japanese ingredients generally - they seem committed to using authentic methods as much as possible.

Hope this helps.

and a mint that was safe before isn't now... the ones served at my local thai restaurant... and I almost ate it before Bill noticed they replaced the shortening with clarified butter.... they have wrappers and labels.. thankfully! I do love that they will go light on oil for me...

I know it sucks. It seems they put lactose into about everything.. but soy sauce! This is the straw that breaks the camel's back!!!!! No fair at all! Hugs, Alicia.

I use BRAGG'S seasoning. Ingredients: soybeans, water. I love it.

Yeah, price difference usually means something bad unfortunately!

Still can't understand why they put lactose in soya sauce. Seems all wrong!

Do you ever use tamari? I like it even better than shoyu, but I have a Japanese friend who was a bit shocked to see me put it on the table - she said it was too strong and was only for cooking - maybe like we would feel about tomato puree compared with tomato ketchup? Any experts in Japanese cooking out there who know more about this?
